Fantasy Ball Help Please
Hey everyone. I decided that i would make my inaugural fantasy baseball start this year. Ive always played fantasy football but never baseball. So if anyone has any tips for me or what the best fantasy baseball websites are to join a league (cuz i dont think too many of my friends would be dedicated as they are in football), can you please let me know.
I got my fantasy baseball magazine and i read the thing, now i just need to know where the best place to join a league is. I want to get in a league where money is on the line, even though i aint planning on winning anything cuz im a virgin to this. But any info, tips, help, etc would be appreciated.

Hyatt covered this recently
But I always liked Yahoo!. Poorly designed sites are confusing and annoying (cbssportsline.com, I’m looking at you!), but Yahoo!’s is pretty straightforward and clean.

Yahoo! is great
I’ve moved on to ESPN last year, and I like it 100 times more than Yahoo. It’s probably just the interface, because they are essentially the same. In ESPN you start 5 OF, and when your turn comes up in the draft, the ESPN noise sounds.. dun nuh nuh, duh nuh nuh.
I don’t know where the best place to play for money is, though. I wouldn’t reccommend ESPN for that.

Really it's between ESPN & Yahoo
However, if you are looking for a money league, I’d start here. There are thousands of leagues to join, and ones that fit exactly what you are looking to do.

Holy shiz
I just realized I have a draft on Wednesday night, and have done ZERO preparation. I’m screwed.

you are fine
hit up this site for a quick primer, and then go grab a trusted source of projections and use them to create a spread sheet. Go to mock draft central, and do a practice draft or two.
If it’s an auction, dedicate $1 to each position. Then budget out your pitchers and hitters according to how you want to spend your cash (2/3rds hitter and 1/3rd pitchers is standard). make sure to put a petty cash budget of $10 aside and then go get your guys.
Good luck

I’ve never done an auction, but would love to do it. I like challenging fantasy leagues. I’ve been in some 18 team baseball and football leagues.

what magazine did you buy?
because i’d say the first step is getting more information. it can be overwhelming to start, but i think that generally there’s a better way to prep for any draft than buying a magazine and “reading” it. there are so many free or cheap options on the web that you can’t pass up: Rotoworld, Rotowire, Baseball Prospectus, etc. you can see free pre-season projections at FanGraphs, The Hardball Times, Baseball Think Factory, and at sites & blogs all over the web. spend a little time at those, figure out which seem the best to you, combine them, get comfy and settle in with a couple.
quick (typical?) anecdote: i’ve been in one league (a 14-teamer with 27-man rosters—i.e. a fairly deep league) for six years now and several of the guys show up on draft day (we do an in-person draft, which, imo, is still the best way to do it if you can pull it off) with their magazine or cheat sheet printed off and scratch their heads in the later rounds. invariably those guys have finished in the bottom half league every year.
my point being: don’t be like those guys, BrewerBlue87! there’s still time!
"Nothing is working right now with a lot of the guys. We're trying to see pitches and see what we can do. ... I'm not going to sit there and walk, though. I'll eventually find it, and hopefully we'll still be in it." -Corey Hart

I agree
but you want good stuff and truly free, go with the following sites:
Fantasy Baseball Express: Mike Kuchera has made a good name for himself with his great podcast, and I’ll get into other great podcasts as well on the next mailbag tomorrow. He’s got great analysis though a strong Yankee bias
Fake Teams: Part of the SB Nation family, another great source for a mass of good fantasy opinions.

.
thanks for the info guys. i have made numerous trips to rotoworld and a couple other sites so its not like i bought the magazine and was happy with only doing that, i buy the magazine cuz i get real excited for the season to start and i go out and buy the first lindy’s baseball magazine i see. but yea ive done a little more research than that but this should definitely still be a learning experience. thats why i want to get into a money league, so hopefully the other people in there will take it real seriously and play how ur supposed to, that way i can learn from them as well.
