VWL Games in Florida
This was in Friday's Frosty Mug but I wanted to bring it up for discussion once again. The two games between Venezuelan teams Lara and Zulia will take place at 1pm ET each day.
I wonder why MLB would rather show a Mark Fidrych game and whatever "The Pen" series covers rather than either of these games. Maybe it's because they aren't MLB events and they didn't want to haggle with the VWL over money-sharing. Maybe the field they're playing at isn't conducive to a good TV broadcast. Maybe the interest just isn't there. Either way, this seems like something the MLB network would want to show - off-season baseball games featuring young MLB players and stars. Then again, it is MLB network, not the baseball network.

because somebody else has the rights
I know ESPN has rights to broadcast the Dominican winter league. They did have the Venezuelan league last year. I’ve been watching the Dominican games for the last month and a half. I’m not sure if other cable networks have the rights for the other leagues for 2009.
Also the facilities may not be up to the standards for nationwide broadcast. Sure, here in St. Paul, the Saints are on local access cable all the time and they actually have a PBP guy and a color guy and at least two cameras, but it looks like a minor league game being broadcast on local TV. Does that sell national ad space? Probably not.

But, even if ESPN has the rights to these games
The question holds in a broader sense.
MLB Network holds the rights to the AFL, for example, and only broadcast two games: the All Star game and the Championship. Maybe they don’t have wide appeal, but even if a small audience watched them they’d probably draw better ratings than the same classic replays running over and over.
That's all I've got for you today, unless you're interested in some Chris Capuano/Tom Haudricourt Fan Fiction.
if they did
I’d watch them more often. They need to change out the games every so often because they’ve run most of these before already.
good point
Although I’m not really sure how much more ratings they’d draw to make the added expense of having crews for the games worthwhile. Ad sales for cable TV, the last I’ve heard, are really really down which is why infomercials are everywhere these days; and if you’ve ever watched the other sport-specific networks like NBA TV the quality of ad running on anything but games is pretty low and the ones running during the games aren’t much better.
ESPN Deportes doesn’t even run most of the Dominican games—there’s soccer on most of the time and then there’s the requirements to run stuff like Monday Night Football. I haven’t checked yet to see if they put the stuff on ESPN 360 even if it’s not on TV (despite all appearances, I’m not online 100% of the time.)
