I’d imagine that the number of games we expect out of our “#1” is going to go way down.

Only question now is if it’s Rivera, Kottaras or Lucroy as the 2.

Replacement Level Bands...

… by decade:

70’s: Fleetwood Mac
80’s: Men At Work
90’s: Weezer
00’s: No idea. I’m too old to give a damn anymore, and by 2000, I started listening to obscure artists no one else had ever heard of.

None of them are terrible. They’ve all got a song or two you’d know the words to if you were old enough. They don’t generate the passion of Zeppelin, U2 etc., but you don’t hope their bus rolls off the road into a canyon when they’re on tour (like Styx, Journey, the Bangles, or f’in Frankie Goes to Hollywood, yeah, I’m old) either. And nobody lights a candle and cries like a little girl when they break up.

The fact that he is a switch hitter is something of a bonus since we do not exactly have many guys that hit left-handed. I also like the fact that it is basically a 1 year deal with the hope that Lucroy and/or Salome might be ready in 2011 to play full-time. But if not we have an option for a 2nd year.

Macha isn't Yost

Kendall still started way too much last season, but at least Macha wasn’t trying to plug him into every single game like Yost always did.

I really doubt Zaun starts anywhere near 120 games, given his playing history. Whether that means he’ll be splitting time with Lucroy or who is still up in the air, though.

by Ted Simmons Speed Camp on Dec 4, 2009 3:03 PM CST up reply actions

Does he hate rookies ...

or just Gamel? I mean, McGehee was a rookie this year, and he got a lot of run.

by Rubie Q on Dec 4, 2009 3:07 PM CST up reply actions

Fair point.

Though McGehee had played at the MLB level in 2008, while Gamel hadn’t, and he still played Counsell at 3rd quite a bit over both Gamel and McGehee. Zaun doesn’t have Kendall’s resume either, though their not all that different at this point of their careers, and Macha already showed a willingness to rotate his starting catcher out regularly last season.

I’m probably just being paranoid. I just don’t want Lucroy or Salome for that matter to make the major league club and then gather cobwebs on the bench like Gamel did last year when they (particularly Lucroy) could be getting regular at bats in the minors.

What begins in fear usually ends in folly.

by Ted Simmons Speed Camp on Dec 4, 2009 3:48 PM CST up reply actions

McGehee took a long time to earn a shot too, though.

Before Weeks got hurt, he had played 11 times in 38 games. Then he got a few starts at second, swung a hot bat and by the time he cooled down, he’d cemented a spot in the lineup.

That's all I've got for you today, unless you're interested in some Chris Capuano/Tom Haudricourt Fan Fiction.

Assumptions

So does Lucroy start in the minors now, instead of wasting away on the bench 4/5 games?

Or does he start in the minors and let Kotteras play the bench role. Do they stick Kotteras down in the minors for deep depth and let Rivera play? There are far too many catchers right now. Somebody has to be moved. I don’t see how Rivera is tendered a contract from the Brewers.

I was trying for Brent Brewer

And never having seen a picture of him until today, I thought he was white.

But seriously, sub 600 OPS your second go at A-ball, and you suck at defense? I could do that.

Triple G seems to really like his math rock

including System of a Down, his homies from Glendale. Does this correlate to a higher OBP than, say, a Green Day fan?

For those who are not fans of this signing

remember it could be a lot worse

"That's not a weird stat. Rickie is a run-scorer," Yost said. "It doesn't matter. It doesn't matter," Yost told reporters. "See, you guys have no concept. He's a run-scorer. So there's nothing weird about it. That's what he does."

Hard to complain about this signing

Me too.

When people were talking about the multiple teams interested in his services, I figured that meant he’d get more money. Getting him for less than $2 million is a pretty nice move. One has to wonder what other teams were offering, if that was the best he felt he could do.

Maybe that, and then again, maybe it was more like the Simpsons buying an RV.

Something like

Zaun, you’ll never play for a better team, and I don’t meant that in a good way..
I mean, literally, buddy. This is it for you, you know. It’s this or the Pirates.

Probably comes down to starting..

Since Doug said he’d start 4 out of 5 games he wants to prove that he’s not an old guy. I don’t think the move is bad as long as he’s not allowed to start those 4 out of 5 games. It’s got to be pretty boring sitting on a bench every day.

second best mention of early rap today

Check this from the WaPo:

“A Nov. 26 article in the District edition of Local Living incorrectly said a Public Enemy song declared 9/11 a joke. The song refers to 911, the emergency phone number.”

"That's not a weird stat. Rickie is a run-scorer," Yost said. "It doesn't matter. It doesn't matter," Yost told reporters. "See, you guys have no concept. He's a run-scorer. So there's nothing weird about it. That's what he does."

did they just search for 911 rap?

and then proceed to read one line of the lyrics?

Very good move

Zaun is pretty much ideal, because he’s going to be pretty good but is old and has some health concerns. Even if you only get 90 games out of him that allows Lucroy to get worked into the lineup a bit. This is about the best solution they could have had to the catcher situation.

So...

… tallying up the offseason so far from a monetary perspective, they’ve gone from Cameron, Hardy and Kendall playing for about 19 million to Gomez, Escobar and Zaun for about 5 million.

That’s a nice chunk of change, but it doesn’t mean squadoosh if they don’t spend it right…

What begins in fear usually ends in folly.

Interesting...

Cheaper than Kendall and appears to be at least as good offensively. But the real question is… can he call a good game? :)
