Can Scott Thorman Make This Team?
In all honesty before this last week I had never heard of Scott Thorman and with good reason. At age 27, Thorman has 2 seasons in the Bigs under his belt posting a line of .222/.260/.407 in 415 AB.
So far the former 1st Round Pick has had a pretty good spring training. Granted its still way early and having 11 AB is not anywhere close to being a good sample, but he has posted a line of .636/.636/.818 including 2 doubles.
Looking at the number of At-Bats being given to certain players in spring training, Macha's been giving a lot of ABs to players who are on the bubble as far as making the team.
And right now Thorman has the upper hand when it comes to stats. Things in Thorman's favor is that he is left handed hitter and he can play the outfield, although he's primarily a First Baseman. I'm guessing his fielding in the OF isn't pretty and will hold him back. My question is what does Thorman need to do or continue to do to make this team?

In all honestly I know little about Thorman
But with him playing First base and maybe outfield, I’d say the chance of him making it is very very close to zero. We signed Duffy and Nixon as depth in the OF and Tony Gwynn the second either has to make the team or be put on waivers.
There’s other players that would be ahead of him as the primary call-up if something were to happen to Prince, not the least of whom is Brad Nelson, who can also marginally play the outfield.
Thorman probably has to hit legendarily well to make the team. At least, that’s what I think.

Probably injure Prince Fielder and Brad Nelson
A lot of bubble guys are getting playing time because there’s more playing time for them than regulars. Only some of the starters have started in each game so far, and those guys are pulled halfway through. That leaves a lot of playing time for non-roster players like Thorman.

FYI: Thorman vs Nelson
Zips Projections for 2009:
Brad Nelson .239 .319 .395
Scott Thorman .243 .282 .437
Btw…what happens to a non-roster invitee if they don’t make the team out of spring training? Do they have to make it past waivers to be sent to the minors?

Nope
Non-roster invitees are signed to minor league contracts along with being invited to camp. Since they’re not on the 40-man roster, they don’t have to be exposed to waivers even if the team wants to release them.

Thorman
He was once viewed as a big prospect in the Braves system but then they realized he couldn’t hit. I don’t think he has a chance to make this team as they have better options and will likely have some loyalty to Brad Nelson if given the choice between the two. Most likely he’ll fill in at AAA if Nelson makes the big league squad.

yep to all of the above
Prince is the one guy on the team who doesn’t need a backup (esp. since Hart, Rivera, and probably whoever backs up third base can all play first), and Thorman is the most limited defensively. Even Nixon has a rep for good corner OF defense. All of the infielders can at least fake third base, and some of them (Lamb, McG) are real third basemen.
There may be a team out there that would see a monster spring from Thorman and want his LH bat on the bench, but there are an awful lot of lefties in Brewers camp who outrank him.
Also, cheese.
