Awesome!
Great job. A 1 year deal worth 5 mil or so is perfect. Way to go Doug!

I cannot be upset
Although I’ll never stop griping about the $6MM waste on Hoffman…particularly if that money could have been combined with Looper’s contract for, say…
Oh wait. Aside from Sheets there was no other #1 pitcher I really wanted to see in a Brewers uni. And let’s be realistic: anyone who thought Sabathia actually had a shot of signing here was either drinking heavily or didn’t understand the economics of baseball.

.....yeah, i was drinking heavily;)
i agree though, my view on the hoffman signing has gone from “alright, whooo! we did something” to “….um, i’m not sure why we did that.” granted, i hope and pray he will offer stability in the bullpen…….but i also had that same hope for gagne (NOT comparing the two players, i am just a bit more cautious to put all my eggs in one basket)
as far as loop is concerned, can’t say I oppose. we badly needed depth in the rotation.

I dunno
I’m very happy about signing Looper for $5 million.
I’m not that upset about signing Hoffman for $6 million, given our other options.
And I actually thought we had a chance to sign Sheets - I thought the Yankees would compete for his services, not offer him the GNP of a small nation.
Hmmm…I think I see a poll coming on…

Wait..
your 3rd sentence…should it have said:
And I actually thought we had a chance to signSheetsSabathia – I thought the Yankees would compete for his services, not offer him the GNP of a small nation.
I think that’s what you meant.

And I guess for the record
I was cautiously optimistic about Sabathia signing in Milwaukee, but I honestly thought he’d land in pinstripes all along.

The difference is
Say we would have not signed Hoffman and Looper and instead tried to sign a big ticket starter, like Derek Lowe or Oliver Perez. We would have never have been able to get someone like that on a one year contract. Here we have two solid pitchers with no long term risk.
These moves help us compete, but maybe dont put us over the top this year. But, they wont hurt us down the road like Suppan did. Hopefully Omar Agular and Jeremy Jefferes have great seasons in AAA ball and are ready to step into the limelight next year. Then we let Hoffman and Looper, who hopefully had good seasons and want to test the market again, walk.

Personally
I wouldn’t have wanted Lowe or Perez (particularly Perez). Sheets was the only guy who I’d really have wanted outside of Sabathia, and the odds of that were always long. I may have been OK with Burnett, though not at the price he signed for.
Hence the “Oh wait. Aside from Sheets there was no other #1 pitcher I really wanted to see in a Brewers uni”

Rotation
How does the Brewer starters compare with the Phillies starters from last year. They had an ace and a bunch of middle to end of the rotation guys, right.

and a damn good bullpen
The designated hitter rule is like letting someone else take Wilt Chamberlain's free throws.
