THwitter Update
Don’t have exact number for Counsell’s new 1-year deal with Brewers but have been told it’s a bit more than $2 M. He had $1 M salary in ’09.

"That's not a weird stat. Rickie is a run-scorer," Yost said. "It doesn't matter. It doesn't matter," Yost told reporters. "See, you guys have no concept. He's a run-scorer. So there's nothing weird about it. That's what he does."

I'll concur with both of the above, and use Lowatt's format.

Wow
$2.1M for a bench player. That’s pretty pricey.
Now, payroll sits at $83.35M with my arb estimates. Wolf is getting $9.25M this year.

He'll earn it
He has been worth over $3M each year he has been a Brewer, I imagine he’ll earn it again this year.
Again with WAR
its not actually a contract predictor/indicator of what a person should have been paid.

If you project him to hit
.250/.330/.370 in 200 plate appearances with plus defense, $2.1 million isn’t out of line, actually. $1 million was a huge bargain last year. Don’t know how anyone can complain about this, his price was obviously going up and I don’t exactly expect Escobar to play 162 in 2010.
E: George 4 (5, throw, throw, throw, throw).
Was I complaining about $2.1M?
Sorry if that’s how you read it.
I was saying I thought $3M was too much for a backup infielder.

Also
Counsell’s deal could potentially get to $2.6M based on bonuses

I doubt he'll hit a whole lot of that incentive money.
I don’t see him starting 75 games. There’d have to be a MAJOR injury in the infield.. or a combination of them. Looks to me like we still need a backup OF and a pitcher. Who fills those spots? My money’s on Oejlten (sp?) and Axford. The only way that pitcher spot if filled with a starter is if they trade one of Suppan, Hart, or Bush. Hart is probably the most likely there.

Agreed
although I best most, if not all of us, would have said the same thing of Counsell prior to 2009.
I guess Oeltjen would have to be the favorite at this point. Or do they go for a guy like Hernan Iribarren who’s got OF and 2B experience for flexibility?

I think they'll go with Oeltjen until somebody gets hurt
Then they’ll bring Irribarren up, since he can begin the year in the minors.

Good point...
but do you think they maybe go with a veteran on the cheap side rather than a minor leaguer who’ll just sit on the bench most of the time?
How about re-signing Catalanotto for cheap? At 35 yo, I can’t imagine he’s getting much interest.
I'm sure they'll explore that option.

That probably depends on how much flexibility Attanasio is willing to lose

CF, 3B, and 2B are all very likely
to produce less than last year. The offseason gives us time to slowly armor ourselves against these things.

:)

Barring a season-ending injury before May
It certainly means we will see career HR #40 in a Brewers uniform. The increased attendance and merchandising potential alone should pay for the contract.

I'm expecting a mid-June celebration
But since he sits at 39, it could happen any day. Even if it happens on Opening Day, they still have the T-shirts potential. Who wouldn’t want an “I was there when CC hit #40” T-shirt?

It would be way more special if it happened ON August 21
then, it could be his 40th on his 40th.

Fine by me
I was really worried he was going to get a Kendall-like contract (2 years, $6 million). This is fine as long as Counsell stays great defensively. He’ll also be a decent substitute in the 2nd half when Rickie blows out his wrists again.
That's not a bad deal at all
Counsell always ends up being more than a bench player anyway. You know you’re going to get a pretty good OBP, but maybe he’ll be able to keep up a decent avg. now that he doesn’t bat like a crazy man any more.
"A D+ Grade? That must have been a Wittardo grade"- @73_MC
Don't forget.
I think Counsell has meant a lot to this team as a leader, and I believe he signed this deal because he wants to stay more than he wants multiple years or more money.
And since he can get on base and field well, it’s not a hollow “he’s a good guy”.
But I do miss seeing the “crazy man” batting stance. When Counsell does it. Not batting stance guy.
Applying Simpsons and Star Wars quotes to Brewers discussions since 2009.
I certainly miss the old stance
but he was a much better hitter last year with the new stance.

Being able to sleep in his own bed half the season probably was a big reason for him re-signing with the Brewers.
During one of the games last season they showed a video of him being interviewed and when he was asked “What do you like most about Miller Park?”, his response was “being able to drive 15-minutes from home”.
I heard
the new contract lets him sleep in the dugout.
"I will agree that the attitude [at BCB] is ridiculous and they have done so much to instigate animosity and then block us from responding. Real mature!"
hahaha, remember that article?
