Rumorville: Randy Wolf

There's a lot of Randy Wolf chatter on Twitter tonight.

*Trenni says she's hearing about the signing from credible sources and that Wolf's a class guy

*This guy thinks three years for Wolf was bad for the Yankees, but is a good deal for the Crew.

*This tweet says a three way deal for Wolf between the #Dbacks #Yanks and #Tigers was vetoed.

*Signing Wolf until he's 35 is betting on luck, says this guy, pointing out Wolf's 2009 BAPIP was .256

There are quite a few comparisons to the Suppan deal and how that seemed good at the time as well as plenty of questions about whether Wolf's 2008 stats or 2009 stats are more indicative of his ability.

Tom H. posted earlier that he's hearing that it will take a three-year deal to get it done and everything I've read has said the same. Sounds like the three-year, $27 million rumor that was circling isn't too far off. He also points out that Wolf is a "West-Coast guy" and therefore it's going to cost the Brewers even more to bring him to Milwaukee.

Just thought of a possible/additional bonus to this signing

Could he be a mentor for Manny Parra? Manny hasn’t had a veteran LHP around and clearly he needs help getting his head straight.

Supposedly that was a large attraction of Zaun (aside from the price tag) – maybe the same thought process is being used here.

no idea

I just report the stuff, I don’t try to make sense of it

I think there were two rumors

that got combined into one tweet. There was talk of a Yankees/Tigers/D-Backs swap including Granderson, Jackson, Scherzer and prospects.

Tommy is a funny dude

When I’d mentioned on a comment on his blog that a poster on CBS forums who seemed to have inside info prior to the Braun deal said he was hearing the Brewers were going to sign Wolf to a 3/27, Tom scoffed and poo-poo’d it right away.

Now, Tom’s saying he has a feeling its going to get done. Huh.

When someone who would know was asked if it were possible that the Brewers gave Wolf a three-year, $27 million deal as rumored by a couple of posters, he replied, “Sure, if you believe in Santa Claus.”

It’s looking good, Virginia.

Meh

He’s pretty full of himself.

It would be funny if it actually happened.

So, should we sign Wolf for 9 mill a year

Would that be using up most of our saved money? I like Wolf, but not sure I like him that much.

I'm iwth the luck guy

For his age, and his luck last year in a pitchers park, to go from there to Miller Park is just askign for trouble.

I know they need pitching, but to spend that much on that guy is a mistake. They already seem to be mailing it in for next year, why not save some of that money they plan on using on 2nd rate free agents and put it somewhere worthwhile?

If they somehow lose out on him (the best of a bad bunch (apart from Lackey)) they should really start seriously considering a Fielder trade to get maximum value for him while they have the chance.

by backtocali on Dec 8, 2009 9:11 AM CST reply actions

I'm with this guy

3 yrs for Wolf will be a disaster. Wolf a mentor?? The guy’s clubhouse cancer. If you want a mentor sign Smoltz. If you want a league-average pitcher you shoulda picked up Looper’s option for 1yr/6M. If you want genuine improvement start working the dang phones and patiently work to get a good deal done.

by balldeagle on Dec 8, 2009 9:40 AM CST up reply actions

Disaster seems like an overreaction to me.

It’s overspending. Clearly. But just because he was lucky does not mean he was a bad pitcher. Wolf is a solid pitcher. Even if they’re paying him more than he’s worth, this won’t turn out to be another Suppan signing because we’ll actually get production out of Wolf.

by tcyoung on Dec 8, 2009 9:44 AM CST up reply actions

I'm not denying

that Wolf’s a better pitcher than Suppan. But we signed Suppan to be a league-average innings eater. In the last 3 years we’ve got 545 IP with ERA+ of 96, 85, and 76. We’re pretty much unanimous calling Suppan’s contract a disaster. I’m willing to bet Wolf’s will be one too.

by balldeagle on Dec 8, 2009 9:52 AM CST up reply actions

I forgot to mention

that since 2003 Wolf’s had only 1 year with >140 IP with an ERA+ >100. That was last year at age 32. Do not give this guy big$$.

by balldeagle on Dec 8, 2009 9:58 AM CST up reply actions

I'm not getting your logic here

What makes you think his contract will be a disaster? It sounds like your saying that Wolf will automatically implode just because he comes to the Brewers. I don’t think he will repeat his performance from last year, but he’s still an improvement over our entire rotation (outside of Yo).

I dont think it would be disastrous

But its definitely not a good idea, imo. I dont think he would be as bad as Suppan, but in another thread I hypothesized that he would be a lot like Looper was.

I just think that the money should go towards different things, long term solutions, not a short term fix that really wont get the team to the promised land, much less improved.

by backtocali on Dec 8, 2009 10:31 AM CST up reply actions

I've been in favor of signing Wolf

3 yrs/27 mil is too much, but at least its a small step in the right direction, compared to the Suppan signing.

Reverse Suppan

Any chance they front-load this deal if it happens? They’re still going to need pitching next year, and the FA pool is better. It would seem that it would be nicer to have more flexibility in the coming years rather than try to save money now when there’s not as much to spend it on (except for more mediocre pitching, maybe signing Fielder, or a mid-season deal). Then either Wolf sucks at 35, but isn’t making as much, or he’s solid and we just have a good starting pitcher.

by TheRemeteeManatee on Dec 8, 2009 10:30 AM CST reply actions

I'd guess the opposite

They’ll have Suppan and Hall coming off the books next year so I’d guess they backload it so they can add another piece (Davis?) this season on a shorter deal.

DM seems to be a backloader kind of guy

(TWSS)

But I would want this deal to be pretty constant throughout. Then again, with more money coming off the books, and the idea of creating more money to spend now, it’ll probably be backloaded.

A Sheep in Wolf's clothing?

While I like Wolf at a price, three years and $27m, which is being reported is a terrible deal. Better to sign Doug Davis at 2 years and $12m. I could see 2 years at $14m with a third year vesting if he say threw 350 innings the first two years combined.

We have to remember Wolf’s injury history and that he pitched in THE BEST pitcher’s ballpark in the majors last year. If the Brewers really do 3 years at $27m they are taking a huge gamble on a guy who at best is a number 3 starter.

3 yrs/ $31M

ugh. MLBTR via TH says the Brewer offer was 3 years, $31 million. ugh. we can trade cursing JS for cursing RW at that amount.

by Capt Science on Dec 8, 2009 2:55 PM CST reply actions

Too much money

But really, what were the other options to get pitching now in that price range? He’s probably the best of them. The other option was to go with the spaghetti approach and just sign two injury prone pitchers for the same price.

Update
@SI_JonHeyman #mets efforts for randy wolf appear fruitless. looks like it’s #brewers for 3 yrs, about $9 mil per.

Hot Stove Report on MLB Network

They make it sound like it’s basically between the Mets and Brewers, but the Mets aren’t willing to go more than 2 years. They also stated that it sounds like it is going to be 3 years at about $10M per….

Excellent news

TH corrects himself, the offer was 3/$27 million.

As to why it took the Brewers reporter almost a day to get the figure right when it had already been reported acurately elsewhere, that’s a question for another thread…
