Spring Training - Here I Come!

Hey Dudes,

I will be driving to AZ to be there for the Brewers workout tomorrow morning. This will be my 4th year going down there; and I am very excited to see all the players; and hang out with some great friends I am meeting up with in AZ.

I plan to take a bunch of pictures and upload them to my  flickr account as they accumulate. Hopefully my blog will be exciting enough for a front page bump (hint hint). ha!

As you probably know; the Dodgers are in AZ for the first time; and since they are my 2nd favorite team, I am excited to see them workout as well.

Go Brewers!

Best of Luck

Are you bringing your Estrada jersey?

Amazing

I just decided to go today and make the trip for the first weekend in March… see the Brew Crew play the Cubs should be fun for my first spring training experience

I will try to take some pictures and post theml… won’t be as good as the ones from Jamie most likely, but I will give them a try

The designated hitter rule is like letting someone else take Wilt Chamberlain's free throws.

Good work, intrepid BCB reporter

I’ll take your report (and grammar) over Witrado’s any day. Be sure to see how Prince looks (weight-wise, of course). Tell Seth we all say hi.

I’m totally jealous. My GF has gone for the past 2, but not this year. We are planing on going next though.

Getting any new autos?

Jamie!

I got a letter from Ithaca College today (one of 11 letters, it’s getting ridiculous). I couldn’t figure out why I knew the name specifically, and then I remembered why.

I plan to lead off and play short for the Wisconsin Badgers baseball team.

No, seriously, I have a pretty good academic profile and all the tests and other school-required things you sign up for online require a home address— and colleges take advantage of non-profit free mail to send a lot of letters urging you to consider them. I guess you could consider it being recruited :).

Wisconsin does have a club team, you know ...

I remember the same thing — with the letters — happening back in the day. The most aggressive schools were often ones I previously didn’t know existed. (One of them, I recall, was Beaver College.) The best schools played much harder to get. Good luck to you in the search …

by MooseHaas on Feb 18, 2009 10:32 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

thanks

I haven’t actually played baseball since like grade school, actually— I was more of a basketballer. Problem is you can’t actually analyze too much about football and basketball because everything is team-dependent.

I get some of the most random mail, though. A 60 page magazine from “Robert Cook Honors College” all the way to a letter from Fox Valley Tech. I wouldn’t have known Ithaca if I hadn’t read Jamie’s profile a while back :).

oh, those were the days

I got a very high SAT score, which ensured I got mail from every four-year college in the country. I remember one week when all of those Minnesota schools (Macalester, St Olaf, etc.) sent me their glossy brochures all at once … those college kids sure seem to like playing frisbee on the quad in their Gap sweaters.

So I went to NYU. No quad, no frisbees in sight, and we made fun of people who wore Gap.

Also, cheese.

those WERE the days!

I only took the ACT, so I didnt’ get a whole lot of letters from the coast, but for some reason USC kept sending me crap. I did NOT want to go to school in downtown LA

It's actually SOUTH of downtown LA

That’s a worse neighborhood….

USC's mailer

I remember getting USC’s mailer - it had a cartoon recruitment table, with three USC students sitting at it, plus examples of the various activities you can get into at USC resting on the table (sports trophy, textbooks, etc.).

One of the three students was a blonde cartoon girl smiling - and if you looked closely (and I did), you can see that under the table, she’s lifting up her dress. Shameless.

I had no idea that was an option.

Not that I actually would have spent four years in the service to avoid taking the ACT … but it’s interesting loophole.

It’s possible that I could not get in with a 30

I think this incoming class across the country is a lot bigger than normal.

So it’s going to be slightly tougher getting into some schools. I’m on the waiting list at Madison with a 32. Got into La Crosse, though, so I bet if you applied there, you could get in.

That sucks

I’m only a junior now, so I’ll be applying this fall. We’ll see how everything works out.

And I can take another ACT

took the last one with only two high school math credits, I guessed on half of the problems.

I would say there's some room for improvement

would it help your study habits if I took down the spray charts? :)

Also, cheese.

by Jeff Sackmann on Feb 19, 2009 3:40 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

To both

I had 32 English, 31 reading, 31 science, 27 math. (<—-outlier)

I will adblock image the spray charts if it comes to that.

I’m visiting Madison next month, and I’ll be looking closely at Minnesota Twin-Cities and a variety of others, though Wisconsin and Minnesota have the advantage of $$.

I also have a 3.95 and about 4.2 indexed and top 7% in rank with several college credit classes, though I suffer in the extracurricular activities department— I don’t see the point in joining random high school organizations that waste time with meetings on Wednesdays, and golf is my only actual high school sport.

I’m actually planning to be a journalism major, which unfortunately rules out LaCrosse (a campus I really like). I’m sure that brings about a bunch of images of some nerdy kid that launched a plan to infiltrate BrewCrewBall to advance his sports journalism career agenda, when the opposite is the case— I’m just the cool kid that signed up to post an occasional sarcastic comment or pun, and wound up applying some writing skills to analyzing stuff here because baseball actually holds my interest. I was involved in a group in middle school that ran and wrote a small newsletter that had some popularity (and made us some money) in our area here, so that’s how I got involved with the journalism concept. I have no grand plan to be a Brewer beat writer or something like that, I haven’t even determined if I actually want to use a journalism degree to write stuff— it’s just a nice mix of writing and social sciences, and I dominate the social studies department. Newspapers will be extinct by the time I graduate college, probably, but I’m banking that a journalism degree will have some new applications by then.

About math— I took the ACT in September and started our Math III (Algebra II for most schools) at the start of this semester. I didn’t even know what a function equation was when I took it, or how to factor a standard quadratic model.
