Why did #Brewers sign Gregg Zaun? Source said Jason Kendall was seeking $5 million to come back for another year

Ed Price from fanhouse.com. Jason Kendall's .636 OPS last season was far and away the worst among MLB catchers with enough ABS to qualify for the batting title.

Awesome.

Thanks for the chuckles Kendall.

I was watching Studio 42 w/ Bob Costas yesterday — He was interviewing Jim Bouton. Bouton is running some sort of “vintage league”, where the players dress and play 19th century baseball. They showed a clip of some dude swinging with all his might, and barely getting the ball to the 3rd baseman. I was thinking to myself, Kendall gets that ball through the hole. It then occurred to me Kendall could be the greatest 19th century player to live in the 21st century, the world has ever seen.

.636

The heck with catchers – Kendall’s .636 was the worst in all of baseball except for Renteria, Betancourt and Bonfacio.

His .305 SLG was the worst in baseball as well.

He was bad at catching.

Why not ask for $10M/2yrs? — It’s not as if he hasn’t leaped over the absurdity fence a long time ago.

It sounds like a silly demand

But with bonuses and his vesting option, he got over $9M on a 2 yr deal coming off a .610 OPS two years ago. He even put up an OPS over .700 over the final two months, just like he did in 2007. Good job, Doug, not letting that sway you this time.

I think you're misreading it.

I think it is:
Q: Why did Brewers sign Gregg Zaun?
A: Kendall wanted $5 mil

NOT “Why did Brewers sign Gregg Zaun? That’s stupid, Kendall only wanted $5 mil to come back!”

Applying Simpsons and Star Wars quotes to Brewers discussions since 2009.

Nah.

I thought the same thing when I read it, too.

At first me too

This circles back to the why does a crappy hitter play so much question

But it’s hard for a catcher to qualify for the batting title. Only nine of them did it last year and one of those spent half the year at first base.

Really...

who cares, as long as they call a good game. And grit.

What happened?

Did Weekend Dad have a little too much fun on Friday night again and forget to pick us up from Weekday Dad’s?

I'm assuming there will be a weekend Mug tomorrow morning

In the meantime, I didn’t see much news break today, and there’s still some conversation going on regarding yesterday’s moves.

That's all I've got for you today, unless you're interested in some Chris Capuano/Tom Haudricourt Fan Fiction.

Ouch

And Weekday dad doesn’t want us either.

Just playing though, not that it matters much to me other than the fact that I’m looking for something to help me procrastinate writing papers.

Yeah, It wasn't great, but it was something that Weekend Dad lets you watch

much like scrambled porn.

I don't think I am old enough to be dad to anyone on this site.

But the weekend mug is up now. I’m still trying to decide if its best posting it for saturday night or sundaya morning. Would you (or anyone) prefer saturday nights better?

I'm totally indifferent

but if there needs to be a tie breaking vote, I will cast it!

You can do what I do

I’ve been posting daily mugs at 3 in the morning every day for years. I only leave it up for one minute, though, before deleting it. It’s like the Great Pumpkin of daily mugs.
