Chat with Anthony Witrado
On Tuesday night at 7, Anthony Witrado is hosting a JS Online chat. What do you want to ask him?
[UPDATE: don't forget, the chat is tonight. I want to see some good BCB questions there, people. Like, "Anthony, do you cite Ronnie Belliard as a sartorial influence?"]

Something about Mike Cameron and all those damn strikeouts, or how Manny Parra just doesn’t have the composure to be a true ace. Bonus points for dropping a “credability”, “whatever that is”, etc.

Well, it’s your typical Witrado ‘show that you could care less’ response.
Many examples of that in this splendid bit on Brew Town Beat from last year.
PensBurgh penalty - Lavender - 2 minutes for hijynxing.
I wonder if Witrado is "Dawgbite", the last commenter on the Brew Town Beat post.
If you click on Dawgbite’s profile, you’ll see he joined Blogger in July 2008. The comment was posted on July 8th, and “Dawgbite” has had no activity since. Dawgbite, apparently, had intimate knowledge of Witrado’s background. Could be his mom, a friend, or maybe Tom. I’m not sure how the responses quoted in that post make him a “new era writer with new styles”, whatever the hell that means.
Wouldn’t surprise me at all if it was him. I’ll agree that the “inside access” can be important, but only if there’s actually some reporting going on. I can’t recall the last time I heard Tom or Witrado provide information from the clubhouse that you couldn’t find elsewhere, though Tom is adept at answering his phone when Melvin calls him to give a quote on a rumor that he wants leaked to the press.

Baseless accusation
Based on conversations I’ve had, it would not shock me to discover Garry Howard, JS Sports editor, as the source of the comment.
"The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous."
I submitted a serious question
I can’t exactly remember how I worded it, but it was something to the effect of,
“with Suppan’s horrible September and inconsistent spring, how do you think the club justifies starting him v. Lincecum on opening day? Also, you had mention blogs on previous posts. Do you feel more pressure in the accountability department since fans have more public avenues to express their thoughts on subjects and your writings. For example, how do you deal with the backlash received when you wrote the article, "Injured Gwynn not panicking- yet.” and the 2nd sentence of the article you quote him as saying, “I’m starting to panic.” Also, did you ever find that Numba 1 Stunna blinged out necklace you lost? Thanks for doing this.

