Game Thread #-31: Brewers (2-2-1) at Padres (1-1)
The bar has been raised, Brewer fans: To keep things even and balanced, the Brewers need their second tie of the spring today.
It's Jeff Suppan (0-0, 4.50 ERA) for the Brewers against Josh Geer of the Padres. Geer made five starts for the Padres in 2008, posting a 2.67 ERA in 27 innings. He was a third round pick in 2005, and John Sickels rates him as a C+ prospect. Before the game, the Brewers should see if the Padres will trade him for Tony Gwynn.
Monday's game thread is now open.

Geer's second MLB start was against the Brewers
He allowed two runs in five innings.

Brewer lineup
C Jason Kendall
2B Craig Counsell
RF Corey Hart
1B Prince Fielder
DH Angel Salome
CF Trot Nixon
LF Brad Nelson
3B Casey McGehee
SS Alcides Escobar
(h/t Tom. H)
Two notables: Nixon is in center, even though he hasn’t played a big league game there since 2003 and hasn’t played there consistently since 2001.
The other one is Jason Kendall. The fact that he’s leading off for the second time this spring makes me wonder if Macha is considering doing it during the season.

LF, Emil Brown
1B, Kyle Blanks
RF, Drew Macias (filling in for Brian Giles, strained left quad)
C, Eliezer Alfonzo
3B, Travis Denker
SS, Everth Cabrera

Cliff Floyd /and/ Emil Brown?
Admittedly the Pods haven’t been on my radar over the winter, but why are they building an AL team to pretend to compete in the NL West?
that's the way they're handling petco
they tried getting really good outfielders, but that didn’t work.
now they figure nobody can cover all that ground, so they just sign good hitters who can’t run.
Also, cheese.

Kendall
It might just be a way to give him more at bats while not playing as much in the field.

At least I’m pretty sure.
"The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous."
Thanks
To bad I can’t stream to OSX, I don’t fee like buying that lame windows media translator. Unless someone else has other options.
Crappy Laptop speakers it is then!
what?
it’s a silverlight plugin. works great on OSX. unless I misunderstand your point

Strange
I keep getting an error and the plugin it tries to download is pay. Maybe I’ll try again.
(I’m also on a hackintosh so it’s not the same)
Todd Coffey, R.J. Swindle, Tim Dillard and Lindsay Gulin are also pitching today
So says McCalvy.
"The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous."
You'll have to go to Brewers.com and sign up for Gameday Audio
It costs $15, but you can use it to listen to every MLB game all season, so it’s a pretty good deal.
"The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous."
No, but he did mispell the Padres pitcher's last name.
It’s Geer, not Greer.
"The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous."
I think the Padres have a couple ties in Cactus League play
Upon looking, they’re 1-1-2.

Two ties?
If a tie is like kissing your sister, what’s two ties? Going to, erm, second base?

Speaking of
During the spring, pitchers don’t know to keep the ball out of the zone against Corey Hart. 1 pitch, 1 swing, 1 single.
"The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous."
hey, that reminds me
did you guys see the headline after Team USA tried to force Brad Hawpe to play despite his nagging injury?

And another single..
Lets recap this inning so far for all you with out audio.
1st – Fly ball to the wall (400feet or so)
2nd – Walk, SB
3rd – Walk
4th – HR
5th – Ground Ball Single.
cant he be like marbury with the knicks
and just sit in the crowd, watch the game, but not be on the team
The designated hitter rule is like letting someone else take Wilt Chamberlain's free throws.
I'd rather he be like Eddy Curry
Sit on an exercise ball and have it explode.
Obscure baseball records and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.
To be fair
I hope he can work out of it and have a decent year. We need to be giving him as many ST innings as we can
so he gets hurt
and cant pitch for the brewers… just kidding of course
The designated hitter rule is like letting someone else take Wilt Chamberlain's free throws.
Can't wait for Sup to take the mound for the opening game of the season
He would be easily the worst pitcher starting that day.
But would he be the worst Brewer opening day starter ever?

scott karl was probably injured?

Big Daddy D’amico was probably hurt too.

But they got the win, and really that is all that matters, right?

true even with giving up 3 in the 9th
Though I doubt we will get 10 runs this year if Lincecum is starting against us.
Karl had a bad spring, Eldred was hurt
Says the NYT.

More
From the St. Louis Post-Dispatch through Matt Morris Online, curiously:
Milwaukee manager Phil Garner is dissatisfied with lefthander Scott Karl, who has a 7.20 earned-run average this spring. Garner has pulled Karl’s scheduled opening day start against the Cardinals and will open Monday with lefthander Rafael Roque instead.
Roque’s claim to fame is that he surrendered the 64th home run hit by both Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa last year.
Karl has been pushed back to the No. 4 spot in the rotation. Righthander Steve Woodard will pitch the second game against the Cardinals and lefthander Jim Abbott, who a year ago at this time wasn’t even playing baseball, will pitch the third game.
The Cardinals pitchers for the series will be Donovan Osborne, Kent Bottenfield and Kent Mercker.

