Astrology in the Afternoon: Braden Looper
Jihad is taking a day off from the projection project, so let's take this opportunity to see what's in the stars for the newest player who might be will probably be a Brewer, Braden Looper. Tom H. is reporting this deal likely won't be announced until later this week, giving Looper time to pass a physical. Looper was born on October 28, 1974, making him a Scorpio:
Your capable mind is working well all day. You are able to quickly divide the non-essential from the essential in no time at all today. A period of intellectual creativity has dawned in your life and expressing yourself with flair comes to mean more to you. Beating the odds through cleverness is appealing and this may lead to an interest in all kinds of financial speculation. Others value you for your ability to make practical decisions concerning group issues. You have a natural sense of what the public wants at this time. Clear decisions affecting others could be made now. Plans made today, should work out, no matter how far down the road they seem to be. If you are not with a significant other, this evening may be the time for introductions.
Going point by point:
Obviously this helped this deal go from nowhere to virtually inevitable in a day.
Hopefully this intellectual creativity will carry over to the mound, where Looper only strikes out about 5.2 batters per nine innings over the course of his career, but has still posted an ERA+ over 100 in nine of the last ten seasons.
At the very least, Brewer management seems to have a natural sense of what we wanted at this time, although it took long enough to get there. Glad to hear this one should work out.
I'm pretty sure Looper is married, so he may have to settle for being introduced to the media and his new teammates.

I'm glad they got another starter because they needed one
I am just not sure how good Looper will be. He has a fastball that is a little below average, a change-up that is about 8 mph slower than his fastball, a little below average, and a slider that doesn’t really slide and appears a little below average. At 34 it is likely these skills will diminish, possibly rapidly. Somehow that equated to a 4.16 ERA last year (4.58 FIP). He doesn’t really strike anyone out so if he needs to continue to not walk anyone or he could get in trouble. Looper looks like the kind of guy that seriously could implode any year. He probably will be able to be around league average next year but I wouldn’t count on him for any length of time.

if it doesn't work out...
…I propose that we never again sign someone who has just revived their career while working with Dave Duncan.
Also, cheese.

I'm not sure how good he'll be either
I would never expect 4.18. But I think we can easily justify $6 mil if he throws 180 innings at 4.6 ERA.
Scored three times and detonated an indisputable in four visits to the batting box.

Can someone throw a hot pocket at this move for me?
I just sit back and root for the taser
