The Thursday Thinker: How old is Gregg Zaun?

Gregg Zaun will turn 39 in April, and was recently signed to be the Brewers' primary catcher. If he appears in 100 games next season, he'll be one of just four Brewers to make at least that many appearances in a season at age 39 or older.

In fact, only 16 Brewers have ever appeared in 100 games in a season at age 36 or older. How many can you name in five minutes?

Again, here are the rules: Post your score in the comments, but do not comment on any specific answer until after 6 pm Central time, so everyone gets a chance to try it out without having it spoiled for them. And, of course, there's no reason to cheat here, because there's no prizes.

Of the 16, there are several obvious ones, and one that I wouldn't expect anyone to think of. If you manage to get them all, though, post your time along with your score in the comments.

Have fun, and don't forget to post your score in the comments!

I recognized most of the names that I missed, but there was only 1 that I should have gotten.

I felt like there were 3 I should have gotten...

Great quiz, it was neat to see some different names pop up.

That’s almost half!

I got 10.

Thank you, bobbleheads on my desk.

That's what bobbleheads do.

They proliferate your desk, and then eat your soul. Behind those Cheshire grins are nothing but springs and unadulterated evil.

Just thought you should be aware.

That ought to buck everyone up. Stupid college basketball season.

Don't feel too bad.

I wrote the quiz (on Monday), and after having three days to forget about it, I only got 8.

And I wasn’t getting any of the others.

9 for me as well.

This might be the worst scores we’ve had yet.

I was pretty dumb and entered in Orosco like 100 times

Before I realized it was non-pitchers

I went with Tony Fossas.

All the alternative spellings I could muster.

I also tried Fossas

it's not non-pitchers

They’d just have to pitch a TON of games to be included.

This sounds like a job for TheJay.

A pitcher over age 36 who appeared in 100 games?

by Rubie Q on Dec 10, 2009 2:50 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Nevermind...

I think there’s only one pitcher who’s ever appeared in at least 100 games (any age).

by sjlee on Dec 10, 2009 2:58 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah

Mike Marshall in 106 games when he was 31. Marshall (36) and Kent Tekulve (40) have the record for most appearances by a 36+ year old with 90.

After seeing the answers

my 5 seems much more pathetic. I miss some really easy ones.

Nice quiz KL. I’ve been impressed by how you come up with lists that aren’t just the same names in a different order.

I do my best.

Having a routine helps. I usually start thinking about it on Monday or so, when a news item catches my attention and makes me think “Wow, I wonder how many times someone has done _.”

A few hours later, a Thinker is usually written and scheduled.
