Winter League Update for 12/24/2009
In Venezuela: Alcides Escobar went 0-for-4 with a walk and scored a run for Lara.
The hitless performance dropped Escobar's batting average to .385, still good enough to win the VWL batting title by four points over Mets prospect Josh Thole. He also finished sixth in the league with a .430 OBP, 11th with a .915 OPS, tied for seventh in hits (65), and tied for fifth in stolen bases (13).
In Mexico: Luis Cruz went 1-for-4 and scored a run.
In Puerto Rico: Efrain Nieves had his longest outing in the PWL, pitching 3.1 innings in relief and allowing no runs on two hits and no walks, striking out two. He now has a 3.27 ERA in 11 innings, and has more strikeouts (11) than hits allowed (10).

if escobar can hit like this next year will anyone ever remember hardy
I doubt he'll hit .385.
I think he’ll hit, but he won’t hit for power like Hardy did, which we’ll all miss. It will be his defense that makes us forget about Hardy.

The issue with Escobar
is his lack of power. He’ll need to maintain a .300 AVG or higher in order to make up for it on the offensive side of the ball, and hope for a nice OBP so that he can utilize his speed on the bases. Kenny’s going to be more open to running this year, so if Escobar can get on base 35% of the time, I’m sure he’ll be allowed to run at least 9 times.

Actually
The issues are his lack of power and his lack of plate discipline. He’ll need to hit .300 just to keep a .340 OBP and .390 slugging.
That's all I've got for you today, unless you're interested in some Chris Capuano/Tom Haudricourt Fan Fiction.
One of my favorite slightly wierd statistacal players

He will utilize his speed in so many more ways than base running.
He will beat out double plays, score from first, alter defensive positioning force the pitcher to pay extra attention to him, redirect throws from the outfield…. These are all things that Hardy never did, and will help us forget about his power.