From a while back
Q: Adam of Milwaukee – Hey Anthony, There was a showdown on Costas’ HBO show last night between the Deadspin creator and a national writer talking about blogs and the media. Where do you and Tom stand on that argument? There are so many great blogs about the Brewers (Brew Crew Ball, Chuckie Hacks) that in my mind serve as mainly a way for people to get excited about this Brewers season. I don’t see anything wrong with that! Do you!
A: Anthony Witrado – Not so much, but those people are also not in the clubhouse gathering inside info like Tom and I. Blogs are all good as long as you know which ones are informed and which ones are just fans. I also hope people don’t mistake the people who write the fan blogs for actual journalists. But to better answer you, no, I don’t see anything wrong with it
The artist formerly known as jihad.
It's kinda funny
how low journalism standards have fallen with his work
I just sit back and root for the taser
This thing is underway, folks
Hahaha Hyatt start your own blog:
I don’t think he should start opening day, but you never know. You could get the Suppan who will throw six shutout innings. … All of us in the media are held plenty accountable, and now it is for public consumption when we make a mistake in a blog or a chat. These things are meant to be causual and interactive, and when that happens, sometimes mistakes or typos are left in. It’s not a major issue because it’s a web log, almost like a social networking site. But people still feel the need to tell you how much more than you they know. It is unacceptable to make mistakes in the paper, however. But the blogs are a tool for us to get out information as quickly as possible and post interesting stories or thoughts we might have. Fans should always hold their local reporters accountable, but it gets to a point where you stop reading comments because some readers use it as a platform for personal attacks, which isn’t cool. They wouldn’t do that to your face, and I know this first hand because I have run into some of those people who always have the same response: “I didn’t mean for it to come off like that.” As for the Tony Gwynn Jr. story, Tom and I don’t write headlines. We just turn in stories and leave the headline writing to those who get paid for that and they come up with headlines to grab your attention. But like I said, people are going to make mistakes, whether we’re professionals or not. I appreciate being held accountable because it makes us more diligent and aware. However, as people, no one wants to get bashed on their own blog. If people feel like they need to hold us accountable by insulting Tom and I, they should just start their own blog to do it and leave ours to people who care about Brewers baseball.
Already done.
The artist formerly known as jihad.
What actually surprised me
is that others come up with the headlines.
So there’s some other guy who comes up with the headlines that are completely contradicted in the first 2 sentences. I find it difficult that one of the premier writers on staff doesn’t have enough time to make sure he doesn’t look like an idiot.
The other thing is that I’m very sure KL goes through a grammar check to make sure his blog that he writes on a daily basis to make sure he doesn’t look like an idiot.
My main point is that he is paid to write. I don’t think it’s too much to ask for him to run the spelling and grammar check in his program so we aren’t distracted by his lack of skill from the main story.
I just sit back and root for the taser
That's been the standard practice at newspapers for at least 30 years.
I don’t work in that business, but I know people write for newspapers that periodically complain about the headlines chosen for their work. I’m not defending him. I don’t care for his work, but I seriously doubt he has any input on his headlines at all simply because very few writers for traditional newspapers have that kind of control.
As an aside, I’ve found most of the anti-Witrado vitriol to be uninteresting (though I joined in earlier in this thread and I laughed like everyone else at Lavender’s "impersonation"). But the navel-gazing and discussions about whether we’ve somehow “crossed a line” that’s going on now is even less interesting, not to mention hypocritical. If the former is somehow beneath KL and the boys, then the latter is too. If giving up the minor amounts of fun generated by the anti-Witrado comments and posts means we get to skip out on the sermons that follow, I’m all for it.
But what he hell do I know…
by Ted Simmons Speed Camp on Mar 25, 2009 9:13 AM CDT up reply actions 1 recs
Interesting
Then those people who choose the headlines are idiots too.
As for the vitriol towards Witrado, I think it’s because we expect a high level of reporting and writing from those priveledged enough to be paid to follow the crew. We get damn good writing, reporting, and analysis for those who just do it out of the love of their team. The standard has been set pretty high with Sackman, KL, and not to mention those that do great work on this and other sites all around. It’s a matter of standards. And we want those people to take the priveledge they get seriously.
Now if Lavender’s impersanation was all we had in regards to Witrado’s articles, I’d be fine with that too. But this internecine (see what you did to me Sackman) conflict over whether we crossed a line is mitigated by the fact that he takes the time to stoke the fires by publically publishing the comments. He has a right to publish whatever he wants in his mailbag, and he chooses to show off the backlash towards him and the mainstream media by putting those questions in his mailbaggie. That makes it fair game.
I just sit back and root for the taser
Aww is he done already?
Apparently 7 pm means “done well before 7 pm”.
The artist formerly known as jihad.
This is actually not bad
Witrado is doing a significantly better job than I thought he would with this. He’s not dodging questions, which is nice.
Here's the issue though
If you asked me, or KL, or Jeff, or any other moderator or regular commenter here those same questions (analysis anyway), I/they could provide better analysis, better, umm, grammar, less condesencion, and generally better insight. He’s only good for the access that we don’t have (quote monkey with a press pass). When the standard is him actually answering the questions, I think the standards are too low.
The artist formerly known as jihad.
Honestly
I actually gained some respect for Witrado. His stories have been terrible, but tonight, I thought he answered the questions with quite a bit of thought. I could have gone without the weird way of answering clothing questions, but then again… if people are going to come after him, he has a right to go after them.
So it looks like it's done
and he moved the question about his gangsta attire to the top of the page, and kept the baseball questions at the bottom. Words cannot describe this guy’s ineptness.
I like how he does the thing where you pick apart the other guy’s argument by listing a spelling error. The funny thing is that there are like 5 in his chat and I’m pretty sure you spell it “Gangsta”.
The artist formerly known as jihad.
Of course
Well of course that’s the case, all of those people know a lot more about baseball than he does. I was expecting worse than Joe Morgan “analysis,” so yes, my standards are indeed too low.
I guess I just don’t really care what Witrado does. If he can bring news faster than other people, great. If he can’t, I have other sources. The reality is that your average JS reader doesn’t really understand analysis when it comes from someone such as JS, you, or anyone from a sabermetrically inclined blog. That’s why I come here, and not to JSonline.
I tend to forgive some of the grammar/spelling in a chat session. I hold blog entries to another standard, though. They should absolutely have decent grammar, writing style, and spelling. I disagree with Anthony on that. Chat sessions, on the other hand, are more forgivable since he is essentially shooting from the hip. You can’t say that when you’re under pressure to answer a series of questions, and they’re coming quickly, that you would go back and ensure everything was properly written. That’s something that should be reserved for actual posts.
I know I butchered some grammar there, and I don’t really care. If I had been posting a fanshot or fanpost, I would bother to go back and rewrite it.
Our (or my) standards are definitely too low, but I just don’t care. I don’t expect anything because I haven’t gotten anything from AW or TH before, so why should I expect it now?

