Macha: "Gallardo Won't Be #1"
Well Alright. Makes sense. But its sad to think of Braden Looper as #1. Or Dave Bush. Or Manny Parra. I think we all agree that Jeff Suppan won't be there.

That's the starting rotation, isn't it
Every day, I’m closer and closer to subscribing to Setanta and following rugby.

I don't know
I’ve seen guys get their ears ripped off in rugby. That’s gross.
And what do guys do when something’s broken? Put duct tape on it. That’s right. On their heads, around their ears. That way, they don’t get ripped off. Brilliant!

So Marty are you an All Blacks fan or a Springbocks fan
I happen to think the All Blacks Haka war dance is one of the coolest pregame routines in all of sports

That's awesome
Until I actually get a sports package that lets me follow rugby, that will be my favorite team.
Those guys are hardcore. I can’t hardly appreciate hits in the NFL any more after watching rugby.

I first saw the All Blacks on a trip to NZ in 2001...
…. and while I still love the NFL, I haven’t really thought about it in the same way since.

The allblacks
Recruit from surrounding islands like the yankees. And, like the yankees they start every world cup as massive favourites without ever winning.
And the boks have that uncomfortable history of intolerance like the redsox.
Both poor choices. The wallabies on the other hand…

The All Blacks are always fun to watch.

Setanta rugby is lame though.
Most of the time it is horrendous northern hemisphere stuff.
at foxsports.com.au you can watch Super 14 over the net. (Australian, NZ and SA teams).
Much better.

And if I wanted to watch fat english guys getting in to fights
I’d just go to any pub in Bondi.

"horrendous northern hemisphere stuff"
Are we still talking about rugby?

Barely
When played by the English it is rugby-like.

This is why I love the Internet
There’s always someone out there that knows more about something you’re just picking up.
Do you subscribe to the video streaming? The main page says it’s Australia-only, but the demo stream works fine from the US. As a matter of fact, they’re pretty clear about it in the FAQ:
Is this available all over the world? What countries can I watch from?
FOX SPORTS Running Rugby On Demand is available ONLY IN AUSTRALIA.
by Marty McSuperFly on Feb 18, 2009 7:06 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Damn
Last year it was only available outside of australia.
Now, if you are outside Australia you can go through:
http://www.rugbyzone.com/
This should do the trick.
All tri-nations tests (Australia – South Africa – NZ series).
All super 14 games (best provincial rugby in the world).
Hope this works!

Let’s go ahead and name him the #4 right now so I can stop trying to force myself to be excited about Braden Looper pitching the home opener.

This should bode well for Yovanni
it means he gets lesser matchups right out of the gate. More W for him. As for the overall effect on the crew… Love that off-season…
/buries head in disgust.
I just sit back and root for the taser
by Hyatt on Feb 17, 2009 1:22 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
This will do nothing but good things.
YoGa gets easier matches, and pitchers with high run support numbers will go against the other teams aces, instantly improving our offense.
Wait.
Note: zero research went into this post.

Dont know if it will make much of a difference at all
Maybe just slightly keeps his innings down… as in 6-7 less over the course of the season, if he stays healthy, he is still getting 30 starts…

why not sup???
i see what macha is doing here. Instead of putting your best pitcher at #1, put your worst. This will totally mess up other teams. So when our “#1” faces off against say Zambrano or Lincecum maybe they will be like “Oh hell, it’s only Sup!!! I’ll go easy on them today then….maybe even walk a couple of batters. Yeah, ‘Carlos the Merciful’, I like the way that sounds!!!”
Crisis averted…..oh who am i kidding…..i just gave myself a headache with that logic
"She might have been the one that got away.....who am I kidding? They all got away!"

Sounds like an old baseball adage
It’ll be tough to beat those guys no matter the matchup, so save your best pitchers for other days.

Although that doesn't really apply
to, say, the Giants. Or the Padres. Or the Pirates. Or Etc.
by Charlie Marlow on Feb 17, 2009 4:27 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I think the Giants might be ok this year
There are not too many good pitching match ups against them, except when Zito is starting.
by Saltire on Feb 17, 2009 4:52 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
sort of the Diamondbacks strat?
Just throw out a ton of good pitchers, and hope you can score 2 runs while holding the other team to 1?
by Charlie Marlow on Feb 17, 2009 5:03 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Assuming they dont sign Manny
Yeah something like that, although the Giants Park is alot harder score alot of runs in compared to the D’Back’s.
If they sign Manny then the actually might become close to favourite for the West this year. Mainly down to the fact that the rest of the West is pretty poor especially the Padres and Rockies

Gagne back?
I don’t have a link yet so I don’t know where to post this, but I’ve heard that the Brewers have signed Gagne to a minor league deal with an invitation to major league camp.
by Supertramp on Feb 17, 2009 3:19 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
minor league deal?
I am fine with that… he played well in the second half…
If Jason Izzy, Chad Cordero or Gagne are added to the major league roster at some point, wouldnt be opposed…
bullpen might be a strength this year

I'm not seeing the point of this
Macha says he doesn’t want him to have to worry about throwing a shutout every time when he faces Zambrano, Lincecum, etc, but how often have we heard that Yo has as much poise and confidence as Braun. I don’t think he’s worried about the competition.

My opinion...
is that they’re concerned about Gallardo’s IP totals. While you can conceivably get to 200 IP from any rotation spot, its significantly more likely as the 1st pitcher in the rotation.
I, personally, shudder to think of Gallardo pitching more than 185 innings this season.
by Charlie Marlow on Feb 17, 2009 4:22 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Macha also correctly pointed out that rotations get jumbled anyway through off-days and rainouts
I don’t think there’s a ton of #1 vs #1 matchups after mid-April. At least no more than there are #1 vs. #2 or #1 vs. #3 matchups.

Wow
I hope that tomorrow’s headline involves Villy becoming a starter. Since the Mustache seems to be signing a new reliever every day we won’t miss him in the pen.
