Game Thread #-17: Brewers (8-8-2) at Diamondbacks (7-11)
There's a difference between the Cactus and Grapefruit Leagues that comes up about this time each year: travel. While Grapefruit League teams are spread out all over Florida, nearly all of the Cactus League teams are in Phoenix or the suburbs: in fact, today's game is the first time the Brewers have played outside the greater Phoenix area all spring.
Yovani Gallardo takes the hill against former Brewer Doug Davis. Gallardo was very effective in his last outing and has posted a 5.19 ERA in 8.2 innings this spring. Davis is making just his third appearance and second start of the spring and has been lit up a bit, allowing five earned runs in 3.1 innings of work.
Via Adam McCalvy, here's today's lineup:
Lorenzo Cain CF
Chris Duffy LF
Casey McGehee 2B
Bill Hall 3B
Mike Rivera C
Brad Nelson RF
Mike Lamb 1B
Alcides Escobar SS
Yovani Gallardo RHP
Game time is 3:05, and it's a Brewers.com only day. If you can't catch the audio of today's game, you can watch it via Gameday at this link.
Wednesday's Game Thread is now open.

FWIW
Yesterday I predicted today’s lineup as:
CF Duffy
2B McGehee
LF Nelson
3B Hall
1B Thorman
RF Cain
SS Escobar
C Rivera
I correctly predicted seven of the eight starters.
Of the seven, I put four in the right position, putting Nelson in LF instead of first, and flip flopped Duffy and Cain.
Hall was the only one I put in the right spot in the lineup.
"The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous."
Clearly
you know nothing about putting together Spring Training lineups for games that the teams probably shouldn’t even bother playing.
MLB.com is testing audio
the live stream is on a little early. I can hear the guys testing the microphones. They haven’t said anything embarrassing or anything … yet.
They did that yesterday too.
They’ve been turning the web stream on a lot lately, which makes sense because you want people to actually be able to hear the beginning of the broadcast, instead of turning the web stream on immediately before game time and starting the broadcast with an audience of whoever happened to tune in during the first five seconds on the air.

Casey McGehee
Welcome to the roster.
"The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous."
Quick side note
But Casey McGehee has the same jersey number of the departed CC Sabathia, of 52. I enjoy getting obscure player jerseys, just for the sole purpose of hearing people say, “Who is that?” But now, with the same number of Sabathia, it almost makes it better. The number apparently means you can purely dominate as a Brewer.
How far will this one fly?
Me too
Nothing better than sporting my Darko Milicic Piston’s jersey.

Anthony Witrado stopping by to answer questions?
This could be interesting…
"The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous."
Mr. Witrado, what do you think of the replacement pitching acquired this offseason?
Well, Jeff Suppan did get a nice contract, but we’ll see how he performs.
I could see it.
How far will this one fly?
I could see him talking about Gagne (pronounced Gahg-nuh) in that situation

Brad Nelson continues to impress
Mike Lamb, not so much.
Is there something wrong with Gameday cause it says Yo is at 22 pitches...
"Cubs fans boo again – 99% of these people can’t see the plate." -Ueck
THAT IS NOT A MISPRINT!!!
looking back at the pitch by pitch, he was at 22 pitches after 3 innings
Swing and a drive, left center and deep, get up.....get outta here gone, for Ryan Braun - What a shot by Braun, and the Brewers have the lead.... - Bob Uecker bottom of the 8th, Game 162 - 2008
* through 4

Wow
That’s quite impressive. I would have to guess limited strikeouts then.
How far will this one fly?
3 k's by Yo

Actually
I can’t verify today, but in previous days it has only displayed the necessary pitches for at bats, showing 3 straight strikes for a k, four straight balls for a BB and one pitch for balls in play.

Thanks, I mistakenly trusted gameday......

I just realized....
They aren’t showing all of the pitches, it shows four balls for the last batter
even though it was a full count before the walk

Geez, Yo sucks
It took 16 batters to get 15 outs. What kind of play is that?! Ace? I don’t think so. Bring on Suppan!
"Billy Hall hit a line drive between the left-center and right-center fielders"
Five infielders against Hall?
"The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous."
Three
Four outfielders. Joke’s on them because a normally positioned center fielder catches that ball.

Here's Brent Krause again.
I would suggest it means something, but it likely just means the Brewers didn’t take many players to Tucson.

Strange statistical anomalies
If DiFelice finishes this game, he will have saves in back to back outings, and seven innings pitched in those two outings. I’m guessing that hasn’t been done before.
"The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous."
Mike Morgan did it in April 2000 and a host of others did it back when closers were fireballin’ manly men.
Probably hasn’t been done much in spring training though.
