Ken Rosenthal predicts Yovani Gallardo Cy Young
Ken Rosenthal predicts Yovani is the man for the NL Cy Young, would be huge if he was. If you look at all the innings the top guys have pitched last year, good case to be made for his candidacy.

Nice
In McCalvy’s blog, he credits “his friends at BCB” for providing him this information.

Predicting Post Season Awards is folly
Would be cool if he won it, but he also picked Dan Haren last year (time on DL) and Erik Bedard (one of the worst trades in recent history). Id be equally happy with 30 starts and an above .500 record for Gallardo. Baby steps for him would be a great upgrade over last year.

Great Upgrade
It would be a great personal upgrade, but it would be a huge downgrade for the team. The time we had with a healthy Sheets and the time we had with Sabathia on the team add up to about 1.5 ace pitchers. If we want to compete, I think we need to have Gallardo do better than just “above .500”

Just because the Mariners overpaid for Bedard
…doesn’t make him a bad pitcher in his own right.
jeff: but i shudder to think of the bullpen analogy to sending the runner

It's true.
Last spring, everyone was expecting big things from Bedard, and no one had any reason to expect he’d be derailed by injury the way he was.
"The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous."

A full season from Gallardo is an upgrade
I think they will hang around this year, with a healthy Gallardo with a little over .500 type year, but I cant see this team wtih much more than 3 or 4 games over .500 at the end of the season. Come August “compete” will be wishful thinking.
