Gagne Is Back
At least it's a low risk minor league deal.

TH is pissed
Doug didn’t warn him this was coming. I suspect there will be a hissy fit, and hurt feelings.

Nice to see you Marty.
You're not a sexist, violent, porn-peddling racist. Congratulations. I'm sure your Nobel Prize is in the mail.

Funny that TH is pissed
hard to ever get upset about a minor league deal. Decent depth for AAA if it comes to that.
Scored three times and detonated an indisputable in four visits to the batting box.
Meh.
Regardless of the cost, I could have done without this deal.
He’s not the worst pitcher ever, just the worst good pitcher.
It’s been awhile since the idiot JS commenter have totally imploded, this should help. Wait, no it hasn’t.
We don’t lose anyone off the 40-man with this deal, do we? Not the most informed guy when it comes to how the rosters work.
No
Minor league deals don’t impact the 40-man roster until the player is called up.

So since we had to DFA Pena to get Green, that means Green is on a major league deal, right?
I’m perceptive today.
In short, yes
Green was on the Angels’ 40-man roster. He was DFA’d and placed on waivers. The Brewers claimed him, meaning they had to put him on their 40-man roster. To free up a spot, Pena was sent packing. There’s more info on the 40-man roster and how different transactions affect it here.

I'm down with the deal
Melvin made some good points. I find interesting gagne apologized for last years performance, Kind of a classy move and I would love to see him turn things around.

If we sign Isringhausen and Izzy+Gagne make the team
we could be in the running for some kind of record — career saves in a single bullpen.
Also, cheese.
And/or guys with 100+ for their career
Looper’s at 103 and Julio is at 99. Might as well sign Chad Cordero (128), too.
Obscure baseball records and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.
oh wow
I didn’t realize Julio had that many, and I had completely forgotten that Looper was a closer. That’s crazy.
Also, cheese.

This doesn’t to have much negative impact. I’m kind of surprised that Gagne is willing to comeback after the way fans treated him last year though.
We've got uniforms and everything, it's really great!
It may come as a surprise
that I believe some baseball players (and sports players in general) realize that it is the entertainment of the fans that makes the game go ’round. Without ticket sales, merchandise sales, TV contracts and viewership huge contracts and a financially feasible business model are simply not possible.
I think Eric Gagne gets it, and doesn’t take things as personally as some southern boys on the team. Then again, Gagne admitted he was terrible, removed himself from the closer position during the season, then apologized to The Mustache for his poor performance. Corey Hart simply stated that he wouldn’t adjust his non-working plate approach, and condemned the fans for having the gall to boo an under-performing player (Hall, IIRC), who was marched out day after day by an under-performing manager.
But, that’s just my take :)

Bullpen battle the most intiguing of camp
Hoffman and Villanueva are McClung are locks for the pen. The last 4 spots are up for grab with a lot of competitors. This should be the most interesting battle of spring training.
I like:
Julio
Riske
Stetter
Morlan
I think there is a pretty good chance that R.J. Swindle, Dillard, DeFelice and maybe Todd Coffey can be stashed in the minors along with Chase Wright, Nick Green and a rehabing Chris Capuano for when they are needed. Gagne and probably Coffey will hit the road.
I can't help but agree
I just don’t see Gagne making the team. If so, then I’d say look for Julio to not make the cut. I honestly think the Brewers are going to keep Morlan on the team. Unless they can work out a minor league trade for him so they can stash him in AAA.

Worse case scenario
If Gagne pitches well enough, but there is not room for him in the Bigs I would think we could get a low level prospect for him.

Alas, no.
the contract almost certainly says if he’s not on the team, he can ask for his release. So if there’s not room for him, he’ll certainly go somewhere else, but we won’t get anything out of the deal.
Also, cheese.
by Jeff Sackmann on Feb 17, 2009 7:25 PM CST up reply actions
So...
We could add him to the team and then trade him right away maybe? I’m guessing not, but it can’t hurt to try can it.

there's a loophole I don't understand
but you can’t trade free agents until six months after they sign, or June 15, or something. It keeps coming up in the discussions of MLB bending the rules for guys like Juan Cruz who aren’t getting signed because they are type A and no one wants to give up the pick.
Also, cheese.

