Rumorville: Randy Wolf, Doug Davis
Nothing especially new here, but Jon Heyman cites the Brewers as among the teams with interest in Randy Wolf. This dovetails nicely with Tom H's report:
Wolf also says he is being courted by several teams, including a couple that have been "aggressive." Though Brewers GM Doug Melvin has kept his plans secret in his search for pitching, it wouldn't surprise me one bit if Milwaukee is one of those aggressive teams. It's my understanding that Wolf is high on the list of pitchers the Brewers are showing interest in.
Tom also lists Doug Davis as being on this fabled list.

So, eventually Doug will have to go to a 4 year offer
for Wolf. What do you think, 4/42.5?

If we're lucky.

FWIW
There’s a guy over at the CBSsports Brewers forums who correctly told us about the Braun extension 2 days before it happened, and another move (I think it might have been Ray Durham, can’t remember). He says he has an inside source. He’s saying at this thread (and a couple of others, under a different screenname) that the Brewers are going to sign Wolf to a 3/27 deal. I’ve doubted him everytime in the past and been burned. So, take that as you want.

To be honest
I think Wolf can get at least 4 and $40, hopefully not from us.

Last 3
His last 3 contracts were all 1 year deals. Id be pretty shocked to see a going into his 33 year old season to get a 4 year deal, with the econonmy the way it is. His bonus in all of this is that he is one of only a handful of guys worth pursuing in this years FA pitching market.
Id say hes probably worth 3 years/$25 million or if you went that extra mile and offered 4/ $30 million. If the Brewers were to pursue him, which I dont think they should for reasons listed below, I wouldnt want to see them give him anything more than 2 years, $18 million.

I guess I'd be shocked
if he signed for less than two years, and a little surprised if it’s less than three. With the exception of Lackey, he’s the healthiest pitcher out there (which is funny, given his health history), and he doesn’t cost a pick to sign. I guess we’ll see (though probably not until Lackey signs).

Wolf
Braden Looper II?
I took a look at his numbers from last year….
He was the luckiest pitcher in the NL, is in the top of the league in fly ball and HR, is aging and wants an extended deal, and the move from Dodger Stadium to Miller Park does not help either. I would pass on him.
Agreed
Id take Lackey if they had a chance. But he will be overpaid, and I would only want him for 2 years, 3 tops.
That's a lot....
There’s a lot of pitchers out there. Even Tim Lincecum has downside (size and mechanics put excess stress on his rotator cuff ). Now having said that… (Curb your enthusiasm ref, anyone?).
The point is to find bargains, gems in the rough, something Mustache used to be very good at. Wolf is the opposite of a bargain, a perpetual injury risk coming off one of the best years of his career. We’ve discussed some possible bargains in numerous previous posts. My favorites are Smoltz and Penny if they’d come at reasonable short-term contracts. The operative word there is IF. No more 4 yr Suppan contracts!!
bargains
You don’t find FA pitcher Bargains. The Bargains that DM finds are generally bench players. If you are going to bring in a decent SP through Free Agency, you can’t search through the bargain bin; you have to overpay.

So what would you do?

I would
Gear up for a rebuild.
Spending money on risky upside pitching (not withstanding the info posted by baldeagle) is just spending good money after bad. Id use the money that isnt spent on FA pitching and put it into the draft and player development, and then trade Prince Fielder for a big prospect package that includes at least 2 or 3 high upside pitchers (and a first baseman). And then be happy that there was a sunny horizon out there and not worry about the couple of losing seasons to endure.
But that philosophy is bad for business.
