Randy Wolf talks about signing with Milwaukee
Tom H. brings you two conversations with our new lefty:
- A conversation between Randy Wolf and Tom H. himself. There's an interesting nugget about making adjustments after leaving pitcher-friendly San Diego to hitter-friendly Houston.
- An interview with Buck Martinez on Sirius, where the personal visit from Melvin in California helped seal the deal. As Al would say (and has), I'm sure the money didn't hurt. Still, when all suitors are offering crates and crates of cash, I wonder if the smaller gestures, like a $1000 plane ride, really do make a difference. I think every time Melvin tries to sign someone, he should send them a case of Sprecher root beer to help grease the skids a little. :)

Every time DM tries to sign someone
I think he should send me a case of Sprecher root beer.
I would like that.
Also, cheese.
Did they think you were funny in Vientiane? :)

Nothing is funny in Vientiane.
The place still has hammer & sickle flags all over the place.
Also, cheese.

Much of Wisconsin still has Tommy Thompson signs
So, yeah, kind of the same thing.

Wolf interview, talking about Hawkins
“He’s one of those guys who can help a team” sounds like faint praise. At least he said something nicer after that.
I think that's real praise
since earlier in the conversaition he said “I’m glad they think I can help the team win.”
The first thing he said was
“He’s an awesome guy and he wants to win.” That’s all I needed to hear, his ability is well established.
Not Just Sprecher
But maybe some Rehorst, Lake Front Brewery, New Glarus along with the Sprecher…

Randy Wolf Talks About the Trade
is the title of this post. Why is he talking about the Gomez trade?
Cards Announcers On Gamel's First Career HR, "That’s all they need is another home run hitter".
That would be awesome
Wolf sits down for an interview with a Brewers beat writer and spends 10 minutes getting detailed questions on the quality of his new starting center fielder and how it might impact how he plays. Then he’d leave scratching his head and wondering how the hell he can get out of the contract so he doesn’t have to stay in Milwaukee for 3 years.
Anyone else see
that Tommy reports on his THblog that Doug Melvin had this to say:
Indianapolis – Brewers general manager Doug Melvin said this morning that he planned to meet in January with left-hander Mark Mulder about launching a comeback attempt in Milwaukee.
Mulder has barely pitched since 2006 because of ongoing arm problems and surgeries but worked in his rehab program this year with new Brewers pitching coach Rick Peterson. The Brewers think Mulder is worth taking a chance on as a low-risk acquisition. They’d offer him a minor-league deal with incentives to pitch in the majors and see what he has left.
This isn’t the “second starter” the Brewers are seeking before spring training. It’s merely an opportunity to maybe catch lightning in a bottle if Mulder gets back to form. Melvin met with his agent, Greg Clifton, here at the winter meetings to discuss Mulder, who would like to stay with Peterson.
Melvin said he and Peterson would probably visit Mulder in Arizona in January. In the meantime, the Brewers are examining Mulder’s medical records. Melvin said if he is satisfield with the medicals, he won’t ask Mulder to throw for the Brewers before signing him.
As for the possibility of adding another starter, Melvin said, "If we can, we’d like to. We might not be able to. We’re always looking to improve the club.
“We’re trying to keep flexibility to do things we can do. The worst thing you can do is lose flexibility.”
Granted, the starting rotation got significantly better (in my opinion) with the signing of Randy Wolf. But…isn’t this sort of Dougie’s logic from last year? Banking on the rotation being league average and the offense carrying the team?
Perhaps over-spending in the bullpen will (again) prevent salary dollars being allocated to the starting rotation?

Really?
Should we start down this road?

The difference is that we actually have some depth this year
Then again that depth is Halama, Son of Narve, and potentially Mulder, so maybe we really don’t have any more depth this year.

True
He adds some valuable depth to the Injury Report.

I can't remember where I saw it
But I saw something that said Wolf would have accepted a two year, $14-16M contract to stay with the dodgers or something like that.
So, both pitchers added
would have preferred to pitch for their old teams.
Sweet.

Nothing they or we can do about it now
Last time I checked free agency meant they get to choose where they sign, so I don’t give a damn how they felt about their old team. All I need to know is they are under contract to perform for the Milwaukee Brewers. I know how you feel about it, but I’m pretty sure I know my own interpretation and that is that if they are content with taking money from the Milwaukee Brewers, they are also content with playing for the Milwaukee Brewers.

Oh yeah
I’d rather take 100k to work in a city I dislike than 50k to work in a city I love.
I just don’t want 50% effort.
And these guys have been touted as great ‘clubhouse guys’ by Mustache & Co. Which seems contrary to their comments.
