Game Thread #-34: Brewers (0-1-1) at A's (0-1-1)
Sorry I missed the Mug this morning - technical difficulties. Internet was out when I got up and didn't come back until after 10:30.
I hope everyone is taking this opportunity to get into shape for the regular season. Yesterday's game, for example, gave me my first opportunity to delete a troll. (Thanks for stopping by, Cubs fans!)
Today, it's Manny Parra (NR) taking on former Brewer farmhand Dana Eveland (NR) for the A's. Game time is at 2:05 at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.
Let's get a win today!

Let's do this
My first game thread of the season at work, always a good time.
BCB, the preferred above replacement level sarcasm supplier.
Indeed.... It is on the radio as I recall
So will enjoy have one earpiece in listening while working!
The designated hitter rule is like letting someone else take Wilt Chamberlain's free throws.
I think I need to start using the preview button as long as you can't edit!
My grammar is far worse than any jsonline reporter
The designated hitter rule is like letting someone else take Wilt Chamberlain's free throws.
Yahoo! note
The game threads do not appear on the Yahoo! Brewers page.

Yeah, only stories we submit for distribution show up on the Yahoo page
But once the regular season starts, our game threads are supposed to show up as part of Yahoo’s live box score page.

Gagne, I think
"I will agree that the attitude [at BCB] is ridiculous and they have done so much to instigate animosity and then block us from responding. Real mature!"
I was watching the Ken Burns documentary Baseball last night
And they were playing a clip of Sandy Koufax’s perfect game… and if I heard correctly it was Harvey Kuenn who made the last out of the game
According to baseball reference he had a .114 batting average vs Sandy all time…
Good little piece of trivia for you… maybe I should have put it in a form of a question and given out a free Rickie Weeks bobblehead for the correct answer… ohh well
The designated hitter rule is like letting someone else take Wilt Chamberlain's free throws.
and Harvey was
The final out in another one of Sandy’s no-hitters two years earlier in 1963- according some research
The designated hitter rule is like letting someone else take Wilt Chamberlain's free throws.
Also Harvey was
The final out in another one of Sandy’s no-hitters two years earlier in 1963- according some research
The designated hitter rule is like letting someone else take Wilt Chamberlain's free throws.
Is that research being done by the Redundant Research Center for Researching Redundancy?
:-)
"The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous."
oooh
With a Rickie bobblehead, I could start a new shelf at work.

I think
there should be insulting or derogatory bobbleheads. Like Bill Hall at the plate, completing his swing, with the ball past him.
"I will agree that the attitude [at BCB] is ridiculous and they have done so much to instigate animosity and then block us from responding. Real mature!"
My friends and I used to suggest the same thing.....
Our first idea was a “Wes Helms Bobble-Glove Night.” The head wouldn’t bobble, but the glove would bobble violently.
I miss the slide, the balloons, and the giant beer mug. :(
If I worked with you
I would complain to human resources about that display.

Brewers lineup:
1. Jason Kendall C
2. Chris Duffy CF
3. Corey Hart RF
4. Prince Fielder 1B
5. Trot Nixon LF
6. Casey McGehee 3B
7. Craig Counsell 2B
8. Mike Lamb DH
9. Alcides Escobar SS
Mark DiFelice, Chase Wright, Omar Aguilar, R.J. Swindle and Chris Narveson will also pitch.
Also, McCalvy notes that Todd Coffey’s son’s birth has been pushed back a week, so Coffey is still with the team.
"The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous."
And for the A's:
Rajai Davis CF
Travis Buck RF
Matt Holliday LF
Jason Giambi 1B
Jack Cust DH
Kurt Suzuki C
Bobby Crosby SS
Joe Dillon 3B
Cliff Pennington 2B
"The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous."
It's funny
Giambi’s most recent two teams might just be the only teams that would play him a majority of time in the field, rather than at DH.
(Well, ok, I suppose NL teams would probably put him in the field, too.)

Pushed back?
Is it is natural birth or c-section (sp?)

