Making Your '00 Face: Backup Outfielder
With the '00's almost behind us, it's time to take a look back and work together to make a BCB All Decade team for the '00s. Each day, we'll tackle a new position, and we'll have our 25 man roster complete sometime around the 1st of the year.
The concept here is pretty simple. Each day, I'll give you a list of candidates: For position players, it's the full list of players who appeared in at least 100 games at the position during the '00s. Here are the players we've selected so far:
First Base: Prince Fielder
Second Base: Rickie Weeks
Shortstop: J.J. Hardy
Third Base: Bill Hall
Corner Outfield: Ryan Braun
Center Field: Mike Cameron
Corner Outfield: Geoff Jenkins
Catcher: Damian Miller
Bench IF: Craig Counsell
Voting for a our backup catcher opened yesterday and will close at 4 pm tomorrow. Today we need to select a fourth outfielder.

Corey Hart really didn't make the cut?
I mean, sure, he frustrates all of us, but…he’s gotta be better than scotty pods…
Brewers Baseball and other assorted nonsense (mostly the assorted nonsense) at my blog, What's a Tararrel?
I think you're underrating how valuable he was.
Sure, he didn’t hit a lot of home runs, but Podsednik was a great base stealer. He leads Hart in WAR by a wide margin.
That's all I've got for you today, unless you're interested in some Chris Capuano/Tom Haudricourt Fan Fiction.
That's from Rally's database?
Fangraphs has Hart ahead (6.5 to 5). This is a baserunning thing, right? Was Pods that valuable on the bases?

Oh, hmph
Actually it’s about fielding. Total Zone thinks Pods was a way above-average fielder with the Crew, and UZR thinks he was bad in ’03 and mediocre in ’04

At the risk of sounding like Ramblin' Al
and looking like a loser for commenting on myself, this really does frustrate me about fielding metrics. Total Zone has Pods at +17 for ‘03, and UZR has him at -8.0. ’04 is +24 and -0.6, respectively. That’s a huge gap—either he was one of the best CFs in baseball for 2 years, or a crap fielder. How do we work with that? I wouldn’t throw them completely out the window, because I think it’s better to try to measure defense than just write it all off and try to eyeball it, but I wish we could get a little more consistency about this stuff. I know defensive metrics usually agree, but these outliers drive me batty

Well, unless I'm mistaken
Total Zone includes a rating for his arm, whereas UZR does not…right?

You're going to get some very weird outliers for TotalZone
Rally’s database is a great starting point and over a career TotalZone is really accurate, but it’s even less reliable than UZR over the course of a single year, or even 2. When we’re dealing with post 2002, I’d suggest using UZR.
E: George 4 (5, throw, throw, throw, throw).
Pods!
If you were building an actual team, a guy who stole 114 bases in his two years here and who can play all three OF spots is a decent bench player.
Ryan Braun: He loves it.
Ditto
For a 4th OF that can play all three positions – is a left handed bat – and can steal bases at will… yeah I want him on my team.

You're talking about Carlos Lee, right?
Cards Announcers On Gamel's First Career HR, "That’s all they need is another home run hitter".
Lee?
Really?
Sigh.

It is nice to have a power bat on the bench for pinch hitting purposes...
… but again it comes down to whether you’re trying to build a team that fits together and can play vs. a team of the perceived best players of the decade. If it’s the former a portly 4th outfielder with a bad glove doesn’t make a lot of sense. But if it’s the latter, Lee was a big part of his team for 18 months…
What begins in fear usually ends in folly.

I'm seriously going to stop voting on these if Scotty doesn't make the team
particularly if Lee beats him out.

Yeah, and Scotty Po sucked, right?
Its less about what I have against a guy, and more about who produced for longer.
Thanks, though.
