The link points to a handy reference page to bookmark for the offseason. The upcoming week is pretty important for fringe players both on and off 40-man rosters.

The Winter Meetings take place in Indianapolis Monday through Thursday and always feature a lot of hot stove gossip. As the Weekend Mug notes, there are already rumors of two big MLB announcements (ooooooo...).

The Rule 5 Draft takes place on the final day of the Winter Meetings, meaning a number of 40-man roster outcasts might be on the move to new organizations. The Brewers are unlikely to select someone unless it is for another team but you never know.

Finally, Saturday is the day teams have to make a decision about tendering contracts to players. Anyone who isn't tendered a contract becomes a free agent. It has long been expected that Seth McClung will be a casualty of this process. Jody Gerut and Mike Rivera might also hit the unemployment line.

Thanks

I don’t have a category for "washed-up guys who may or may not be dominant big-league closers sometime soon."

Seconded

That's all I've got for you today, unless you're interested in some Chris Capuano/Tom Haudricourt Fan Fiction.

possible non-tender thoughts

-Mike Rivera seems like a lock to be non-tendered
-McClung seems to think he is in the same boat
-It won’t happen, but what if Jody Gerut is kept and CoreyHart is non-tendered or traded (for a bullpen arm (Manny Delcarmen?)) and an OF who kills Left-handed pitching is brought in to platoon in RF (could be cheaper and better than Hart)
-I like Dave Bush as a #5, but depending on how many pitchers Doug signs, how soon he signs them and how much they cost, Bush could be on the bubble

I'm assuming

Parra comes back. If we get two FA starters, as Melvin is looking for, that only leaves one spot for Suppan and Bush. You know, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Bush let go. If he goes to arbitration, he’ll probably make at least $5 million (he made $4 million last season). That’s a lot to pay for a guy whose ERA as a Brewer is only a smidge under 5.

Why do you think we won't partake in the Rule 5 draft?

I guess they could pick someone to round out the bullpen or maybe a fifth outfielder

Assuming suitable players are eligible. I just don’t think it’s likely they pick anyone to keep. First, the upside of eligible players has gone down since the number of years before players become eligible was extended. Second, the Crew hasn’t picked and kept a Rule 5 guy since 2003.
