Making Your '00 Face: Final position player

With the '00's almost behind us, it's time to take a look back and work together to make a BCB All Decade team for the '00s. Each day, we'll tackle a new position, and we'll have our 25 man roster complete sometime around the 1st of the year.

Here are the players we've selected so far:

First Base: Prince Fielder
Second Base: Rickie Weeks
Shortstop: J.J. Hardy
Third Base: Bill Hall
Corner Outfield: Ryan Braun
Center Field: Mike Cameron
Corner Outfield: Geoff Jenkins
Catcher: Damian Miller
Bench IF: Craig Counsell
Bench C: Mike Rivera
Bench COF: Carlos Lee
Bench OF: Scott Podsednik

#1 SP: Ben Sheets
Closer: Francisco Cordero

Voting for our #2 starter opened yesterday and will close at 4 pm tomorrow. Today, we'll select our final bench player. Because we have a backup at every position among our first four bench players, our final bench spot can be filled by any of the remaining candidates at any position. Follow the jump for their stats, then cast your vote in the poll below.

NOTE: Because Thursday and Friday are holidays, this poll will remain open a little longer than usual. You have until Saturday at 4 pm to cast your vote.

* - FanGraphs only has UZR data dating back to 2002, so only Hernandez's 2002 season is included here.

Mark Loretta

Seasons as a Brewer: 3, 2000-2002*
Slash line as a Brewer: .281/.348/.374
UZR (Fielding) as a Brewer: -2.7 runs**
WAR as a Brewer: 1.8

* - Loretta was also a Brewer from 1995-1999, but those numbers aren't included here.

Slash line as a Brewer: .251/.327/.384
UZR (Fielding) as a Brewer: -6.9 runs**

* - Belliard was also a Brewer in 1998 and 1999. All stats here only reflect his performance from 2000-2009.

UZR (Fielding) as a Brewer: +8.2 runs
WAR as a Brewer: 1.2

Richie Sexson

Seasons as a Brewer: 4, 2000-2003
Slash line as a Brewer: .276/.366/.536
UZR (Fielding) as a Brewer: -10.6 runs*
WAR as a Brewer: 10.2

* - FanGraphs only has UZR data since 2002, so this number does not reflect Sexson's 2000 and 2001 performances.

Lyle Overbay

Seasons as a Brewer: 2, 2004-2005
Slash line as a Brewer: .289/.376/.464
UZR (Fielding) as a Brewer: -12.3 runs

STOP VOTING FOR RICHIE SEXSON!

RUSSELL BRANYAN CAN PLAY MORE POSITIONS AND SO WOULD ACTUALLY GET PLAYING TIME ON THIS HYPOTHETICAL TEAM!

by NoahJ on Dec 22, 2009 6:24 PM CST up reply actions

Why are you taking this so seriously?

Sexson meant more to the Brewers then Branyan ever did. Yes if this was a real team, Sexson would never play, but wait, this team sucks! The Brewers were terrible for the first 7 years of the decade and Sexson was one of the bright spots during that terrible time.

by Berlin Saints on Dec 22, 2009 7:41 PM CST up reply actions

Because Branyan was super-awesome!

It’s not like I would actually be pissed if Branyan loses. I won’t go grumping around my house and throw things around. I just have always liked Russell Branyan. And if we were just going for best players, regardless of whether/where they would actually play, then we probably would just vote for Burnitz or Sexson or Branyan or someone to play catcher, because god knows we haven’t had any real good catchers this decade.

I think you should grump around your house and throw things, just for fun.

Why wouldn't we take it seriously?

Do you not follow this place?

This is a VERY serious matter.

You can see how people voted on their user profiles.

And before you figure it out yourselves…ummmm….I voted for Sexson. I immediately regretted it. I was seduced by his WAR and triple-slash stats. I hope you can find it in your hearts to forgive me.

Gotta be Sexson.

In 2 of his 3 full seasons, he hit 45HR’s and drove in over 120 RBI’s. Not too many seasons like that outside of Prince this decade…

I cannot argue with a vote for Mark Loretta

For anything. Even if it’s for the worst player award. Loretta deserves to win something.

by Hyatt on Dec 22, 2009 10:51 PM CST reply actions

Yes

For the MI, we already have a guy on the team. Branyon can back up both CI positions.

Sexson the Muscle

Branyan PA/HR with the Brewers: 16.45
Sexson PA/HR with the Brewers: 16.37

Except his OBP was about 30 points higher, and he sustained it over about 1500 more PA. I’ll take Richie for the clutch 3TO spot.

Ryan Braun: He loves it.

by SRB on Dec 23, 2009 12:07 AM CST reply actions

I voted for Branyan

If his only position on the team is to hit balls into Lake Michigan for batting practice, I am all for it.
