Game Thread #-15: Brewers (10-8-2) at Mariners (10-10)
Between the end of the Marquette game and the beginning of the Wisconsin game today, the Brewers travel to take on the Mariners.
Today at 3:05, it's Seth McClung taking on Jason Vargas. McClung has made a couple of B game starts, so he's making just his second Cactus League start (and third appearance) of the spring, having posted an 11.57 ERA in the 4.2 innings he's pitched in big league games. Vargas has made four appearances but this will be just his second start: He's posted a 6.75 ERA in 6.2 innings of work.
The game is available via Gameday Audio at Brewers.com and via Gameday at this link.
Friday's Game Thread is now open.

McGehee getting a game at 1st
Looks like they are making sure of his versitility before giving him a spot on the 25 man roster.
As per the above acticle from McCalvy:
“If he shows he can play there,” manager Ken Macha said, “it’s another mark in his column.”
He's also tomorrow's starting pitcher.

There's actually five bench spots available.
Five starting pitchers, seven man bullpen, eight starting position players and a five man bench makes 25, so it’s actually Rivera, Counsell, McGehee, Duffy and Nelson off the bench.

But, but, but...
Rivera doesn’t count. You can’t use your back-up catcher in a game for something other than to replace your starting catcher in the case of injury. Even then you don’t necessarily use your back-up, because if your back-up is hurt after you’ve already pulled your starter who was hurt, you’ll have no catcher. So it is better to use a non-catcher to replace your injured starter instead of your back-up, so you have a back-up in case the non-catcher catching is injured.
You have no concept.

Actually, you can
If you have McGehee as an emergency catcher.

Don't forget...
Dave Bush can also serve as an emergency catcher. With McGehee and Bush, it gives Macha quite a bit more flexibility with his bench and Rivera.

And Counsell as the emergency emergency catcher
He can just steal Vinny Rottino’s glove again.

Then can we add him

The artist formerly known as jihad.
I think he probably does.
At this point they’re just experimenting to see what else he can do. He’ll probably catch a game next week too.

If he was a left handed hitter hen he would definately be on the roster
I think he will make it as Lamb is his only compition for the 2nd IF slot behind Counsell and he has not really impressed this spring. However since Lamb is a leftie some may view him as a platoon partner for Hall if he struggles again this year.
The fact that McGehee can also catch in an emergancy helps – may allow Macha to pinch hit for Kendall more often than Yost did, knowing that if something then happens to Rivera there is still an option left on the bench.
The fact that Nelson may well make the team would make McGehee 3rd choice 1st baseman but might aswell see how he fields the position.
Does anyone think the Crew would be interested in Jenkins?
The Phillies are apparently shopping him with them picking up most of his salary as per Jayson Stark
Counsell hit a ground-rule double?
Must’ve been a pretty big pebble in the infield.

Gameday in mid-season form
Mitch Stetter has pitched 5 innings so far.
Who is this Rivera guy??
Too bad the team didn’t have him last year.
