According to Tom H (I don't have access to the actual article ) Buster Olney ranks the Brewers atop his list of teams he expects to make a serious run at Lackey. With Suppan's contract coming off the books after next year, he considers a long-term agreement feasible.

I'm sure they'll try for Lackey

But the odds they they won’t be outbid by another team are slim to none.

They have to try for Lackey

Doug M can’t stand there disappointed saying he looked for free agent pitching but none was to be found if they don’t.

If neither the Yankees or Red Sox are involved in the bidding

Then the chances that the Brewers come up with the winning bid is reasonable – they have the payroll space for this year and next (with Suppan leaving) plus some other teams that normally might be players (eg Dodgers,Rangers) have owners with certain fianacial problems at the moment which might well rule them out.
So who else can/will go for a 5 year $80million deal?
Mariners? Angels? Astros? White Sox? Mets?

The Yankees are supposed to want Lackey

I don’t think the Brewers would sign him anyway, but would instead make the 2nd or 3rd highest offer to keep up appearances.

If the Yanks resign Pettitte, Damon, and Matsui, I'd be surprised if they add Lackey.

last year they spent a TON of money, but that’s because they had a TON of money coming off the books. They don’t have that money this year, so I’m thinking their only purpose in the Lackey sweepstakes will be to raise the price.

The Yankees probably will not re-sign Matsui

They need the DH to allow them to “rest” Posada,ARod etc.
I know that they need a 5th SP (Hughes or Jaba will probably be in rotation along with CC,Pettitte and Burnett) but I’m not sure if they might just hold out this year and sign somebody like Garland to a 1 year deal and wait until Halladay/Lee/Beckett/Webb are available next year.

I think you've hit the nail on the head.

They do have the money for

Pettitte, Damon, and Matsui coming off the books, and if they only resign one of them, they could have plenty of money to give Lackey.

I think Saltire’s idea for the Yankee’s plan is probably more accurate, though.

That's why I said that they won't have the money if they resign those three players..

And they’ve given indication that they plan on resigning at least 2 of those players.

The Brewers were 'in on' CC Sabathia last year.

Welcome to New York, Mr. Lackey.

I don’t have a category for "washed-up guys who may or may not be dominant big-league closers sometime soon."
