CBSSports fixes the Brewers
Courtesy of MLBTR, CBSsports.com offers to save the Brewers' "sad-sack franchise." It's an interesting read, if only because they use the phrases "tailgate meats," "mayonnaise dream," and "enormo-domed" --- and that's only the first two paragraphs. They hit the usual chords --- overspent for Hoffman, traded Hardy too soon, miserable pitching staff --- and added a new one, that the Coffey-Stetter-DiFelice trio will not be able to repeat last season's success.
And how do we fix our beloved franchise?
- Sign Carl Pavano and Doug Davis
- Trade Corey Hart (to Atlanta for Derek Lowe and cash) and Mat Gamel (to Oakland for a reliever?!?! or to Baltimore for O's pitching prospect Jake Arrieta)
- Fielder will make $20+ million/season and not age particularly well. Trade him to Boston for Buchholz, get a cheaper alternative Adam LaRoche, and use the savings to sign John Lackey. (Although if we're trading Prince, I guess I'd rather try Gamel at 1st base.)
- Keep McGehee and Kottaras --- not because they're likely to succeed in 2010, but because they're cheap.
It would be neat if we did all of these. Our rotation would be Gallardo, Pavano, Lowe, Davis, Buchholz, with Arrieta waiting in the wings. That's not half bad!
Despite not giving the Brewers much love early in the article, it actually ends pretty promisingly: that the Brewers are a mediocre pitching staff away from the playoffs. It's a thoughtful, funny read. (The first few comments are along the lines of, "you have no idea what you're talking about," which is a good sign for a post like this one.)

My favorite line:
The Cardinals lack depth behind their superduperstars, the Cubs appear to be paralyzed organizationally, the Astros are dumb, the Reds are poor and the Pirates aren’t trying.
I'm starting to think
he’s not a fan of the NL Central.
"I will agree that the attitude [at BCB] is ridiculous and they have done so much to instigate animosity and then block us from responding. Real mature!"
Larry Dobrow is really, really funny
Just one chuckle after another.
Rodrigo Lopez wasn’t even good in 2005. I would’ve gone with John Patterson.
Like the commenters
Al doesn’t seem to be amused either. I thought it was pretty humorous and, other than the Gamel-for-an-Oakland-reliever suggestion, reasonable.

I think he mentioned Lopez
because they were actually talking about pursuing him in a trade at that time. Same with Jon Lieber. (Lieber might have been free agent.) I actually think that he did some research.
Lots of commenters seemed to think he Dobrow didn’t know anything about the Brewers, but I’ve seen more “notable” “experts” say things that are just wrong. Dobrow gets it right about Lucroy vs. Salome, at least, which people like Bob Nightengale didn’t even bother to check on.
Also, I think the Gamel-to-Oakland thing was a joke about Billy Beane fleecing people, not necessarily a comment on the Brewers, per se.

Ohhhh
I think you’re right about Gamel to Oakland. Not that it was a good joke, mind you.

I agree except..
If they’re going to sign a washed up ex-Brewer pitcher, I’d go after Don Sutton over Doug Davis.
the Brewers are a mediocre pitching staff away from the playoffs
With Adam LaRoche instead of Prince Fielder? No, they’re not.
I’d make most of the other moves though. I’d sign either Davis or Pavano, not both, and I’d opt for the Arrieta-Gamel trade (obviously)

Right
My comment was the mediocre pitching staff one, not the author’s, and that was assuming last year’s offense.

The writer said "enormo-domed"
and Kevin Mench has been gone for a couple of seasons now!
You've got a couple screws missin' up in your toolbox, if you think that you'll stop this man from hittin' moonshots.

Its funny to me
how worked up some folks over on those boards get about this article, and other things in general. I guess I’m something of a cauldron-stirrer, though.

One thing is for sure:
you don’t want your “expert” “reporters” to have a “college” “education.”
