Game Thread #-16: Indians (7-11) at Brewers (9-8-2)
Yesterday the Brewers held the Diamondbacks to one hit. Today, they head back to Maryvale and try to keep the momentum going.
Today, it's Manny Parra taking on Aaron Laffey. Parra is having a great spring, allowing just three earned runs on nine hits in ten innings of work. The Indians are hoping Laffey can provide more than comedy: So far he's allowed seven earned runs in nine innings over four starts.
The game is on WTMJ, or available on Gameday here.
Via Adam McCalvy, here's today's lineup:
Jason Kendall C
Rickie Weeks 2B
J.J. Hardy SS
Prince Fielder 1B
Corey Hart RF
Mike Cameron CF
Bill Hall 3B
Chris Duffy LF
Manny Parra LHP
Behind Parra, David Riske, Todd Coffey and new Brewer Wes Littleton are scheduled to pitch today.
Thursday's Game Thread is now open.

The game starts at 3:05
Or, if you’re Anthony Witrado, it starts at noon. On Saturday. Against the Steelers.

And a mea culpa
If I had my act together, and didn’t run into problems logging in an whatnot, I totally would have set up a March Madness league for BCB.

S'ok
I almost toasted my bracket in the first set of games – Memphis is my national champion.

I picked them too
after 3 games, I’m losing to my daughter. She’s two.

Just pretend the pitcher is batting eight
That’s how I’m getting thru it.

My dad and I just debated the #8 spot on the phone.
He insists he’ll never support it because Ned did it.
"The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous."
I still like it
If the numbers say it works in the long run, it’ll work in the long run. I hate managers doing things just because it’s tradition. Overall, though, it’s gotta be a minor difference since only two managers have seriously tried it to my knowledge.
your dad does have a pretty strong argument…

Ned tried it, he didn't do it
He didn’t move his #4 hitter up to separate him from the pitcher’s spot, so ultimately it was a failure. Typical Yostian move, try half of a strategy and then look around confused when it doesn’t work.
by Getting Yosted on Mar 19, 2009 3:14 PM CDT up reply actions
That was exactly my argument.
Batting the pitcher 8th is a small part of the ideal lineup. Until you move your best hitter into the #2 spot, you’re only tinkering with part of it.
"The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous."
Do you have a link?
I didn’t know the best hitter went to the 2 spot with the pitcher in the 8 spot. In a ‘traditional’ lineup, does the best hitter bat 3rd?
I think it's laid out in some detail in
The Book. I should have read that, but haven’t yet.

LOL, now I feel like an idiot.
I had completely forgotten it was there.

This game is going on at the perfect time.
Of the four NCAA games going on right now, none are interesting or close.

Yeah, to me that one's just not interesting.

I guess I’m biased because one of the teams has a terrapin turtle in their logo

It's part of the bigger problem with this year's field
Because the tournament committee only let 4 mid majors in with at large bids, there are a lot of games with a bad team from one big conference against a bad team from another big conference, and those bore me. I’d much rather watch a school like St. Mary’s or Creighton play Cal…at least then there’s an off chance one of them could surprise and be a good story.
"The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous."
"Bad" isn't fair
Without getting into the full mid-major vs. power conference debate, it’s not fair saying they’re “bad teams,” they’re just not power teams.
You're right, bad was the wrong word.
“Low upside” is the term I wanted.
Take a team like Michigan, for example. We’ve seen them play enough moderate to good teams that we know what they’re capable of. They can be appropriately ranked, categorized and predicted.
But, we don’t know what to expect from a team like Utah State. They’ve won 30 games against a lower level of competition, and it’s possible they have enough upside to win a handful of games and be a great story.
I’d much rather see several 2nd-4th teams from mid-majors who have an unknown potential in the tournament than several of the 6th-8th best teams from power conferences. To me, trying to predict those mid-majors is what makes the tournament fun.

My apologies for derailing a game thread.

Duffy out with an upset stomach?
I don’t know whether to give him credit for trying to go or make a comment about bailing out with something minor.

Like he would ever live down photos of him yakking in Left Field.
Discretion is the better part of valor, in my opinion.
He might never live it down
But that’s worth about a million GRIT points.

The strikeout with the bases loaded
Negates any added value.

He's probably worth less than Gabe Gross was
And all the Brewers got for him was a marginal pitcher…
So yeah, probably waivers.

I'll always wonder
assuming TG gets cut, if he ever had trade value.

Not really
Just shuffle the AAA roster filler around to make room.
Obscure baseball records and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.
Not really...
Trying to name outfielders who will open in AAA, off the top of my head:
Cain
Gwynn
Nixon (maybe)
Bourgeois (also an infielder)
Who am I missing?
I don’t feel like the Brewers have enough outfielders in AAA to be out of places for Gwynn to play.
"The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous."
Maybe Nelson
"I will agree that the attitude [at BCB] is ridiculous and they have done so much to instigate animosity and then block us from responding. Real mature!"
No way Nelson clears waivers.
He’ll be somebody’s fourth outfielder/pinch hitter, just maybe not ours.
"The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous."
No, not Brad Nelson

Yeah, those guys might clear waivers.

You know
if something ever happened to Gunnar, you’d be left with a half-Nelson.

I prefer

Somehow it's fitting that I got to post that

Should probably be in AAA…had a pretty solid year in AA last year.

Hmm
When Corey says it’s a “really nice crowd,” what standard is he using? Willingness to stand up when someone in your row arrives late to game and tries to get to his seat? A pack of blind old ladies needing to cross the street?

His story about Donald Davidson from 50 years ago
distracted Uecker. Let’s remember how old Ueck is now – and no lasik. Really, I hope this clip from the game somehow gets on ESPN because it was a hoot hearing him trying to recover from the MIS-CALL. Yeah, those milky skies in AZ can be murder, but geez….

Weird
Michael Brantley, Zach Jackson, and Tony Graffanino all in the game…for the Indians.
