I don't know why I like this.
Now Melvin can say he signed the second best starter out there or something, though considering Harden, that may not even be true.
All and all, it’s a major improvement, and we overpaid for it, probably, seeing that he’s never been worth that much in his career before last year. But I still feel a bit better about things.
I actually would really like to sign Piniero. There hasn’t been much talk, but he’s clearly a different pitcher after adding that splitter. How much would he cost?

It will be interesting to see who they pursue now
They made a point that the Crew needs 2 pitchers this offseason. At $9-10M a season, I think this signing will prevent them from signing any other free agents for more than maybe $5M a season and there aren’t a whole lot of worthwhile options at that price. I’m betting they are now going to look to the trade front for that 2nd pitcher.

Harden is willing to do an incentive laden deal. Maybe Duchsch or Bedard, or even Sheets would be willing to do the same.

Depends on the pitchers
If you can get two high risk, high reward guys for the $7.5 I’d go that route. However, if you are getting two average, run of the mill pitchers for that $7.5, I’d rather go the first route. Truth be told though, I think I would go neither. I would go for a guy worth $8-10 and then go get a guy that has the potential to be a similar value through trade, but isn’t going to cost you as much salary. Something along the lines of Hart for Maine, etc.
The problem with this scenario just happens to be that you expect to get a $10 value out of the guy you just signed for $10/yr. If you are really getting a $7.5 value out of him the strategy is shot, because you end up doing the 10/5 scenario, but you are only getting 7.5/5 value, essentially getting the worst of both worlds.

Wish we had more terms
I’d like to know what the Buyout is, what the option year is, and if it’s back loaded. I’m going to guess we pay him $12m for his 3rd year, $11m for his 2nd just to try to make this years roster more affordable.
This means when Wolf regresses in the 3rd, he’ll once again be to expensive to move. Like Suppan.

The Suppan/Hall contracts are going to burn us long after they are gone
I see this viscous cycle forming were because of the money on the books now from those contracts we need to backload new contracts. Then as Sgt pointed out, in three years this new contract could very well put us in a very similar position to the one we are in now. All it will take is one misguided offer to McGehee and we have the possibility of being right there.

I agree about the Braun contract
Hopefully we will still be getting at least a marginal decent return out of it though.
I never did get that about contracts. Are there any examples of front-loading contracts? With a guy were you are taking some risk on, why not front load the shit out of it. Either he declines in production at which point it is easier to trade b/c of a more reasonable back-ended contract; or he remains productive at which point you can either get more in a trade b/c of the deal of a contract or you have more money to put better pieces around him to have a better team.

Which also works great in theory… It’s always easier to spend the money you think you will have than to spend the money you actually do have.
I’m not saying it would work, but I would love to see someone try it. I’m sure you could get players on board, just tell them by frontloading now they will get more money upfront and then if they continue to play well, they could always renegotiate a contact to make even more money in the latter half of the contract.

Updated Payroll Estimation
I’m assuming that the deal is for $9MM this year.
I’ve adjusted Bush’s salary to $4.5MM, as I think that appears more likely than the $5.5 that I originally guessed. If he’s going to cost more than 4.5, I think they’ll just non-tender him.
I’ve also eliminated Difelice from the list, under the assumption that he will be released from the major league club.
This puts us at roughly $79MM.
If McClung is non-tendered, we’re around $77M, needing to bring in a couple bench warmers and a bullpen arm or 2 (preferably 1 with a SP).
I think we still have the money to spend on another SP. Even if Mark isn’t willing to raise the payroll, we could still nontender Bush or trade hart to open up some payroll.

Understand your reasoning here
If nothing else for the simple fact that with the offense of the Crew, one more decent pitcher quite possibly could mean p-offs. So if that helps you get a guy who values a shot at a title as much or more than the biggest possible contract, we’re in luck.
To play devil’s advocate though, it is also possible an agent could use the argument that you need to pay my guy more because we know that having him on your team could be the piece you need to reach the postseason. Therefore, you should value him as such.
