The Omnibus BCB Posting Guide
If you haven't noticed, readership of this site is growing fast. BCB had nearly 59,000 visitors in February, up from 24,000 a year ago. However, you might not have noticed the change, because our community of commenters has stayed about the same size.
There are several theories on why that is: One is that we're all terrible human beings who squelch the First Amendment rights of people who disagree with us or like athletes our new-fangled statistics don't favor. I'm not sure I buy the logic that we're intimidating, but the SB Nation platform and its system of Comments, FanPosts and FanShots can be, as can the 24 hour waiting period to begin commenting. For a day, I'm going to try waiving that 24 hour waiting period. If that day goes well, I may consider keeping it that way.
So, if you've never commented before or signed up to comment, today would be a good day to give it a shot. Before you get started, though, please take a moment to read these guidelines about the features of the SB Nation platform and the rules we've established for this space. Even if you're an established commenter or contributor, please humor me and take a look at the rules.
Regarding features:
The correct use of FanPosts and FanShots has been outlined well in other places, like this post at South Side Sox, so if you'd like a full, detailed overview of their intended use and how to tag them, head over there. If you'd rather not go into that much depth, here's a basic overview of how to use them.
FanPosts are designed to be used to start a conversation on a specific topic, not unlike a front page story. FanPosts can be promoted to the front page if the moderators decide to give them a wider audience. They have a 75-word minimum: If you don't have 75 words to say on a topic, consider using a FanShot.
FanShots are designed to highlight a link, image or piece of news the community may be interested in. If you find something interesting and Brewer related, a FanShot is the place to post it. FanShots, especially those containing breaking news, are frequently promoted to the front page and/or mentioned in the Frosty Mug.
Help the cream float to the top and the crap get flushed
Underneath every FanPost and FanShot, there are two buttons I want to draw your attention to. They're also available under every comment, in the "actions" menu.
Please click Rec for comments, FanPosts and FanShots you would recommend for others to read, whether it's because they're insightful, funny or just good. A comment recommended three times will be highlighted in green to draw others' attention to it. A FanPost or FanShot recommended five times will receive featured status, keeping it at the top of the list for a period of time. You can also rec front page stories: a front page story that receives five recs will be moved into the "Featured Stories" section.
On the other side, please use the Flag button to help us filter out abuses of the system and offensive material. If you see content in the FanPosts, FanShots or comments that qualifies as trolling, spam or is just offensive, flagging it draws the moderators' attention to it. We're usually watching as well, but user flagging helps us find offensive material faster, and knowing someone else found the material troubling as well sometimes helps us make the decision on whether or not to delete material.
On grammar and punctuation
If the Grammar Police were here, they'd pull me over every day and cite me for excessive comma usage. I'm not going to tell anyone how to write, what words to use and not use (cursing aside), or delete comments for misusing or failing to use capital letters. With that said, remember one of the cardinal rules of the internet: all people can see is your writing, so if your work looks like it was produced by a third grader, odds are it'll be read and treated that way.
Things I will not tolerate
Excessive aggressiveness. I recognize that's a vague classification, hopefully this guideline will help: This is a place to discuss the Brewers, not argue about them. We reserve the right to close comments on posts and/or delete comments if we feel that line is being crossed.
Cursing at someone. I'd rather we didn't curse in this space at all, but I recognize it will happen on occasion. I will not, however, tolerate cursing directed at other commenters. Again, we're here to discuss the Brewers, not start a barfight.
Namecalling. Again, this is part of the note on aggressiveness. Debate someone's point, don't call them a name for holding that opinion. Calling someone who disagrees with you an idiot adds nothing to the conversation and will not be tolerated.
Spam. There are correct and incorrect ways to promote your site or product. If you're only here to promote your stuff, odds are you're doing it wrong.
Trolling. It only takes me about three clicks to delete a comment and warn/ban the commenter, so if you're just stopping by to call Ryan Braun a crybaby, the only time you're wasting is your own. With that said, please make sure you have a good reason before you flag someone for trolling. Not every fan of another team who stops by this space is trolling - some of them just want to have a conversation about the team.
Politics. There are enough places on the web for political debate. This is not one of them.
At any rate, thanks for reading and welcome. Please work with us to help this site remain the best place on the internet for informed conversation on the Brewers.

When i was relatively new to BCB
I posted a story during a Cubs series about some fans who had taunted Prince Fielder. He went on to hit two homers that game, and jawed at those fans as he rounded the bases. It received a lot of recs, so it made the featured stories; it received a lot of flags. I was pretty immature in writing it, and even though I was writing it as a joke, I called Cubs fans stupid. It sparked a lot of Cubs fans coming over to argue. Things got nasty, and comments were eventually closed. At the time, I was proud of myself for writing something that garnered so much attention. Looking back on it, I’m not proud of it at all.
Aside from disliking Cocky Cubs fans, I have nothing against Cubs Fans. If you’re not abrasive to them at the games, most of them are cool people. So when you posted this, KL, it got me thinking. If we are going to get a bunch of new readers/commenters/posters from Yahoo!, I wonder if we are going to get a whole lot more posts that spark controversy during the Cubs games like the one I had written last year.
Also, I’ve noticed that Yahoo! has an increasing tendency lately to post a blogger’s reaction to a story on their front page. I can only assume that those bloggers are from Yahoo!-partnered sites, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see a post from SBnation get on Yahoo!’s front page.
Anyway, I’m glad you posted these guidelines KL, and I’m really glad they’re not as strict as the guidelines from other sites. I feel like we really encourage participation from everybody, and I wouldn’t want us to turn into bloggernazis.

