Via Anthony Witrado:
The Brewers also claimed catcher George Kottaras off waivers from the Boston Red Sox. Kottaras, 26, batted .237 with one homer and 10 RBI in 45 games with the Red Sox last season.

Sounds to me like he was brought in as competition for Jth Ly
The spot will be handed to Jth Ly, but now they can say that he beat somebody out for it.

LuCroy
Jth Ly is what his signature looks like on RahRahBullCrap’s baseball.

I should buy a lottery ticket
Apparently my psychic powers, aka really lucky guesses, are in full swing today. Or, for a more far-fetched explanation, it’s not just McClung reading my comments, it’s DM too. >_>
i thought the same thing
as soon as i saw he was released.

I wish we had him before
Then we could say, Welcome Back, Kottaras!
In admittedly small samples, it looks like Kottaras hit righties OK, and Lucroy does better against lefties. I’d be OK with a platoon at catcher being paid literally in peanuts. Besides, Kottaras might not be totally horrible; in fact, those two by themselves would be an upgrade offensively at catcher.
"I will agree that the attitude [at BCB] is ridiculous and they have done so much to instigate animosity and then block us from responding. Real mature!"
Though we'd take a big hit in KUG.

KUG could be approaching zero next year
Kendall gone, Craiggers likely gone, Frank the Cat gone, David Weathers gone. Where will the team get its quotient of old, white, marginal MLB players? The only potential fit on the 40 man is Hart, and he’s still 5-6 years away.

Wow
I was looking for something similar to this when I was trying to measure Aaron Rowand’s worth. Its a shame I didn’t happen upon it earlier.

That was a lot of work, looking back on it
I messed around with that spreadsheet for hours. And then I developed a GRIT rate that didn’t add up everything cumulatively.
E: George 4 (5, throw, throw, throw, throw).
And still on the leaderboard

E: George 4 (5, throw, throw, throw, throw).
I'm surprised that it doesn't take more than 4 recs to get on the first page.
We need to be more rec-happy!

They'll need to replace Counsell
And virtually any of the backup utility infielder types will be gritty. Eric Bruntlett is doubly so, because of his beard.
That's all I've got for you today, unless you're interested in some Chris Capuano/Tom Haudricourt Fan Fiction.
The most expensive player on the team, maybe
Though he’s not really the gritty type. McGehee might pick up some grit.
I still think Lucroy will get a chance to compete for the job
But will ultimately lose out because a) they won’t want to add him to the 40-man roster unless they have to, or b) they won’t want to waste service and/or development time having him as a backup when he could be playing every day in AAA.
Then again, maybe they’ll keep him around all year to start in 30-40 games and have an opportunity to “learn to be a big leaguer” or whatever Gamel was supposed to be doing.
I agree to a point
I think he’ll only stay in the majors if he earns the right to start. If he’s going to ride the bench, he’ll be sent to Nashville for more seasoning.
That's all I've got for you today, unless you're interested in some Chris Capuano/Tom Haudricourt Fan Fiction.
I hate to do this to you.
But that’s the same thing Anthony Witrado suggested in the link above.
That's all I've got for you today, unless you're interested in some Chris Capuano/Tom Haudricourt Fan Fiction.
Nevertheless
I’m standing by it. A platoon, with Georgie-boy getting the bulk of the ABs, just might get you .700+ OPS, and for the minimum at that.
"I will agree that the attitude [at BCB] is ridiculous and they have done so much to instigate animosity and then block us from responding. Real mature!"
Oh, you were talking about the platoon.
I was really hoping that Witrado had made the same “Welcome Back Kottaras” joke. Damn.
Witrado only makes jokes that those who bleed Dodger Blue can understand.

I believe his last name rhymes with "guitarist"
Hence the nickname George “Rhythm” Kottaras
Brewers Baseball and other assorted nonsense (mostly the assorted nonsense) at my blog, What's a Tararrel?
if Kottaras platoons
it should probably be with someone like Rivera and not Lucroy.

Small sample size warning
Rivera’s career splits
OPS vs RHP-701
OPS vs LHP-645

Ug-less.
Melvin said that Kottaras was claimed merely to add depth to the Brewers’ catching situation and provide more options in the spring. Melvin said they’re still looking at the position and admitted he doesn’t have a front-line guy at present.
options?
Is Melvin thinking of signing any one of the several knuckleball pitchers who are minor league free agents? That’s the one thing Kottaras does really well.
Ohhh, that's a thought
You think this off-season The Mustache is enamored with knuckleballers? Sort of like he was/is enamored with a guy who throws a changeup as a closer.
Hello, R.A. Dickey!
Sigh.

Well, a lot of guys who wreck their arms and don't have any velocity
get approached by coaches and asked if they want to learn a knuckleball. Most clubs probably still have at least one guy who’s been rattled by injuries his entire career and is now working on a knuckler. Isn’t that what R.A. Dickey did?
Cards Announcers On Gamel's First Career HR, "That’s all they need is another home run hitter".
So...does that mean platoon?
Or does it mean he’s going to sign a Gregg Zaun or Yourfeet?

Yeah
I don’t think Kottaras was picked up because he’s the guy the Brewers want to catch 120 games next year. I think he was picked up because Doug Melvin spotted something shiny in with the stuff the Red Sox left out by the curb.
That's all I've got for you today, unless you're interested in some Chris Capuano/Tom Haudricourt Fan Fiction.
A team with that big of a payroll has things that aren't shiny?

Kottaras
Has a good upside…
I followed Boston for a good bit last season and I liked Kottaras’ potential… Good pick up..

That’s a little much, no? We’re all Brewers fans, through and through. Me thinking Gomez is putrid offensively, and not thinking he’ll suddenly figure it out isn’t ‘half empty’. Its logic.
