NBCSports.com: Brewers should non-tender Bush, Gerut
NBC sports' offseason baseball blog is suggesting that the Brewers would be better served by not offering arbitration to Bush or Gerut, and spend the roughly $6.5 million you're saving on another pitcher. The argument is that Bush's poor season last year would probably keep him from making $4 million as a free agent, and that Gerut won't be used enough to warrant a $2 million investment by the Brewers. In theory, those two could be signed for less, perhaps even by the Brewers.
It certainly would make sense to try to upgrade from Bush, even at the expense of a downgrade from Gerut.

Agree on Bush
It’s a shame they signed Hawkins, because cutting Bush and using that $3.5M that was awarded to Hawkins might have brought another quality starter in. $7.5 is basically what Harden agreed to for next year!
Gerut might end up playing a lot if/when Hart and Gomez struggle. He was very valuable as a starter in 2008 and hopefully the Brewers will find 400 ABs for the lefty.

Right now he's be the only LH hitting veteran the Brewers have in a bench role.
Given the starting lineup is RH-dominant as usual, they probably may keep him just for that even after Counsell is signed.
Don't forget they have Triple G now

Harden
A thing about the Harden contract. Since there are 3.5 MM in incentives, if they’re only paying him 7.5 MM, it’s a bad contract. Because that would mean he was hurt for the whole season, and 7.5MM is down the drain.

good points...
I guess we could try and pay a team 7 or 8 mil to take Suppan off our hands. That would save us another $4ish and we should be able to get a decent 3rd guy for $8. Maybe throw in Hart as well and then definitely sign Gerut. Then we would just need a 5th starter (if Parra is your fourth…he needs another chance!). We are likely going to see if Mulder has anything left and Capuano has already signed a minor league deal. After that we still have a bunch of guys that have started in the past and certainly can’t be worse than Suppan!
I doubt 7 or 8 million would do it...

Right now;
The only person the Brewers need to sign is Geoff Brett Jenkins or Dave Bush. I can see us taking a risk on Mulder, but as much as we want to see him do well, he is only getting older which will make rehab harder.. For this reason, I say sign Bush.
