Pitchers announced for tomorrow's intrasquad game.
From the JS Blog:
In the intrasquad game tomorrow, Braden Looper, Mark DiFelice, Sam Narron and Omar Aguilar are scheduled to pitch for one side, with Chase Wright, Tim Dillard, Chris Narveson and R.J. Swindle on the other team. Macha said the Brewers probably would only play five innings or so, letting everyone get at least one at-bat.
Also, Macha has lined up his starters so Jeff Suppan can be #1. Please no.

Interesting strategy?
and he emphasized this does not mean they will line up this way for the season
I sure hope that’s the case. What possible, conceivable notion could cause him to even consider Suppan at #1? That would make him the worst #1 in the majors, yes?
Macha already said he doesn’t want to put the weight of being the No. 1 starter on Gallardo just yet,
To be honest, I’d rather have Dave Bush at #1 if he won’t put Gallardo there. He at least has the potential to pitch lights out.
I don’t like his marginalizing of Kendall at all, either. Let’s hope he displays more effectiveness than just using his LOOGYs appropriately.

I don’t like his marginalizing of Kendall at all, either.
I don’t know if I’d call dropping his starts from 151 to 145 ‘marginalizing’.
Kendall could use some time off, and Mike Rivera was a more than capable backup last season.

I don't think playing time is the issue.
But changing the way Kendall manages the defense is.
He’s not the worst pitcher ever, just the worst good pitcher.

Kendall was not really known for defense
So, yeah, he threw out a lot of guys last year, but it’s a little much for him to complain about the manager wanting to manage those situations from the dugout. Maybe Kendall can spend some more thought cycles on helping Suppan get the ball down, and fewer on whether he thinks Brandon Phillips is going to run.

I've got a post for tomorrow on Kendall
Because we’ve been talking about him a lot lately, but indirectly. I’m curious to hear the full conversation.

You know where I'll come in on this one
Pretty much not on your side on that one.
I just sit back and root for the taser

I know.
And I’m curious where everyone else sits on that spectrum, hence the post. :-)

As long as he never bats when we are behind in the late innings.
I can live with Kendall.
Oh yeah, and if he shaved that beard. It’s embarrassing to ask every bus stop pervert for his autograph thinking that he just might be Jason Kendall.

I’m willing to trade up to two wins if it means not having to hear about how “Kendall makes all the difference with the way he handles a pitching staff and calls a game” twice an inning every freaking game

Doesn’t really matter where the starters stack up unless they skip starts. Then it only matters who is the #5 and gets his starts skipped. This is only spring training. I will wait to make a judgment call until the season starts.
Give him an offspeed pitch down and in. He will swing and miss.

i agree
after a couple of weeks, these things get screwed up anyway… and it may actually work in our favor starting out: concede the opener with Suppan and try to win the series with Gallardo and Parra in games 2 and 3 :)
That being said, Suppan should be our 5th starter, so that is unfortunate.
by keephopealive on Feb 23, 2009 10:55 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
That's exactly it
I believe the rotation could be set such that the #5 starter could have as few as 2 starts throughout April without #1-4 going on short rest. It’s hard to say how it would sit with any “starting pitcher” that sees fewer innings than a long-relief pitcher in a month, but I see Suppan as the worst starter in the rotation and the fewer appearances he has, the better, in my opinion.

You can't win 34 games
without a lot of starts. Go Suppan!

He's gonna earn it
That Suppan v. Lincecum opener doesn’t look very promising.

If that's the starting rotation at the beginning of the season,
We would face the Cubs with Looper, Bush, Suppan.
Ugh, both Parra and Gallardo would miss the series.

Advanced marketing techniques at work
The Brewers have determined that Miller Park will be full of Cubs fans, and so they’re just setting it up to make the crowd happy.

ahhhhh good point
We’ll give them a false sense of security at the beginning of the year, so that we can take them by surprise in the second half.

aren't there a couple of starters missing?
Where are Wright and McClung getting starter work in? the minor league camp? I detect the potential for unhappy pitchers to be unhappy.

Well, if starters are starting every fifth day.
Then the other guys getting stretched out will probably pitch the 4-6th inning of some/most spring training games.
He’s not the worst pitcher ever, just the worst good pitcher.

that makes sense
that’s right, everyone does start out working 2-3 innings at a time…
(i don’t know why i forget this /every/ year)

Radio?
Is this game broadcasted anywhere? I don’t see it listed on the MLB gameday audio site (Infact I don’t see any of 2009)

Maybe Macha is proposing a new theory
Pitching talent and ability is directly proportional to salary. This new theory would result in Suppan being the best pitcher we have and ultimately our #1 starter.*
*Warning: This theory is in no way a rational or remotely proven theory. With that being said I welcome anything that helps me deal with two more years of the Suppan contract, including the risk of being driven to alcoholism or drug use.
