Some guy at JSonline blog said

“this could be the end of the Counsell era in Milwaukee”.

I just don’t get that thinking. Some stiff who hasn’t ever been anything but mediocre to sub-mediocre is going to suddenly make the 25-man and take Counsell’s place as super-sub?

Riiiiiiight.

Don’t you think Heether would be about 15 slots ahead of Cruz?

Are they comparable?

I was under the assumption Heether wasn’t a realistic option to play SS— maybe I’m just reading Rambling Al too much.

With that said, I really don’t see him making the MLB team regardless of his ability to play SS.

Right

He wouldn’t be a world beater defensively at SS. His RF/G at 3.27 last season at SS (and 3.99 for his MiLB career) isn’t good, but I’d guess if you’re talking 15 starts, who cares? And it may not even be that many.

And BTW

posted another fanshot.

Rosenthal is saying the Padres may non-tender Kevin Correia. I’d take that for some depth.

I'm filing this one under Depth, Organizational

Someone needs to play SS in Nashville.

That's all I've got for you today, unless you're interested in some Chris Capuano/Tom Haudricourt Fan Fiction.

by Kyle Lobner on Dec 7, 2009 1:36 PM CST reply actions

I hope that's what it is

it’s just clogging the 40-man, that’s the problem.

by morineko on Dec 7, 2009 1:37 PM CST up reply actions

Not really a big deal.

If they need another 40-man spot, they can DFA him and he might not get claimed.

That's all I've got for you today, unless you're interested in some Chris Capuano/Tom Haudricourt Fan Fiction.

by Kyle Lobner on Dec 7, 2009 1:38 PM CST up reply actions

And Corey Patterson

Still remains on the 40 man. I assume that’s a red badge of courage for DM.

by SgtClueLs on Dec 7, 2009 2:18 PM CST up reply actions

Pretty sure he's off

I know he filed for free agency.

That's all I've got for you today, unless you're interested in some Chris Capuano/Tom Haudricourt Fan Fiction.

FWIW

He played seven positions in AAA last year. Everything but pitcher and catcher.

by Kyle Lobner on Dec 7, 2009 1:38 PM CST reply actions

Be fair

Even Doug wouldn’t slot him in as high as #3 starter. Definitely more of a #5 with a chance to move up to #4 status with a solid year.

by ecocd on Dec 7, 2009 2:21 PM CST up reply actions

He's had 125 good at bats in AAA last year

That’s really it. But he hit .325 with an OPS of .830 in those AB.

Of course, his numbers were much worse over more at bats in AA that very same year…..

His defense at SS looks pretty good.

I like his 2007 stint in AAA

Only 26 hits in 155 AB, but 16 of them went for extra bases.

Beating a dead horse

I don’t see the connection to Texas. How did Doug find out about this guy?

by ecocd on Dec 7, 2009 2:23 PM CST reply actions

Isn't it obvious?

Look here. Scroll to 8/28.

That’s probably enough to warrant an invitation to big league camp.

Where is the internal option?

I don’t get this. The front office must think a lot of our young players are not ready to produce in the bigs, which I am fine with. But why sign someone who probably is equivalent to their talent level? I just don’t like putting up the roadblocks for our farm system players. I would rather look internally than sign someone of possibly equal stature outside the organization. This just smells like spending just to spend.

Huntsville had a mix of career minor leaguer shortstops last year

After Escobar, there isn’t really a shortstop to block, unless you think Brent Brewer is going to figure anything out.

by TheJay on Dec 7, 2009 5:25 PM CST up reply actions

The next shortstop prospect in the system is probably Josh Prince, at this point

And he might repeat Wisconsin in 2010. So I don’t think Cruz is stealing anyone’s PAs at this point.

And as for “spending just to spend,” he’ll either make the league minimum in the majors or next to nothing in the minors.

That's all I've got for you today, unless you're interested in some Chris Capuano/Tom Haudricourt Fan Fiction.

by Kyle Lobner on Dec 7, 2009 5:30 PM CST up reply actions

I see what you are saying.

But I would rather our horrible internal option get the opportunity than paying extra for some other teams horrible option.

Or are you thinking this guy will be the super-sub

that Counsell was last year?

Those are some long odds, I’d say, however.

No.

I don’t think this guy will be remotely close to that. When I am talking close, I am talking about the Sun to the planet formerly known as Pluto close.

Cruz has one option left.

There’s some value for you. :sarcasm:

Well hopefully he will be better

than the last infielder call Cruz that played for the Brewers
