Melvin: "We are going to consider [Lucroy] as a candidate
In this interview, I really got the feeling that Lucroy and Rivera will be the catchers next season. That would leave all of the money to be spent on Counsell, 1 bench spot, and Free Agent Starting Pitchers.
He also notes that Gomez has a plus arm, rated a 60 on the 20-80 scale.

I say they should just go ahead and give him the job
His offense can’t be any worse than Kendall’s.

I think I speak for everyone when I say that I'm excited to see what Rivera can do with the starting job

Ahem, not everyone
I don’t have a lot of faith in Rivera to remarkably improve upon Kendall’s numbers. He’ll be cheaper, of course, but we’d lose so much in grit.

I don't know your definition of remarkably improving is
But I really like the guy. He seems to call a good game and he was REALLY good at the plate in 2008. I don’t know about how much better from an OBP standpoint he would be but he at least has some power so at least there’d be a threat from the 8-spot which we haven’t had in a while

You speak for yourself
I have no interest in seeing Rivera as our starter.
He’s really not that good of a catcher.

sample size.
I don’t think he’s shown over his career that he’s much more than ‘better than kendall.’ That’s not exactly saying a lot. He’s a solid backup, but I don’t think there’s really any potential left, there, either. The cieling is MUCH higher with Lucroy.

I'm not going to disagree with you because you're probably right
It’s just one of those things where my friends and I just have a soft spot for Rivera so I just went ahead and assumed everyone did. However, I could definately see him pulling a McGeehee

which was the abboration
2008 or 2009?

PS
I loved him in ’08 and was ready to cut Kendall on the spot.

I'm down with this
Heck, that one bench spot could be McGehee or Gamel if neither are traded, so it’s all about the starters from here on out.

please no bench spot for Gamel.
either start in MLB or AAA

Yorvit's option was declined

Saw that
For how much, though?
$4M?
I’d not be opposed to it.

I, too, think the Brewers should take a look at Torrealba
But where are you getting those numbers? He hit .291/.351/.380 last year (just about the best of his career).
Am I just confused?

Someone tell me if my reasoning is completely insane here
If the FO had plans to sign a FA catcher (or bring back Kendall), why would Doug say that Lucroy is a candidate for starting catcher next year? They wouldn’t go out and sign a FA and then give Lucroy the opportunity to win the job. It seems to me like Rivera and Lucroy are the options next year.

Exactly
I read into it the same way. He uses the word candidate, instead of saying that he’ll be given a chance in spring training. It’s possible that if somebody comes around, they could try to sign them. Otherwise, I think it’s pretty safe to say that Rivera and Lucroy will be splitting time.

Rivera, Lucroy, or cheap veteran backup
I can a couple things happening:
1) Lucroy wins the job, some experienced veteran (the new version of Henry Blanco?) signed as an insurance policy is the backup, Rivera is sent to AAA or released.
2) Lucroy doesn’t win the job, Rivera and the experienced veteran split time in the majors, Lucroy plays in AAA.
I don’t think Rivera has an inside track at all at a spot on the 25-man roster next year. I don’t think Macha thinks much of his defensive ability and conditioning. I wonder if they’ll even offer him arbitration.

Good point
If they do sign a cheap veteran (I expect they will), it doesn’t really make sense to pay $750k – or whatever Rivera will make through arbitration – just to have him in the system.
Bring in a free agent, have him split time with Lucroy, and you’ve still got backup catching depth in Salome.

But it does seem a little desperate.

Which part?
Having 2 rookies, a sophomore who over-achieved last year, a poor hitting CF, a back-sliding RF, and a 2B coming off of a bad wrist injury in the lineup? Or just saying LuCroy is going to be a candidate this early?
Win now, right?

Mmm hmm
Sorry but something about DM telling us this gives a lot of weight to it. Just like “Suppan will have to compete for a roster spot”. It’ll be Kendall or some gritty veteran again who plays 95% of the games.
