Trot Nixon

I admit im biased, i really hope Nixon makes the team over duffy, although his bat has been slow and it looks like a longshot. I used to follow Nixon with Boston, and Nixon and Duffy have one thing in common, they play 110% ALL THE TIME.

Nixon used to be one my favorite players, although he has played like crap since 2006, he still remains one of my favorites, now that hes with the Brewers i root for him every at bat, heres to hoping he has something left in the tank.

I admit Duffy looks like a better player, but i sure hope Nixon's the 4th outfielder.

I know everyone REALLY cares about this, I just felt like letting people know im biased in any discussion about Nixon

Duffy's defense

All reports sound like he is a great defender, and I would love to have that asset off the bench. Even if he can’t be consistent offensively with the irregular PT that a 4th OF receives, he should have no problem contributing defensively. Plus, Nixon can’t play CF.

Note: overall UZR is at +4 career.

I think both will make it

(As a side note: I can’t speak for all the mods/contributors, but we appreciate the fanposts, and in general there’s been a lot of good ones lately, but punctuation and some formatting is appreciated. Things like apostrophes, capitialization, and proper spacing make things so much nicer to read.)

I think, in the sidebar reference section under "Avout Brew Crew Ball"

We should also link two articles from Lookout Landing along with the current one linking to South Side Sox.

This one and this one.

About not avout.

I don’t know what avout means.

I was thinking that too

Lookout Landing has really high standards, I think it would be a great thing to shoot for. We’ll see if KL agrees, and if so, I’ll do it. The South Side Sox one is more about how to make fanposts, fanshots, and comments; those ones are actually about making them well. The style guide is awesome.

Someone should write up something like this, except for us.

I'm not exceptionally interested in being anal about grammar and punctuation.

If someone has an opinion to share, I’d rather they shared it than didn’t share it. Obviously, grammar and punctuation are a plus when trying to do that, but I’m not interested in holding people’s feet to the fire over it.

Lookout Landing is definitely anal about grammar and punctuation

I just think it’s good to set somewhat a standard so we avoid disasters like this or turn fanposts into the other BCB, but it’s at least good to have some sort of standard so that people understand that we want some sort of quality and thought to go into posts. The SSS one is fine, we haven’t had much of a problem in the past, so I’m fine with what you have there. I think part of the reason LL has such a strict policy is because they have such a high readership, they get commenters from their equivalent of the JS blog who don’t contribute anything to the discussion and they want to weed them out quickly.

This conversation...

… combined with my lack statistical analysis pretty much sums up why I never put up fanposts. I certainly appreciate the desire to have standards and to avoid the kind of stuff that goes on at the other BCB, for example. But from this outsider’s perspective I think KL has a point too. Maybe it all depends on what it is that this site is intended to be. Some folks come here looking to be part of an online community of Brewers fans. Personally, I think that’s great, but it seems not everyone does and over time even the thick-headed like myself pick up on that and limit themselves to making comments (rather than fanposts or fanshots) that few if any people read. Probably that means I fall into the category of people who have nothing to contribute. The mods here write well and provide the kind of analysis of this team that’s difficult to find elsewhere, so I think there will always be a readership as long as that quality remains. But it seems to me that spending a great deal of time concerning yourselves with standards, particularly when it’s discussed overtly in reaction to a well-intentioned, if brief, fanpost, will probably diminish the interactive nature of this site and convert it to something more akin to your typical internet zine (if that’s even a word anymore.) If that’s the objective, have at it, and I’ll keep reading, but I think something important will be lost.

Honestly, I totally agree with you

It’s the difference of taking the time to say “I really think Gagne should be taken out of the closer’s role” or “Here’s a proposal to fix the bullpen— how about picking up Brian Fuentes?” vs. “gag-knee is teh suck, run that jerek ot of town” or “the rumor is that FUentes is on the trading block. I say we pick him up for a top guy like LaPorta. What ch’all think? We need him!” This and every other site would suck if there wasn’t a community to comment and discuss with. For me, anyway, I want to write a better post because I know it will be reacted to and critiqued and such. For anyone who posts a fanpost or comment, I don’t care how well they write if they can communicate the idea— I just appreciate them putting the time and thought in to make it look decent. And we really have no problems with that here, I don’t even know why I brought it up .

I’m probably sounding like an arrogant elitist asshole in this thread, but do you see my point? The fanposts are an awesome feature. I would not be writing for this site right now if they did not exist, and I’m sure a lot of writers for sbnation blogs got their start the same way.

