Making Your '00 Face: Closer
With the '00's almost behind us, it's time to take a look back and work together to make a BCB All Decade team for the '00s. Each day, we'll tackle a new position, and we'll have our 25 man roster complete sometime around the 1st of the year.
The concept here is pretty simple. Each day, I'll give you a list of candidates: For position players, it's the full list of players who appeared in at least 100 games at the position during the '00s. Here are the players we've selected so far:
First Base: Prince Fielder
Second Base: Rickie Weeks
Shortstop: J.J. Hardy
Third Base: Bill Hall
Corner Outfield: Ryan Braun
Center Field: Mike Cameron
Corner Outfield: Geoff Jenkins
Catcher: Damian Miller
Bench IF: Craig Counsell
Bench C: Mike Rivera
Bench COF: Carlos Lee

What does Trevor Hoffman's 8 BB/0 mean?
Applying Simpsons and Star Wars quotes to Brewers discussions since 2009.
I changed it to 8.0 K/9 to match the other pitcher's lines
I don’t know how the original came about.

Good stuff

$$$
Assuming that $$$ is not a consideration and that I don’t have to pay his $10M/year I choose CoCo.

payroll
I hope at some point someone posts what the average payroll of this team would have been.

Hoffman's doing a lot better than I expected.
Just because Cordero’s on another NL Central team now and left a bit acrimoniously doesn’t mean he didn’t pitch really well while he was with the Crew.
WAR pre and post Bobblehead day?
I would be very interested to see the splits on Turnbow before and after that Turnbow bobblehead day…

Really?
I mean..Hoffman’s been the closer for one season. And he posted career-stats that season. Boy, this sure is starting to lend credence to my poseur-Hoffman-fan theory.

Turbo and Cordero were only closers for a season and a half each
E: George 4 (5, throw, throw, throw, throw).
it's for "as a Brewer"
The only logical statistically-based choices are for Hoffman or Cordero. I voted for CoCo because he was indeed really really good when he was here and he was here for two seasons. I admittedly like Turnbow the best of them (followed by Hoffman) but this is for an all-decade team, not an “all Brewers I like for inexplicable reasons” team.
sure
For me, its like the Twins fans who just absolutely love Paul Molitor, and think of him as one of their best players of all-time.

the situation is slightly different
At least Hoffman did have a career season here and wasn’t just coasting on reputation.
Molitor's '96 with the Twins was pretty spectacular
But, if you wish, I think Brett Favre the Viking is a better analogy anyway.
Doesn’t mean I don’t root for the guy to do well. Its just that the vast majority of what he’ll inevitably be inducted into the hall of fame for was work done while playing on a different team. Some folks agree with me, a lot disagree. That’s cool.

So Vikings fans are poseur fans for liking him?
Am I correct in saying that this whole ‘poseur fan’ thing started when there was talk about Hoffman getting his 600th save as a Brewer?
I don’t think anyone’s going to go nuts and say that he’ll be inducted into the HOF as a Brewer, or that the Brewers will retire his number. The only reason people think it would be cool is because it’s a historic moment in history. It’s much like seeing McGwire hit #62 in your stadium. People will show up with their flashbulbs and take interest in it for a while. How marketable is it? Not very much, but it’s not like people are trying to pretend that everything great he ever did happened in this city…

nice redundancy with the historic moment in history
what’s the word, KL?

I understand you point
but it doesn’t change my opinion in the least.

About retiring #51
There’s no way Hoffman goes into the HOF as a Brewer, but Fingers and Aaron didn’t either, and their numbers were retired by the Brewers. So I would not consider it ‘nuts’ to see 51 join 4, 19, 34, 42, 44 and 50 atop the wall at MP.
You've got a couple screws missin' up in your toolbox, if you think that you'll stop this man from hittin' moonshots.
I figured
if I didn’t include Uecker, someone would mention the omission.

other way around..

I consider Rollie Fingers the best closer in Brewers history, even though for most of his career he was with the Athletics and had a career year here in 1981. I don’t think that makes me a “poseur fan”…
Ryan Braun: He loves it.
OK
So…I should just change my opinion then?
