Cool.
But I hope this doesn’t mean that they are still thinking about picking up Looper’s option.

Paying Looper and Hoffman $14 mil combined would make it really hard for me to defend the Gomez move

I wonder
If the financial situation of the team is really starting to look bleak for next year, thus they are clearing out a ton of money early to see where they stand.
They could feasibly have a 25-30% drop in attendance next year.
Could have 3 possibilities for next year: 1) dump even more salary and make do with what is on the roster now, and have a worse year in the standings, save a few bucks; or 2)trade Fielder for a bunch of high level prospects and start a rebuilding process, save a lot of money; or 3) spend on mediocre players, still not make the playoffs, and make less money.

No way
Mark A. has shown no signs of salary dumping. If anything, he has shown the opposite inclination: to spend (or try to spend) when it’s not immediately clear where the money is.
Although I’m not sure about the Hardy trade, it might be a little bit early to give up on 2010, don’t you think?

honestly as long as suppan is still considered apart of the starting rotation
2010 looks about as safe as one of the rope bridges in the temple of doom.
buuut if he was apart of the 2 SP melvin is looking to replace, and gets moved to middle relief, then..

If Suppan continues his decline
it wouldn’t surprise me if he has a Bill Hall type exit. I think even Mark A. and Melvin are tired of him.

How about the strategy of
spend a lot of money on high-upside, high-risk players like Bedard and Sheets on one year deals, hope to get lucky, and if you don’t oh well good shot in 2011 anyway? I’m in favor of it.

so charting the payroll
+ 2 mil on hoffman
-10 mil on cameron
- 3.3 mil on Weathers
- 5 mil on JJ
+ 1 mil after arb on Gomez
so far, I got us at -15.3 mil so far on players that a decision is made on.

But some of that money is already gone.
Braun, Fielder and all the arbitration guys soak up a bunch of that.
That's all I've got for you today, unless you're interested in some Chris Capuano/Tom Haudricourt Fan Fiction.

Specifics
Braun goes up 250k, Fielder goes up 4M, Suppan goes up 2M if you include his buyout right away, Riske gets a 750k increase, and the arb eligible guys are Bush, Hart, Weeks, Gerut, McClung, Coffey, Villanueva, and Rivera.

I'm not sure where else to post this so I'll put it here
I was listening to the radio and heard that Jon Lucroy will be given the opportunity in spring training to win the starting catcher job.

Interesting.
That’s at least three positions with questionable hitting abilities if he wins the job at CF, C, and SS. 3B isn’t really a sure thing. It should be an interesting line-up we run out, that is for sure. And a pretty cheap one. It makes me wonder if Melvin has big plans with what he is spending on.

4 of our 8 starters
would be at or near minimum. Weird.

Does Son of Clung get another crack at starting?

Maybe for someone else, or someone in AAA
But McClung doesn’t sound too optimistic about being brought back, so I’m not counting on it.
With that said, if you’d like to see him back you’re welcome to join the facebook group.