I’ve dropped the idea of putting the LL link in the sidebar, but I do hope that the readers here are willing to think posts through. And browsing through your user blog, TSSC, I see a lot of stuff that’s good for fanposts. Generally solid format and mechanics, and some interesting ideas. I love the fanposts, the ones by Marty, One-Flap Down, and tcyoung in the sidebar now are really good. I just think this community is better than having the 85-word random fanposts with no punctuation that you find at places like the evil BCB.

I still like the idea of putting a sort-of guide up for reference though.

Definitaly not as strict as LL (seriously, wait three months to post anything?) but still in order to just help with coherency slightly. For instance, the parts where they talk about making posts as more of a question and making it open to discussion I think would be good when looking at this fanpost and the Craig Counsell one preceding it (Not trying to single you guys out, honestly! I like you!).

These two would really probably be better as comments in a thread, or as an add on to a post about who is an option for the fourth OF, or saying why they think that he would be a good option as a fourth outfielder.

I don’t have a huge problem with these posts. but I know I just kind of skip over them usually when there isn’t much to discuss. I just feel it would be good to have a semi-guide, but certainly nothing quite as strict as those at LL. If the Mods, especially KL, don’t think that’s a good idea, that’s perfectly fine; I certainly respect their ideas and opinions greatly. I was just throwing the idea out there.

Something like this could work

And I’ll totally leave it up to KL. I’d be willing to help out on something if that’s an option, or it could just be a general “BCB guide” thread that everyone comments on and fills up with stuff we do here that’s unique, for new users that come in— because we want them to jump in and converse. I’ve seen a lot of guides lately— Red Reporter, DRaysBay, LL, SSS, evil BCB, and more. The Southsidesox guide is a great background, but it won’t help a new user know what KUG is, or why we had Nine LaPortas, or why the Rally Lobster brings good luck- the specific things that make the site unique.

Seriously KL, if you don’t want to do anything like this, that’s fine. The SSS guide is fine, we’re just always churning out the ideas and throwing them at the wall.

And I really hope you don't think I'm equating commenters here with JS commenters that don't contribute anything

I think everyone understands the difference. If your addition to the thread is “FIrst!” or “Weeks sucks, put him on a seafaring vessel to Guam”, or “mikKKKe KAmeron”, and you are illiterate/incapable of thought (no commenter here fits this description, by the way— except when Cub trolls drop by). Everyone here contributes something. Even a question contributes something, it forces us to think about our points and evaluations.

Just a general statement.

You can edit the fanpost after you publish it, just so you and everyone else is aware of it. The button to do so is in the bar above the “Comments” blue line.

When I post something,

I generally write it in word, and then copy and paste it to the web. Word will generally pick up on most little grammar errors. I’ve always considered myself a decent writer, but I haven’t done much writing since high school, so Word is a good way to kick the rust off.

A) How did you change your name? I’ve been wanting to do that for quite a while.

B) I try my best on grammar & punctuation, but there are definitely instances when I’m just guessing.

You'd have to go straight to SB*Nation

I emailed one of the main guys, I’d go to the Blog huddle blog and find one of the main moderators for all of sbnation, or maybe go to the SB*Nation homepage. You can’t do it yourself, even if you have moderator/manager priveleges, or I’d do it for you— I had to appeal to a higher power.

Just to warn you though, I’m not sure they let everyone change their name because I’m sure they’d get a ton of requests. I wouldn’t have wanted to change it, except the word “jihad” is a strange name to use for front-page posts. Could be worth a try, though.

And I don’t care if there’s spelling mistakes or minor issues in comments, not a big deal at all. I should have never brought it up.

Ah

I may try that. I think I just want to use my name instead of an old internet handle that I don’t use anymore. Then again, maybe I’ll just leave it exclusively for SBN.

It's tough.

You want to destroy western civilization, but at the same time, you don’t want to be perceived as wanting to destroy western civilization. It’s something all of us have to grapple with.

you know what makes me happy?

I found a Firefox plugin that blocks any website you specify. Not only does it stop you before going there if you type in an address in the browser bar, but it de-links any links to that site. It just turns them into plain text. So while you can still get to the site if you really, really want to, it makes it harder.

As much as I like being called a genius, there are some sites that I’ve found that plugin to be very useful for.

Also, cheese.

I never venture there unless absolutely necessary. I might have to investigate that plugin.
