Making Your '00 Face: Our first backup infielder
With the '00's almost behind us, it's time to take a look back and work together to make a BCB All Decade team for the '00s. Each day, we'll tackle a new position, and we'll have our 25 man roster complete sometime around the 1st of the year.
The concept here is pretty simple. Each day, I'll give you a list of candidates: For position players, it's the full list of players who appeared in at least 100 games at the position during the '00s. Here are the players we've selected so far:
First Base: Prince Fielder
Second Base: Rickie Weeks
Shortstop: J.J. Hardy
Third Base: Bill Hall
Corner Outfield: Ryan Braun
Center Field: Mike Cameron
Catcher: Damian Miller
Voting for our final starting outfielder opened yesterday and will close at 4 pm tomorrow. Today we'll select our first backup infielder:

I would like to vote for Overbay. How many backup infielders do we have?
My next two votes would go to Counsell and Loretta.
Wasn’t Cirillo on the team in the 00’s?

You're right, I should.
I forgot I voted for him for 3B and he didn’t win. He’ll get my second vote.

Problem is
If Sexson wins over Counsell here (or anyone who can’t play short, for that matter), we’ll need to limit the second backup spot to players who can play short, or we won’t have a backup there.
That's all I've got for you today, unless you're interested in some Chris Capuano/Tom Haudricourt Fan Fiction.
That's what I'm saying!

I don't know

I'm not.
I will take his as well as mine.
Problem, solved.

Two
And Cirillo didn’t log 100 games at any position in the ’00s.

Why are people voting for Richie Sexson?
Prince is going to play 160 games, Bill Hall on the other hand will play in 40 games, bat .187 and then get DFA’d — We need 3b depth.

I get that CC is a really good dude, and had a career year in 2009
But doesn’t Richie Sexson really deserve this more?
Really?

No.
But I guess it comes down to whether you’re trying to build an actual (pretend) team or just picking the guys you think are the best players of the decade. If it’s the former, CC’s your guy because he can play all 4 infield positions instead of just 1 behind your best positional player whom you’re never going to rest anyway.

I guess
I thought it was just voting on the guys you thought were the best of the decade. I guess if you’re talking best bench player Sexson shouldn’t be there. But, honestly, he was a great big part of the team in some of those dark years, and to not make the All Decade Team because he couldn’t hope to beat out Fielder is silly.

well, the poll does say "first" backup infielder
That implies a second. Sexson is more productive, but Counsell is more useful.
Sometimes I wonder if we here at Brew Crew Ball
would prefer just the best UZR performing players at every position.

I truly appreciate the tongue-in-cheek
but I think my comment has some validity. I’m a victim of it as well. That’s sort of the problem with having a pretty darn well-informed community—we all want to use the advanced metrics to analyze players. I know I was blasted a bit for making a long post about having emotional attachments to the team and specific players, but I don’t know that voting for one guy over another based just on his numbers is the way to go.
I’m not saying that you or someone else can’t do that, just for me I’ll be voting with some emotional bias on these :)

I feel the same way about Lyle Overbay....
… and it’s pretty much why I still hate Jose Hernandez even though I now realize, in retrospect, that his K’s weren’t as crippling as they seemed to me at the time.

I voted Counsell because he's got more value/use than Sexson

Ginter
Really – who voted for Keith Ginter?

Why the hatred for Ginter?
The guy OPSed .792 with the Brewers — he wasn’t that bad.

Sexson OPS'd .902

Overbay only OPS'd .840
but, man, did he ever put the ball in the gaps. Plus, his sweet cheer was worth at least .075 OPS points.

But Branyan hti the longest HR in Miller Park's illustrious history!
All Sexson did was hit some flag pole for a triple.
And, for a real argument in Branyans favor over Sexson.
If this were a real team, you already have Fielder starting basically all the games at 1B, which is the only position Sexson can play, if we are only counting times when they played with the Brewers. Branyan can play first and third along with a little bit of the outfield as well!
You're forgetting how awesome Branyan is again

Branyan’s awesomeness is not forgotten. He can be an NRI to All Decade Team ST.

Did anyone else reverse the pig latin in Overbay’s surname and call him Bover? or was that just me?

Obviously, it's a little trivial
But over 400 people have voted and people have posted 50+ comments about it, so it appears people are finding some relevance/entertainment in it.

It is soul-crushing that Russell Branyan is in 5th place.
Seriously. Where would Sexson and Overbay play if this were an actual team? Nowhere!! Whereas Branyan would steal the 3rd base job from Bill Hall within two weeks.
Don't look at me.
I didn’t vote for Bill Hall. :)

They would play the power off the bench
Useful for the exhibition homer- and double-off following the 12th.
Are there other SBN pages doing a decade team?
Can we trade hall to them?