Shameless Bait Attempt
# Q: Jordan, Appleton – What stats do you like for player evaluation? wOBA and FIP?
# A: Anthony Witrado – For position guys, I like to look at OBS and OBP. I think batting averages can be misleading. If you look closer at that, you have to get into percentage of balls put into play and all of those kinds of stats because average is so dependent on a defender’s range and such factors. Defensively, fielding percentage can also be misleading because of range factor. For pitchers, percentage of hits of balls put into play is a decent stat, but all of these have holes, which is why baseball is such a stat-happy sport. It is tough to evaluate a player strictly on a couple of categories.
Cool, he tried to play the card of knowing more than me even though I mentioned wOBA. Not a terrible attempt. Would’ve been good to see him recognize what wOBA is. I think that’s supposed to be “OPS”, unless he’s making up stats.

What an immature brat, really.
I tried to promise myself that I’d never think like this, but it’s ridiculous. There are hundreds of qualified journalists that would be twice as good, passionate, knowledgeable, and personable if they had that job, and the JS managed to pick that guy. I seriously wonder where he went to college or what his academic background is like. If I had that job, my goodness— I would be out there reading everything about baseball I could find, and I’d make sure I didn’t make stupid mistakes if it meant proofreading a few times. He’s just a lazy reporter who’s unwilling to try or dig deeper for anything.
When I was younger, I always felt like reporters had the final word and I felt good about taking them at what they said. Now I feel like I will be more qualified for Witrado’s job than he is in like 2 or 3 years.
If I was a manager or editor of that paper, I would fire Witrado for the immaturity he displays even if it’s an informal chat. To put through stupid questions and respond like a spoiled brat… my goodness.

More Witrado deets
You can read some things he wrote for the CSU Fresno newspaper by searching his name here. He also worked for the Fresno Bee, where he sparked at least one lively forum debate over his straight shooting style. In 2000, his mailed-in sports feature story was judged #1 in the NorCal region by the Journalism Association of Community Colleges.

Q: Daniel Lavender, Racine, WI – How did you overcome your lack of any apparent skills to land a prime job like covering the Brewers?
A: Anthony Witrado – Payola.
I know everyone’s having fun with this … but c’mon, how cliched is it for bloggers/commenters on team blogs to hate on their beat writers — even if they do suck? I’m not gonna defend Witrado’s spelling and punctuation, but throwing this kind of question at him in a chat just gives BCB a bad name. It’s too predictable and it goes against the description in the title — “intelligent discussion.” I learn way more about the Brewers, statistically speaking, here than I do in the JS, but I also grew up reading the JS and get plenty of info from the JSblog. BCB would be better off if the “intelligent discussion” came without the angst toward the mainstream.
I credit him for printing Lavender’s question. The answer, like most of his stuff, needed work (I mean, Payola is a bribe for radio-station playlists; Nepotism would have been more appropriate) … but in the end Lavender ends up looking like more of a dick than Witrado does.

given the current jet stream of hate
I’m tending to agree with you.
I don’t read the JS, online or off, and haven’t for a long time. I’ve written about that in the past, and I’m not going to reiterate it now.
But…I don’t know, this is a whole lot of keystrokes dedicated to covering the same ground about something that really doesn’t matter. We should be doing more important things, like figuring out which members of Team Korea to try to lure from the KBO.
I think we should salary dump Hall and sign Bum Ho Lee.

