PLEASE NO
This blogger, MorneauVP, on MLBTRADE RUMORS.COM put it best
“Washburn posted a 2.64 ERA as a flyball pitcher in a giant park with one of the best outfield defenses in recent history behind him.
“Gutierrez, Ichiro, and Chavez were absolutely fantastic behind him.
“Delmon Young and Michael Cuddyer won’t come close to providing that kind of defense, and while Span is a plus defender, Gutierrez has him and just about every other CFer in baseball crushed.
“He pitches to contact, but doesn’t induce ground balls, he’s 35, hasn’t posted a solid season aside from 2009 in years, and put up an FIP of 3.87 and an xFIP of 4.71 with the Mariners alone last season when he was supposedly good. He had a ridiculously low .246 BABIP as well.
“Washburn should be avoided at all costs.”
Gomez may be comparable to Gutierrez, but Hart is no Ichiro. Eitherway Washburn is going to pitch to a 4.5 ERA and we can get Bush to do that for $5 mil, so Washburn is not worth more than that.
Hart
seems to be a pretty damn good defender. He may not be as good as Ichiro but he deserves his due.

seems, huh?

Hart seems like a pretty damn average defender to me

He's had a negative UZR/150 the last two years.
He’s not Braun-level bad in the field, but he’s not far off.
fielding stats are nothing if not bullshit
these are my facts about him: he’s extremely fast, he mostly takes the best route to the ball, and very rarely commits an error. He also makes quick, accurate throws to home. If there’s something wrong with him, to me it’s at the plate over the 1.5 year(s).

routes to balls
I remember a bunch of balls making it to the wall that shouldn’t have in 2008.

People tend to equate fast with good defense
It doesn’t work like that, as good outfielding is all about reaction time, acceleration, and route.
That’s why fielding stats are valuable. There is a zone where, if a ball falls, an outfielder should be able to catch it. There were balls that fell in that zone that Hart didn’t catch.

How about learning about them before ignorantly dismissing them as bullshit?
I’d like to hear your disagreement with the methodology…
E: George 4 (5, throw, throw, throw, throw).
Agreed
One of the bigger gripes with defensive metrics is it takes a relatively large sample in order to be able to try and draw conclusions. Looking at and comparing all of the good metrics out there, and also watching Hart with my own two eyes (Krasnick has that good article that cautions about going with simply one or the other—a combination is the most effective), I can confidently say Corey Hart is a below average defender in right field.
I don’t have a category for "washed-up guys who may or may not be dominant big-league closers sometime soon."

Probably as much as he elevated it in the 1st half
I still like that in late 2008 the Mariners could have let him and his Suppanesque contract & performance go to Minnesota on a waiver claim but they yanked him back because the Twins wouldn’t give up anything for him (or something to that effect). Sometimes it truly is the moves dumb GMs obstruct that work out…
