Game Thread #-36: Brewers (0-0) v. A's (0-0)
Good afternoon and welcome, ladies and gentlemen, to the 2009 Cactus League. It's Jeff Suppan (0-0) vs Josh Outman (0-0) in Maryvale at 2:05. Here's the full A's lineup.
Outman is a 24 year old starter acquired in last season's Joe Blanton trade. He went 1-2 with a 4.56 ERA in 6 outings (4 starts) for Oakland in 2008. He was the Phillies 10th round pick in 2005. Here's an excerpt from Outman's entry in John Sickels' 2009 prospect book:
Josh Outman is the winner of the coveted Coolest Name in Baseball Award in the Pitching Category. He also has an 88-93 mph fastball, a hard slider and a decent changeup.
Sickels rates him as a B- prospect. Jeff Suppan, on the other hand, is Jeff Suppan.
The first game thread of 2009 is now open.

Sweet sweet game threads
How I missed you so. Cubs play at 2:05, do we fly the L flag even in the spring?

any way to keep track of the game online?
Other than the game thread?
(Moved to new spot at work. Just in case the local Brewers Radio Network affiliate bothered to carry ST games—which it didn’t last year—I brought in a radio. 106.3 bzzzzt. 1550 bzzzzt. 1500 is fine, which means I’m listening to the Red Sox and Twins tonight instead.)
It is on Gameday audio from MLB
I think you should get it on WTMJ aswell since it is Uek and Provus that are doing the commentry.
MLB Blackout Rules
I’m pretty sure that they black it out. I’m not 100% sure on ST games, but I think they do.
i've been looking at mlb.tv/audio
and I’m pretty sure there aren’t blackouts for spring training games.
I'm pretty sure they don't
Its not as if the games are a home games for anyone apart from the D’Backs,Rays and Marlins
I'm listening to it on Gameday Audio in Iowa.
You can also watch the Gameday coverage at MLB.com.

I just got a new computer,
and i’m wondering how soon i have to rig it up to get around the blackouts.
I’m gonna get silverlight and play them on my TV in HD. At least the non brewers games.
There were only a few brewers games last year
It seems to me that they were freely available to everyone from brewers.com last year, but I could be mistaken.

FWIW
per TBTSNBN:
You can listen to the game on the radio on WTMJ-AM (620), with new announcer Corey Provus teaming with Bob Uecker. The game starts at 2 p.m. CST.

XM Coverage
For those of us driving who aren’t in the greater Milwaukee area, the game will be on XM 179. Or at least that’s what the display in my car tells me.
The XM in my car stopped working on Sunday, abruptly.
I’m still waiting for a reply from tech support.

Sure he is going to say a lot of dumb things
The sheer volume of things any announcer says means there is going to be a lot of dumb things even if the good things out number the dumb things 10:1.
by dixieflatline on Feb 25, 2009 2:11 PM CST up reply actions
agreed
And I gave him his due and a quality announcer, but the ratio was slipping. I really can’t believe he started to complain about fans booing an opposing pitcher going to first. That’s what fans do when an opposing pitcher throws to first.

I hate when fans boo the opposing pitcher throwing to first. Just because “that’s what they do” doesn’t make it any less stupid.
I hope Povus is good too, everything I’ve read about him seems positive.

It’s just a petty and silly thing for a professional announcer to comment on, and stood out in my mind.

Anyone here have any experience writing .html forms? I am trying to come up with a form where first the user picks a month and then depending on month it will know how many days there are to choose and then once the date is picked it will query a MLB web page to list the games scheduled for that day. Anyone know how to do that?
if the first user choice effects the next available choices
I would probably go with javascript. forms would be fairly clumsy for that, I think — w/o javascript, you’d have to stretch it out over multiple pages.
but if you do do something simple with forms, they are really easy. I could help if you need it, but I’d guess you could figure out the basics from a web tutorial in about 5 minutes.

Discoveries of spring!
1) WEVR isn’t bothering to carry spring training games. Again.
2) But at least that meant I didn’t get to listen to Suppan being awful. Again.
3) Keiichi Yabu still sucks. (I got to watch about 5 minutes of the SF-Cleveland game, just in time for DeRosa’s HR.)