Seriously though, if he doesn’t blow up his arm Yu Darvush is going to make a ridiculous amount of money someday. I spent the time he was pitching half amazed, and half saddened that the Brewers would never even be part of the discussion.
I’d be down with Bum Ho, though.
“if he doesn’t blow up his arm”
Exactly.
I don’t know if my reaction was unfairly shaped by people of my acquaintance talking up Darvish like he was the greatest thing since…well, I suppose Tim Lincecum is the best recent ‘phenom’ comp, but I was and am more impressed by Lincecum.
Also he reminds me of Clay Buchholz and I am /completely/ not sold on him at all. It’s unfair, I know, but….
man
that was really scary. I was about 10 rows back, and it was LOUD. I wasn’t 100% sure at first that it had hit his helmet and not the back of his head. He was on the ground SO fast.

A Brewers-related helmet mishap
Once upon a time Robin Yount knocked the Blue Jay decal off Roy Howell’s helmet while trying to turn a double play. Howell’s reaction: “I guess that was using my head to break up a double play.” Back then the NL let you take your helmet off while running the bases.
Obscure baseball records and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.
I didn't think you'd be stable enough to post after that difficult loss today
I’m generally with you, not worth the effort, but it’s much more appealing than two tests and a 10 page essay right now.
I can understand printing a few stupid questions in the chat, but to print like 5 or 6 just takes away from the content— especially his tirade about skull caps and the correct spelling of gangsta. He seems to just want attention.
I’m pretty sure Lavender was just joking with no intent of having that published.
I have no problem with what the mainstream does overall, and Tom generally does a decent job.
The artist formerly known as jihad.
Even if Lavender is joking, the fact that he event sent it to the guy is not cool.
Either way Witrado still reads it and probably gets his feelings hurt. I don’t think heckling needs to get malicious (unless it involves Ned Yost or Jeff Suppan). When there’s nothing constructive about it — like, say, a request that we all wouldn’t hold it against him if his blogs went up 15 minutes later, if that meant they had five fewer mistakes — it falls into the old cliche of blogs-v-mainstream and only makes the relationship more combative.

Isn’t Tae-kyun Kim a free agent at the end of 2009? I heard talk of that on the broadcast, but those guys aren’t exactly reliable.
Unfortunately, I don’t know how to quantify how many wins above replacement he’d be compared to Prince Fielder. His defense was certainly better, but the sample is small.
As for Yong-kyu Lee, he certainly is gritty but I don’t think it’s a Brewers gritty; it’s more of a Twins gritty. The Twins have this history of collecting short gritty outfielders. And guys who slide into bases head-first.
A question like that, asked by myself via roguejim’s question here, simply doesn’t belong on a nationally syndicated news column, period. Who is really the dick? I find it hard to imagine this is either the first nor last time something like that was asked. He was the one who cherry picked his questions to answer. He chose this one, and much like a time when I properly asked him advice on attaining a job of this nature, in a civilized humble manner, he left my question unanswered.
Questions like my own just don’t belong in a Q and A session, that’s what I’d want to dictate on him more than un-professionalism or grammar skills.
PensBurgh penalty - Lavender - 2 minutes for hijynxing.
now you're blaming
Witrado for responding to the question you asked him?
So let me get this straight. Sending questions to someone you don’t know for the express purpose of making them feel like an idiot for doing their job: COOL. Answering question for the express purpose of making the questioner look like a dick: UNCOOL. Yep, seems fair.
Honestly, I wish I could have the five minutes of my life back that I just wasted reading through all of these comments. KLS, can we take down the “intelligent discussion” caption that runs across the top of this blog now?
The guy is probably fresh out of journalism school and doing his best in the 29th (thanks Kansas City!) biggest baseball market there is. Maybe he’s not very good at it (I honestly don’t pay enough attention) but I just don’t get all of the words and venom spilled here over it (and never really did about Tom H. either frankly). Why is everyone so indignant that someone who devoted their life to a career by paying to go to grad school for it doesn’t want to say openly to anyone who will listen that there are bright, non-journalist school grads out there doing a better job than he is? Of course he isn’t going to say that, just like you wouldn’t get me to admit that some bozo down the street who didn’t go to law school giving legal advice is better at it than I am.
In any event, he’s right. I personally don’t read JS for its profile pieces or its statistical analysis or player evaluation. But I do read it when they have a scoop from Melvin or elsewhere about something because yes—unlike the bloggers here they do have access. That access is meaningless to me in a lot of ways, but not in that one way.
In the meantime I can keep coming here (or at least I used to be able to) to read intelligent analysis that I value.
I’ll bet Lavender’s family and friends are really impressed though.
