"The Dodgers have 3-4 teams interested in $$ Juan Pierre and a 3-team deal is being explored to get L.A. a bad-contract starter in return."

Soup is pretty much the definition of "bad-contract starter," and Juan Pierre might be an interesting addition to the team, in addition to freeing up Hart (or Gamel) for a potential trade.

A Braun / Gomez / Pierre outfield would be pretty decent defensively, too.

Pierre has a noodle arm that you can't put in RF

I’m not sure moving Braun again is a good idea given that he hasn’t exactly mastered left field.

That would probably minimize defensive output even more

Considering Gomez is one of the best defensive center fielders in baseball.

The bad-contract starter is not Lowe.

According to the twittering guy here

"I will agree that the attitude [at BCB] is ridiculous and they have done so much to instigate animosity and then block us from responding. Real mature!"

Maybe if they were both in the final years of their contracts.

Pierre would arguably be the fifth outfielder on the team right now (assuming Gerut isn’t non-tendered and Hart isn’t traded). Might as well just countdown the final days of the Great Suppan Nightmare and rejoice for 2011. Though it would be kind of cool to have 3 guys in the lineup who could potentially steal 40+ bases along with two guys who could hit 40+ HR.

Ryan Braun: He loves it.

How does this help the pitching staff?

If this deal enables the brewers to turn around and trade Hart + others for Vasquez from the Braves I’m all for it.

Or maybe there is a 3 team deal that gives pierre to say the Royals and gives the Brewers Gil Meche. In this situation the brewers would probably also need to send some prospects to the Royals.

Interesting options. But if this trade is just straight up, I’m really not in favor of adding a $9/ year 4th outfielder. Prefer to just keep ‘Soup in the pen for a year. I think he’d be a pretty good long reliever at this point in his career, not considering his salary.

$9?

I’ll take. $9M, not so much:P

But also implied in a 3 team trade rumor, is probably the team that gives up pierre won’t gain suppan nor vice versa;)

(yeah, yeah…a 3rd team might provide spare parts to one, while getting crumbs on another angle, but then why not just work out independent trades?)

Ssssh

We’re talking about trading Jeff Suppan here. Don’t spook them.

I don’t care if we get Juan Pierre. I don’t care if we get his cousin, Bob Pierre, a plumber from Queens. The Soup has been worse than replacement for the past two seasons. His mere absence helps the team.

Unlike Gomez, Pierre is confused about his nationality.

Now that Tom H is on the case, I’m assuming this possibility is going to die a quick death.

so platoon 'em

How much defense does it take to offset a 70 point difference in average? Add that to Pierre being a superior base-stealer and us not having Soup on the mound every 5th day…I’d take this deal in a jiffy.

Why would the Dodgers trade to get Suppan?

Do they really need a subpar starter in their rotation?

by sjlee on Dec 7, 2009 3:58 PM CST reply actions

I think it's more about getting rid of Pierre's contract for them.

They could eat some of his contract, take Suppan’s and still save a couple million dollars, probably. Sort of what the Brewers did with Bill Hall—they are still paying a lot of his contract, but save a little bit of money.

The more I think about this, the more I like it.

Pierre’s defense doesn’t hurt you very much if he’s coming off the bench

yeah

Sinking 12 million into someone of marginal usefulness is a given, but I think spending that on Juan Pierre is probably more useful to the Brewers than Suppan.
