Game Thread #-33: Angels (3-0) at Brewers (1-1-1)
The Brewers come into Saturday on their longest winning streak of the spring: one game.
Today, they return to Maryvale to host the Angels. Braden Looper makes his first start of the spring for the Crew, taking on Shane Loux of the Angels. Loux is also making his first appearance of the spring. He posted a 2.81 ERA in 7 appearances (no starts) in 2008 for the Angels, and went 12-6 with a 3.98 ERA in 22 starts in AAA Salt Lake City last season. He's entering his 11th professional season.
Game time is at 2:05, and the Game Thread is now open.

By the way
If you read today’s Journal Sentinel, you may be under the impression the Brewers are playing the Dodgers. They’re not. Thanks to Anthony Witrado for the information.
"The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous."
Seriously, how does someone get that wrong?
Especially someone who is paid to cover this one particular team? This is getting ridiculous.

Good god, maybe Tom H told him.
Judging from the end of his last blog.
Was there some sort of schedule change or are the beat reporters told only the City of the team the Brewers are playing?

Maybe they're just really gosh darn excited to play the Dodgers in spring!

Thanks, btw, are due to TheJay, who noticed the mistake before I accidentally posted a Brewers-Dodgers game thread.

Just remember that it's the blogs who lack credability.

I feel bad for Reggie Willits
That guy isn’t going to get to play at all. He walks like a crazy person and plays solid defense. If DM had traded Cameron, I would’ve hoped to get him to play center. I’d still take him as a fourth outfielder and frequent starter if he’s available. The Angels have like 5 outfielders ahead of him.

Hmmmm
That’s the thing: we seem to be putting a lot of faith in Lorenzo Cain being ready next season. I wouldn’t mind a plan B who gets on base and plays good defense.
"I will agree that the attitude [at BCB] is ridiculous and they have done so much to instigate animosity and then block us from responding. Real mature!"
I see we are bringing the thunder at DH today.

Is it possible to have a negative SLG% for the bottom 3?

they are probably
trying to get used to a pitcher hitting 9th.
September 15: Not a bad little Monday
It looks more like they are trying to decide where it would be best to place the pitcher, 7, 8 or 9.

Morlan, Coffey, Julio
Looks like we will get our first look at the battle for the final bullpen spot.

Tony Gwynn, Jr. DH
I realize the situation, but I never thought I’d see that particular sequence of words again after that Red Sox series last year.

Interesting. I wonder if he'll be able to make the team.
Can he play anywhere other than third?

He spent a little time in RF early in his career
Considering he’ll be gone for much of the spring with Team Canada, this is probably like Russell Branyan last season. Won’t break camp with the team but will be available in AAA if needed.
Obscure baseball records and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.
Though I don't think he'll be able to match the Muscle's slugging.
Of about a billion.
How far will this one fly?
He played 25 games in right field in 1999.
But other than that, no.
It’s also important to note he hasn’t played any position since 2006, so if ever there was a time to learn a new position, right now could be it.
My guess it he’s AAA fodder at best at this point…he’ll need some time to get back to major league level.
"The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous."
I don't.
I mean, I hope he has a nice life and all and I’m glad his symptoms are clearing up. But I hope he has a .900 ops in ST and then sucks it up once he makes the team.

Lets say, in a hypothetical situation....
Macha is like Yost in every way imaginable. Who would you have as a replacement? Willie Randolph would probably the in-season change, or Dale Svuem, but who long term? My vote goes to Don Money.
How far will this one fly?
Dusty Baker!!!
We can always use more veterans on the team.

FYI
Brewers classic on FSN right now. It’s the 9-25-07 game vs. the Cardinals. It’s currently the 6th inning and Soup is on the mound still with only giving up 1 run…I’m not positive, but I think this might have been the last game he pitched will in.
BCB, the preferred above replacement level sarcasm supplier.
Sadly the games not a classic because of Soup’s stellar pitching, it’s actually the game Fielder hit #50.

Was that the day before the Clung/Pujols---> Turnbow Ned fiasco?
The artist formerly known as jihad.
Glancing at baseball reference it looks like it. As a side note, it’s the 8th inning and Yost was just screaming across the field at La Russa, and now La Russa is talking to himself in the dugout. Ha, this is some good stuff, I had forgotten about all this. Bill was just talking about how crazy La Russa is for hitting the pitcher 8th. I might have to go find the archived game of the Pujols plunking just for kicks and giggles.

That whole week was a blur of perpetual rage
After the Counsell sac bunt with 1 out and runners on the corners up 1 in the 10th inning against the Braves, I began to lose control. When Ned brought in Clung while Turnbow was warming up, I just started laughing. It was like a big joke.
The artist formerly known as jihad.
Yeah
I’m definitely not going to miss that smug look Yost perpetually had on his face every time there was a shot into the dugout. I’m not surprised the team crumbled that week, just watching this game I can almost feel the pressure and how uptight everyone appears…something I’m sure Yost had nothing at all to do with.

Not really rational or supported by anything
But I want Morlan to make the team.
The artist formerly known as jihad.
I'm thinking this is what we should expect
Pretty good stuff, but a lack of control. As a guy at the back of the bullpen it might be an alright quality to live with while they try and improve his command.

I didn’t realize Brent Brewer was in camp.
BCB, the preferred above replacement level sarcasm supplier.
I don't think he is
but at this point, the mlb team borrows a bunch of players from the minor league camp. It’s even more extreme when they do split-squad games, and the WBC (not that there are that many Brewers involved) is likely to add to the camp-mixing fun.
Also, cheese.

I was reading...
… Tom H’s blog and there are a lot of comments on there talking about R.J. Swindle. Apparently he throws the eephus. Anybody wanna confirm this?
"Get up, get up, get outta' here, GONE!!!"
Well
Tom himself said that it wasn’t an eephus, just a really slow curve. I listend to the Oakland announcers yesterday and they were quite amused by the pitch.