Dana Eveland trade
That trade looks a little worse everyday.
We gave Eveland and Doug Davis for Johnny Estrada, Vargas, and Aquino.
Betweeen Eveland and Jorge De La Rosa, we should implement a rule about giving young lefties a few more years to develop.
Hidden value
Without Aquino, firenedyost.com might never have been born.
by Marty McSuperFly on Feb 27, 2009 1:38 PM CST up reply actions
So who does that apply to today?
Stetter, Swindle and Wright?
The designated hitter rule is like letting someone else take Wilt Chamberlain's free throws.
I was thinking Chase Wright
When we acquired Wright, my thought was that sometimes lefties take a while to develop. I don’t know if any sabremetric type people have verified whether its true.
I think lefties tend to play until they are older
but that might just be because there are more roster spots for LOOGYs than for one-out RHPs. Either way, I’m pretty sure some analytical work has been done.
Also, cheese.

Baseball Prospectus took a look here.
A few quotes:
“…Anyway, nothing magical happens for left-handers when they turn 26, or 27 or 28. Bill James studied the issue and ran a chart including data for every left-handed pitcher born between 1920 and 1939 (The Bill James Baseball Abstract 1983, page 211). The lefties posted a .505 winning percentage from ages 23 through 26, and a .507 winning percentage from ages 27 through 30.”
“Did you ever hear the saying that lefthanders don’t find themselves until age 26? It’s obviously a ‘magic’ theory – there is a magic about turning 26 – but people say it, so there must be people who believe it…on balance, though, there’s nothing to it. Nothing too much happens to left-handed pitchers as a group at age 26. Their wins increase by 17; their losses increase by 13.”
The author did his own studies and determined:
I was hoping I’d have a nugget of wisdom to offer those of you brave enough—or masochistic enough—to slog your way through this mess of a column. Unfortunately, the only thing I can offer you is this: Bill James was right. Maybe a good percentage of left-handers have a breakout season around age 26, but that’s only because a good percentage of all pitchers break out at that age. Yes, there are many examples of left-handers who didn’t reach their full potential until their late 20s, but there are just as many examples of right-handers who took just as long.
hmm
that seems like the wrong way to go about things. (and I did read the article).
the right way seems pretty simple — calculate aging curves (including minor league data) for all pitchers, then break them out by RHP and LHP. I’d be shocked if nobody has done that work, esp. among the guys who do projections. (Like, uh, me … I think my system assumes that LHPs peak a year later, but I don’t know that I had any evidence for setting it up like that.)
Also, cheese.

I'm not ready to bemoan the loss of JDLR yet.
He’s had one nice half season in Colorado, following half a dozen seasons where he had awesome potential and negative results. He seems like the classic guy who needed to bounce around enough to find the right scenery.
"The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous."
i was furious about the JDLR trade.
i was certain he’d have a big 2008, at the time i wrote the rant above I figured he was two years away. i was wrong, he was expendable. he showed very little improvement from ‘07→’08 and probably has peaked as a good lefty out of the bullpen.
i learned my lesson and didn’t complain too much about dana eveland, and downright celebrated will inman’s trade. :)
Bring Back The Old Logo!
I don't know...
most of the ink that has lately been spilled re JDLR has to do with his second half, but even just looking at his entire season as a starter…
A 5.09 ERA doesn’t look very good, of course, but adjusted for Coors, the OPS+ against is about average. CHONE projects him as a full-time starter with a 4.67 ERA, more valuable than (oh, just pulling a name out of a hat here) Braden Looper. I certainly wouldn’t mind having him right now, though of course there might’ve been some pain involved keeping him on the roster this long.
Also, cheese.

Identity crisis
Don’t know if you guys have noticed, but clockwerks at SBNation was kind enough to transfer my username to something more reflective of my actual name, “Jordan M”. I liked using the name “jihad” and I will still use it around other sites on the internets, but in doing front-page posts here and explaining that in real-life— just don’t need/want the trouble of being named after a holy war. I’ll have my alternate identity in my signature and on my profile page, and I’ll leave the avatar the same so your color association will be with me. Most of you probably wouldn’t notice that the name is changed, I know I instantly look at the avatar to see who wrote something.
And like NoahJ, you can just address me as Jordan, not Jordan M. Or jihad if you’re in the habit.
Scored three times and detonated an indisputable in four visits to the batting box.
I always liked your username..
this kinda makes me a little bit sad.

I’m still using it elsewhere. Just got strange to say to people outside of the internets that my user/profile name was “jihad”. People misinterpret that word.
