You think they're going to lose 162 games?
jeez, man. Try to have some perspective.

Eh
Time for all the bandwagon fans to start making a HUGE deal out of this. I would have put Bush there, but does it really matter what order the rotation is over the course of a season?

No
But it’s not really fun to look forward to this opening day game. Unless you’re a big fan of Tim Lincecum.

Yup
Not a big deal big picture, but I had planned to take off work at 3 and watch the game. Still will, but its not going to be as fun watching Suppan.

Well, no, but
I mean, this just doesn’t make much sense to me. Generally the number one guy gets the most starts, so why not put your best pitcher there?

because he's young?
More rest and fewer starts would be a good thing for a young pitcher. Young pitchers have shown that they tend to hit a wall after so many innings.. see Manny Parra. However, I don’t think that this is the idea here. If it were, Yovani wouldn’t be starting the 2nd game.
I don’t see why Suppan starting 1 game before Yovani will give him a significantly larger number of starts.

Did you just call us all casuals?
I mean, I realize it’s just one game, but it’s also more than that. It’s the one game everyone looks forward to watching, and it’s a PR message for a season to come. If you’re sending out a pitcher that maybe shouldn’t even make the rotation, I think people have a right to be disappointed.

No.
I don’t think anybody has made a big deal out of it. It’s the casuals that will look at it and say, “Macha thinks Suppan is the best pitcher on the team.” I agree that it’s a bad PR move. Hell, I agree it’s a bad move in general, but I don’t think any of us are going to freak out about it or call for his head.

To me, the message it sends the loudest is...
…. “can you believe the pitching staff their handing me? How the hell am I supposed to get this team back to the playoffs with this mess of a rotation? And don’t get me started on the ’pen.”
Not suggesting that’s what Macha intends, just that it’s the reaction I have to the decision.

So, it's like a threat to Melvin
“Get me a decent pitching staff or I’m starting Suppan on Opening Day. And I’m going to keep starting him every game until you trade for Grienke.”

We’ve got Lincecum’s number anyway.

I remember sitting through this game - think it was a Satruday afternoon/nationally televised game.

It could be a fun stat game sort of thing
Take some bets ahead of time:
1. Higher number: Lincecum Ks or Giants hits?
2. Higher number: Brewer errors or Suppan Ks?
3. Lower number: Lincecum ERA or Suppan WHIP?

or maybe it will be a good game
Suppan could pitch well, or well enough to keep it close, and maybe we could grab the lead from their bullpen.

Or Aliens will land during the eighth and play musical chairs with Yovani Gallardo, Rickie Weeks and Casey McGehee.

and monkeys could fly out of my butt
and we could all win the lottery, and maybe Witrado could all of a sudden become a pullitzer worthy writer…
all of these things won’t happen. This is a poor decision for Macha to start off with, especially with Suppan’s wonderful start to the year.
I just sit back and root for the taser

If you're not throwing Gallardo because of some bs about experience, at least put Bush out there or something

But Bush has never started on Opening Day either.
And of course, “has never done it before” means “can’t.”

I, for one, will do a shot for each point of ERA Suppan accumulates.
by HRF on Mar 23, 2009 8:52 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Well, with Rivera set up as Bush's personal catcher...
that would mean Kendall wouldn’t be in the Opening Day squad, and we obviously can’t have that…

Silver lining
He won’t start the first game at Miller Park.
What if he gets hurt and the only guy set up to pitch Opening Day is DiFelice?

Maybe it's Yosty-Crafty
By “throwing” the first game against one of the best pitchers in the NL, it increases the pitching advantage we have in the rest of the series.

If by Yosty-Crafty you mean...
The stats guys showed him how it would work over the season and convinced him to give it a try, but after immediately losing the first series of the season 1-2 to the Giants b/c they faced Lincecum and Cain he immediately scraps the idea stating that “The method obviously doesn’t work in ‘real-life’ baseball, just look at the last series.”

Actually
Yosty-crafty would be to start Suppan Opening Day, and then after a scoreless first inning declare that Suppan is his “first inning guy” for the remainder of the season, after which a reporter will mention it to Bobby Cox, who will chuckle indulgently at his stathead protege.
