Making Your '00 Face: Third Base

With the '00's almost behind us, it's time to take a look back and work together to make a BCB All Decade team for the '00s. Each day, we'll tackle a new position, and we'll have our 25 man roster complete sometime around the 1st of the year.

The concept here is pretty simple. Each day, I'll give you a list of candidates: For position players, it's the full list of players who appeared in at least 100 games at the position during the '00s. Here are the players we've selected so far:

First Base: Prince Fielder
Second Base: Rickie Weeks

Voting for shortstops opened yesterday and will close at 4 pm tomorrow. Meanwhile, we'll close out the infield. Here are the candidates at third base:

Tyler Houston

Seasons as a Brewer: 3, 2000-2002
Slash line as a Brewer: .279/.326/.475
UZR (Fielding) as a Brewer: -5.4 runs*
WAR as a Brewer: 1.8

*- FanGraphs only has UZR data dating back to 2002, so only Houston's 2002 season is included in this total.

Keith Ginter

Seasons as a Brewer: 3, 2002-2005
Slash line as a Brewer: .257/.344/.458
UZR (Fielding) as a Brewer: -11 runs
WAR as a Brewer: 3.1

Bill Hall

Seasons as a Brewer: 8, 2002-2009*
Slash line as a Brewer: .253/.312/.446
UZR (Fielding) as a Brewer: +8.7 runs
WAR as a Brewer: 7.3

* - Hall played third base in seven of those eight seasons, all but 2007.

Wes Helms

Seasons as a Brewer: 3, 2003-2005
Slash line as a Brewer: ..268/.335/.425
UZR (Fielding) as a Brewer: -24.6 runs
WAR as a Brewer: -1.1

Russell Branyan

Seasons as a Brewer: 3, 2004-2005, 2008
Slash line as a Brewer: ..248/.351/.526
UZR (Fielding) as a Brewer: -9.1 runs
WAR as a Brewer: 1.7

Craig Counsell

Seasons as a Brewer: 4, 2004, 2007-2009
Slash line as a Brewer: .247/.341/.338
UZR (Fielding) as a Brewer: +8.5 runs
WAR as a Brewer: 5

Ryan Braun

Seasons as a Brewer: 3, 2007-2009*
Slash line as a Brewer: .308/.363/.574
UZR (Fielding) as a Brewer: -23.7 runs
WAR as a Brewer: 9.7**

* - Braun only played third base in 2007.
** - Only 1.5 of those WAR came in 2007, when Braun was at third.

God, I hate Wes Helms

Voted for Wm. E Hall

Look at that slash line!

E: George 4 (5, throw, throw, throw, throw).

I'm not sure how to handle that.

I think he’d probably have to be pulled off the ballot for the outfield. Hopefully it won’t be an issue.

That's all I've got for you today, unless you're interested in some Chris Capuano/Tom Haudricourt Fan Fiction.

I think you should break it out by seasons at each position if simple

Granted, that would suck for Hall & Ginter, but for a guy like Braun it’s pretty straightforward.

Why is Laporta not an option here?

The man played every position for god’s sake.

TYLER HOUSTON!!!

that guy was awesome.

"That's not a weird stat. Rickie is a run-scorer," Yost said. "It doesn't matter. It doesn't matter," Yost told reporters. "See, you guys have no concept. He's a run-scorer. So there's nothing weird about it. That's what he does."

Am I mistaken

But I could have sworn Koskie played third for 2 seasons?

Speaking of this

how different would things (possibly) have been had he not sufferred that concussion?

It would be amusing if Hall won

Given the general distaste for him until the Ruben Flores trade.

by TheJay on Dec 10, 2009 5:32 PM CST reply actions

Well, the concept of the "All Decade Team" is nebulous.

Are we picking the player who had the best tenure at the position, or the best single year? Because that would make Hall much more palatable.

Also, I am in favor of the Braun at 3B and Braun in LF situation. That’s a potent heart of the order along with Fielder.

For those still to vote

Please consider July 27, 2004 when Russell Branyan hit the longest home run in Miller Parks history at 480 feet which I have been trying to find a video for but cannot.

Well

that’s when we actually had good players. Its pretty slim pickins from 2000-2004

It's got to be lil cc

Hell- seems like he’s been playing here for a damn decade!

by Nicole Haase on Dec 10, 2009 10:32 PM CST reply actions

So these votes...

are for best player at position, or most representative for the decade?

I cast my vote for Big Wes, since I believe his time at 3B in Milwaukee laid the foundation for his 9/28/2008 home run that helped propel the Brewers to the playoffs. Somehow, karma lined up just right (and just enough) to make that go-ahead HR at Shea possible.

You've got a couple screws missin' up in your toolbox, if you think that you'll stop this man from hittin' moonshots.

I'm letting people create their own definition of what an All Decade Team should be.

Whether it’s longevity, peak value, representative of the decade, etc. I’m just supplying what I see as every possible candidate and letting you decide how to vote on it.

That's all I've got for you today, unless you're interested in some Chris Capuano/Tom Haudricourt Fan Fiction.