I tend not to worry.
There have been exceptions, but for the most part our community here tends to keep things more or less in line, and when we don’t, it’s not that hard to contain/quarantine.
Really, though, the community sets the tone here, and barring a major shift in the community, I don’t expect the tone to change much.

I did likewise. It’s no secret Cubs and Brewers fans don’t mix well, and I saw fit to write junk on them around when I joined last year. I don’t really see the point in that as much as I do just posting facts, trade rumors and ideas, or real fun minor league notes! We don’t need to jab at anyone on here, because we Crewers are better than that at the end of the day, and there’s too many great contributors on SB Nation who set a great example of just that.
I’ve easily skimped on the ranting roots, and love to write more stuff like this.

I don't mind Cubs fans.
If your obviously looking to challenge them, then they will get nasty—just as we sometimes can be here. But I’ve commented some at the other BCB, and have generally been welcome once I established that I wasn’t trolling. You definitaly have to be careful with what you say, but if you are civil, they aren’t as awful as some would have you believe.

Agreed. People here have surpassed my knowledge exponentially, although, I must say I’m glad they have because my knowledge of the game has also grown exponentially. So thanks to all the brilliant minds here, keep up the good work, I appreciate all the in depth knowledge very much.

Good deal
In the Trot Nixon post, I got scared that we were on our way to a straight up blog and not a fan community. So, to echo tcyoung, I’m happy this isn’t going to be an uptight, overly strict blog.
If you are like me and not really huge into all the numbers of the game (crazy since I have my bachelor’s in math), it can be kind of intimidating posting or commenting on here. I’m just glad KL isn’t going to make it more intimidating if I don’t capitalize my i’s. :)

Not responding to you specifically, but since you brought up the point
There’s a huge difference between:
- not being into the numbers/caring about that kind of stuff
- coming in and incessantly arguing a point about player evaluation with everyone and not citing anything to back it up
I would hope it’s not an intimidating environment here. If you want to come in and talk baseball without discussing numbers, that’s what the site is for, right? But if you have a point that you want to prove or argue about, you’re probably going to need evidence to back it up, I would think. If you can prove something with anecdotal evidence or other stuff, awesome, but my choice for supporting my arguments is numbers.
I honestly welcome you guys to ask questions or challenge me on stuff, and I think the other “statheads” would agree.
All of you guys don’t have to think you need to come in with a bunch of numbers to support a general observation. But if you’re going to argue a point, I’d expect some support for it, that’s where I’m coming from. But there are plenty of avenues of conversation that don’t have to do with numbers and stats, and I hope all of you guys that are talking about not commenting so much because you think you don’t bring as much to the table— that’s totally not the right way to go about it.
Someone will probably misinterpret this now and think I don’t want any non-stat people to comment :).

Intimidation
I do think a lot of the regulars can be pretty intimidating at times. I’ve been coming here for a couple seasons, but haven’t been a regular commenter for a while now mainly for that reason. I’ve started commenting a little more recently, but for the most part, hadn’t done so for most of last season. The thing is, anyone who visits here even semi-regularly knows there are a lot of stat heads around here. I rarely visit other teams’ blogs, but would guess it’s one of the more stat-heavy blogs out there. I generally like the analysis and find most of it interesting. That said, many commenters can get pretty nasty when you don’t agree the general consensus of the site. I personally took a lot of heat last year for commenting about how I thought Prince’s vegetarian diet was affecting his performance among other things. (Granted, I probably invited some of it through my occasional quasi-drunk commenting.) The point is, I definitely think there is something to some of the sentiments that have been expressed of late.

yea I will agree
There needs to be a semi balance and understanding between both parties. I think jordan was getting at, make your post and put your observations to start and spur discussions and don’t be afraid to just because you aren’t that up to date on all the stats. But don’t continually push your point like, oh player A is way better than player B because I saw him go 4-5 last week and his swing looks awesome. Overall, even though I feel really dumb and even after a year here I still don’t feel like I can comprehend much, I love the quality of the posts that go on here, it;s something you won’t find anywhere else for Brewers coverage.
by DoubleJ235 on Mar 2, 2009 11:26 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
You said this better than I did
You can even keep saying that Player A is way better than player B— but just expect someone to dispute that, probably with some numbers.
I hope some of you guys come back and start to comment more after this. I’m not that intimidating, and I’m sure I have less background in math than every single one of you. :)

I agree...it's a double-edged sword
I’m probably 10 times smarter about baseball now than a year ago, thanks to all the analysis on BCB (and Moneyball helped quite a bit, too), and I now possibly know more about the Brewers than any of my friends know about their teams.
But I still don’t have anywhere near the expertise to post so much as a FanPost or substantive argument in a comment on one. By comparison, I would be more than qualified—probably overqualified—to offer any sort of opinion on the JS blog (shudder). So the question becomes “learn a bunch or participate?” I choose the former, at least for now.
That’s why I generally limit my comments to game threads—it doesn’t take much expertise to type “WOO!” when Braun hits a homer.

Trolling
As a newbie to the website, who’s been reading the site for 2 years, but posting for the very first time….what’s trolling?
by Berlin Saints on Mar 3, 2009 10:31 AM CST reply actions 0 recs
First off, welcome!
Trolling is coming to a site and posting something outlandish just to gain attention and stir up angry commenters.
For example, if a Cub fan stops by to tell us all how much the Brewers suck, that’s trolling.
