Game Thread #-12: Brewers (12-8-3) at Rockies (9-12)
Hopefully the wind has calmed down today as Yovani Gallardo leads the Brewers into Tucson to take on Ubaldo Jimenez and the Rockies.
Gallardo didn't allow a hit in his last outing, and has posted a 3.29 ERA in 13.2 Cactus League innings. All of his runs were allowed in one disastrous start against the Royals: If he hadn't taken the mound that day he'd be riding a 13 inning scoreless streak.
On the other side of the coin, Ubaldo Jimenez is not having a good spring. He's making his fourth appearance and second start, and he's allowed eleven runs on ten hits in 9.2 innings.
If you're hanging out at home today, you can catch today's game on FSN Wisconsin. If you're not near a TV, the game is on Brewers.com, but I'm not sure how that will work. Brian and Rock have been doing the audio for web-only games, but with them doing the TV for today's game there's likely either a simulcast or nine innings of Kent today.
At any rate, Monday's game thread is now open.

It’s Tucson, so most of the regulars are still at home.
Riske, Julio and Stetter are also available to pitch.

TV
Thanks for the TV heads up. Fortunately, I have uVerse so I was able to set the DVR from work so that I can watch the game when I get home.

What is it like?
It’s not available in our area (yet), but I’ll be more than happy to stop paying $200+/month for cable/phone/internet. Anyway, I’m curious as to what you think of it. Do you know how it works?

I love my uVerse. I have the mid grade DSL and the U200 package plus some premium channels for $100/month including tax. I could add phone for $30/month but then I would have to change my home number.
There are some cool features/benefits that I really like.
1. Setting the DVR from anywhere with an internet connection. Direct TV is advertising this like it is new but I have had it with uVerse for the last year and a half.
2. I can watch a DVR’d show from any TV in the house. The DVR is on the big TV in the basement but I can watch a recorded show from the TV in the bedroom
3. No rental fees. With Time Warner, I was paying $6/month to rent the set top boxes and another $0.67/ for each remote. With uVerse I don’t pay any rental fees
4. I can record/watch 4 shows at once. I play channel master on the TV – especially during the baseball season and having that kind of flexibility to record a bunch of stuff at once is cool.
5. Free DVR – yeah I mentioned the DVR above – but forgot to mention that there was no extra charge for the box or the service. Time Warner wanted either $5 or $10 a month for it.
6. Good customer service. I have had ZERO issues with customer service.
The only negative is that they still don’t have the MLB channel… although when I talked to someone last week, they said that they were still in negotiations with MLB
by Saberilliterate on Mar 23, 2009 3:43 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
4 Channel isn't entirely true..
You get 4 streams into your house period. It’s 2 HD streams or 4SD streams at a time. (Or any combination, where the cost of 1HD is 2 streams. So 1 HD and 2 SD). My parents have it with 3 TVs, so when 3 are in use only 1 channel can record with out interrupting a TV to record. It’s great for small or limited numbers of TV in a house.
HD isn’t all that great though, it’s more along the lines of Dish network HD Lite. So it’s not bad for smaller TVs, but anything over 40" or so you see some pixelazation.
I’ve used both, and if I could I’d ditch TWC, they suck balls. But there are some very big limitations in UVerse that will prevent people with large TVs or many TVs from adopting them. There is a new VDSL2 thing coming out which doubles the bandwidth, hopefully UVerse can pump higher def or more channels into the house.

HD
Sorry – I am still stuck in the 90’s and only have SD TV’s in the house.
As the the number of streams – I thought> that I read somewhere that by the summer the 8sd/4hd stream service would be available in my area (Near Mitchell Airport in Milwaukee) but because my wife will not let me buy the Sony 40" XBR 120hz that I so desperately want I didn’t pay any attention to that announcement.
As far as TWC – short of uVerse doubling their price or eliminated FSN, DSC, USA or other key channels – I won’t go back to TWC. The fact that I get more services/channels for less than what I was paying for TWC just makes uVerse sweeter.
Ohh one more cool feature. According to one of their emails, they are supposed to be coming out with an RF STB so that you can have a cleaner look around your home theater – once again – because I still don’t have the Sony XBR – and am still running a 12 year old Pioneer home theater/receiver set up – I didn’t pay attention to dates of release.

Wow
According to the Rock, Chris Duffy is one of the best outfielders in the majors when he’s healthy. And he’s competing for the 4th outfielder job?
I like Duffy, but it’s good to see the Rock is already in mid-season form.
by Marty McSuperFly on Mar 23, 2009 3:08 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Gonna give him the benefit of the doubt and assume he means defensively
Duffy is quite solid defensively. He was a 4-6 outfielder through his times with PIT, which puts him at the same level of Grady Sizemore last year.
Obviously he’s not that kind of a hitter, but I still love what Duffy can potentially bring this team on defense.

Guess the manager
We should win 90 games, without question," [Manager] said this morning. "We have a terrific bullpen. We have one of the best closers in the game. We’ve got the ace in the National League. We’ve got three of the best offensive players at their position. We’ve got, if not the best, then one of the top catchers in baseball.
Hint: It’s not Ken Macha.

I’d call this a list of guys I’d take over Oswalt, and I would take an injury-prone Harden over Oswalt. But maybe not for this list. Let’s throw Peavy and Aaron Harang in, instead.

by Dikembe Meiztombo on Mar 23, 2009 4:16 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Actually, the Yahoo deal has nothing to do with it.
I changed the tagline because “Milwaukee Brewers” was nowhere in the name of the site, and as such we weren’t showing up under search results for the team.
So, admittedly, it’s not as much fun as it used to be, but it’s making sure people looking for Brewer conversation actually get here.

Does Duffy have an option left? In looking at Trot Nixon’s dwindling chances at making the team, McCalvey wrote…
Other outfielders are ticketed for Triple-A over Nixon. Prospects Cole Gillespie and Brendan Katin are likely to play in Nashville and the team is mulling whether to send Lorenzo Cain there. Jason Bourgeois, who is in big league camp, will go to Nashville. If Chris Duffy does not make the cut he would probably be assigned there, too. Ditto for Tony Gwynn Jr. or Brad Nelson, though the Brewers would have to pass that duo through waivers first
So we get to keep Duffy even if he doesn’t make the team? Am I reading that right? Given the paucity of spots left, I’d think that could play a role in TG Jr. somehow making the team.