From the same game
Sean Berry may also qualify as the worst starting first baseman ever

Did he hit a home run that game?
There was a year where I was a huge Sean Berry fan all year because of his opening day homer.
Padres
Talking about how great Ned Yost was the best manager ever
The designated hitter rule is like letting someone else take Wilt Chamberlain's free throws.
What are they saying?
Is i the radio guys or TV guys?
Speaking of, Is vasgersion done with the Padres now that he’s with MLB network?
They were saying
The Brewers were very reactionary, and Yost knew the young players, and it was the first year they made the playoffs, should not have been fired… the excuse to mix it up seems not very smart, and just an excuse to do something when a team is struggling
The designated hitter rule is like letting someone else take Wilt Chamberlain's free throws.
Vasgersian is done
Exclusively with MLB Network now.

Wasn't really paying attention
Did Anderson just say the Brewers played a B game against the Dodgers? Was Witrado partially correct?

There we go
http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/40559057.html
So, the Brewers did play the dodgers, just a couple days after Witrado thought, and in a B game that wasn’t covered.

hahahahaha
This blog post is priceless.
We’re over at the regular game in Peoria now against the Padres and Jeff Suppan got off to a bad start. With one down in the first, he walked Chris Burke and Cliff Floyd before surrendering a long three-run homer to Emil Brown.
I’m sure the Suppan bashing will now commence.

I found this while perusing the comments
He also said Ivan Rodriguez Jr. broke his leg.
Ivan Rodriguez is 16; Ivan Dejesus Jr. broke his leg in the game.
commence is a pretty big word.

It does prove something though...
they DO have editors, because the initial post probably had a lot of exclamation marks and elevens in it after commence.
Hall is still a week or two away from playing
So sayeth B.A.
"The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous."
Does anyone know what Ned Yost is up to this year?
Is he managing in the minors somewhere? Taking a year off?

I heard he's running Citigroup

make all the jokes you want, guys
but he could only be on a NASCAR pit crew.

I have a "Ned Yost" google alert
Because I wanted to be able to post if he started doing something else. So far, nothing.
"The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous."
thanks- i couldnt find anything either
I figured an open ended question would provide not only funny answers, but also the real answer… BrewCrewBall never disappoints
The designated hitter rule is like letting someone else take Wilt Chamberlain's free throws.
Wow.
I wonder what would happen if one wore that to Miller Park.
"The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous."
Trot Nixon is 0-for-11 in spring.
Wonder if that’s why Brad Nelson got a start in the outfield today.
"The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous."
I recognize he needs to get work
But if Swindle comes in and pitches a whole inning, including facing some right handed batters, does this inning show us anything about his ability to work as a LOOGY?
"The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous."
Did he face a lefty and get him out?
If he did, he’s a LOOGY.
If he got the righties out too, he’s Hideki Okajima or Hong-Chih Kuo under an assumed name. (Or Craig Breslow, although I’m still not sure if Breslow’s non-LOOGY appearances are wise or misuse…he pitched 3 innings in a game last year.)
How many non-situational lefties besides Okajima and Kuo are left? I have to be missing some. (NOT SHOUSE.)
He faced Floyd and Macais
Both Popped out to SS.
If you get a chance, look at Kyle Blanks’ picture on Gameday. What a DBag. (if you click on Lineups/Bench, and then click on his San Diego Padres, and then click his name, a picture will pop up.
Wagner and Fuentes :)
quite a few, if you count the 6th starters/middle relievers who are on and off rosters every year. We just never seem to have any.
Also, cheese.

The only one...
that come to mind immediately is JP Howell with Tampa
by Infield Fly Rule on Mar 2, 2009 3:48 PM CST up reply actions
I'll take the bait
Lefties who pitched more than 60 innings while making more than 80% of appearances out of the bullpen last season:
J.P. Howell
Kuo
Jeremy Affeldt
Rafael Perez
John Grabow
Darren Oliver
Scott Downs
Matt Thornton
Damaso Marte
Renyel Pinto
Ron Mahay
Brian Fuentes
Okajima
Alan Embree
Jesse Carlson
"The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous."
Eight of those guys averaged more than one inning per appearance.
"The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous."
For frame of reference
The last Brewers to meet that criteria were:
Ray King in 2002 (but he averaged less than an inning per appearance)
Valerio Delos Santos in 2000
Rafael Roque in 1999
Two Rafael Roque references in the same post must be some sort of record.

Thanks
That explains why I don’t recall them (and as Jeff says, they’re common, it’s just that the Brewers never have one.) The ones I named happened to be the ones I saw play in ’08, except that I forgot Downs and Affeldt were lefthanders.
Wagner and Fuentes aren’t middle relievers. which is another reason I forgot them. Kuo and Downs were converted to relief after injury, right?
Tim Dillard gettng two innings of work.
He could use a nice outing.
"The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous."
Six up, six down
Can we keep him?