Article XX(B)(6) of the CBA
(a) Any Club signing a contract after the expiration of the election period with a Player under this Section B may not assign his contract until after the next June 15. However, notwithstanding the foregoing, such contract may be assigned for other Player contracts and/or cash consideration of $50,000 or less prior to the next June 16 if the Player gives written consent to such transaction.
So yeah, all free agents have a CBA granted no-trade clause until June 15 after they sign.
Obscure baseball records and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.
They can waive the clause though...
There’s an article today about it on mlb.com: http://milwaukee.brewers.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20090218&content_id=3843216&vkey=news_mlb&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb

eh, whatever
i want to believe in gagne, and if TH is pissed, tough. i could care less.
I still won’t be content with the bullpen until Ricky “Wild Thing” Vaughn is the closer.
"....si si Peeeeedro"
Why do people think Morlan’s going to be on the team? just because he was a Rule 5 pick? Statistically, he’s below every other candidate, and, oh yeah, is a AA pitcher.
I'm not among the convinced, but...
the Brewers wouldn’t have picked him if they didn’t think he had the stuff to compete at the mlb level. Plus, if it comes to a “tie” (which I know isn’t really realistic, but let’s say) between him and Gagne or whomever, he has the edge, since if we keep him and he pans out, we have three years of pre-arb pitching from him.
Also, cheese.
by Jeff Sackmann on Feb 17, 2009 7:24 PM CST up reply actions
I could look into this, but I’m not going to. Maybe tomorrow.
When was the Rule 5 draft? Was it before we picked up Hoffman, Julio, Looper, etc?
Maybe we didn’t think we’d be able to get decent pitching/bullpen help, so we did what we could at the time…
Does anyone know the last team that made the playoffs carrying a rule 5 draft guy the whole year?
Before Hoffman/Looper, yes.
Julio, I don’t think so.
Not a playoff team, but Brian Barton stuck with the Cards last year.
Red Sox kept Adam Stern in ’05, but there were some DL shenanigans there. And the previous year the Red Sox kept Lenny DiNardo around.
Also, cheese.

Last Rule 5 Draftee on a Playoff Team
Kevin Cameron with San Diego came within a playoff game of making it in 2007. I believe the last one to stay in the bigs all season was Glen Barker with the Astros in 1999.

i've never watched it, obviously have heard good things
and when i found out that fringe is written by the same people that got me even more interested. one of these days i’ll get around to watching it
I untuck my shirt!
I stopped watching Fringe after eight episodes. It’s not even near the class of a show that LOST is.
With that said, LOST is a commitment. It’s serial and the episodes aren’t linear. Don’t believe the ‘they never answer anything’ or ‘making it up as they go along’. It’s going to be a 120-episode show; the rate of answers flow as you would expect for something like that.
I really want to start watching this show
I have for the last year or two, but I don’t think I’d be able to keep up with it. It seems like something ridiculous happens every season. I would be completely lost….
Something ridiculous does happen every season. But it works. In the LOST universe, it’s totally believable. If you can buy into the LOST universe, it’s all good.
Plus, it gave us a fat man throwing a hot pocket at someone.
Yes. This is a must. Given the choice of starting LOST not at the beginning versus making love to a toaster, pick the toaster.
Is this toaster on or off?

speaking of toasters
I strongly recommend reheating cold pizza in the toaster. As opposed to the microwave or the oven. It’s incredible how well it works.
I would say
That variable is a highly influential one….hypothetically speaking of course.

Not a bad move
I actually kind of like Gagne when he isn’t making $10 million, and as I recall he was close to signing a major league deal with the Twins a while back. If it doesn’t pan out, no harm done, but if he can actually start to put things together well enough to make the team then it’s a great low cost pickup.
(Alternatively, we can have the Brewers scientists spend $10 million researching an undetectable form of steroids and have ourselves one of the greatest closers in MLB history again!)
Ryan Braun: He loves it.
I like the move
as said it’s a low cost move and he was pitching much better at the end of the season. hopefully he can carry that over to this year
I untuck my shirt!
