BREAKING FANTASY/MLB NEWS: A-Rod out 10 Weeks

According to his brother, Arod will be out for the next 10 weeks.  This hurts early drafting teams, like Dizikembe, but it raises an interesting fantasy issue.  How much to a team is 15 weeks of A-Rod worth?  Just by simple projections, I'd say about 60 Runs, 20 homers, 60 RBIs, 12 SB with a .290 ave.  This production is about what Edwin Encarnacion will put up (more RBIs and R though) throughout the entire year.  However, this knocks A-Rod's value down to where he's going to be a 2nd or 3rd round steal and produce 4 months of 1st round quality play.

Bill Hall for Melky Cabrera?

some money would have to go with Billy, but that was my first thought…

Also, cheese.

What if

They put 8 players out there and let Jeter play the entire left side.

Sabathia at 3B

(even during games he’s pitching in)

Ryan Braun: He loves it.

Jeter would get really dirty, and the leftfielder would chase down even more ground-ball singles than he does already.

(maybe they need to hold on to Melky, as one of the few remaining mobile OFs they have.)

Also, cheese.

What are you talking about…Jeter’s a gold glover. I’m sure his awesome range would allow him to handle it like a pro.

If he would only ditch that gold glove and play with a leather one like everybody else…

Interesting thought

In my keeper league, I have Sizemore, Johan Santana, Hamilton, Markakis, Phillips, Lackey, and Billingsley. I can only keep 6, and we’re allowed to make pre-draft trades. My league only uses 3 OF, so I’m set there right now assuming the one left out of the list above is Billingsley or Lackey, but since OF is so deep I was trying to trade one of them for A-Rod.

I think I could get him for Hamilton and Lackey, especially now that A-Rod will be out. Although it’s a lot of value for A-Rod, one of Lackey/Billingsley has zero value to me unless I trade them, because I can only keep one anyways. In addition, I play in a H2H league, so I really need the production down the stretch, which A-Rod would provide. Plus, I’d be able to keep A-Rod next year, assuming he doesn’t fall off a cliff.

Ultimately, I feel that having my OF set while not having a 3B/SS/1B/C going into the draft is a disadvantage, and I feel I can find a productive OF later than a productive 3B. By trading A-Rod, I’d give myself a more balanced team Pre-Draft. Essentially it’d be Johan, Sizemore, Phillips, Markakis, Billingsley, and injured A-Rod vs Johan, Sizemore, Phillips, Markakis, Hamilton, Billingsley/Lackey. Thoughts?

by marty22 on Mar 5, 2009 2:41 PM CST reply actions

I'd hold on to Hamilton

but seing if I can get a deal done for A-rod would be to your advantage. Lackey and Hamilton may be overpaying for him, so see what can be done.

I just sit back and root for the taser

by Hyatt on Mar 5, 2009 2:49 PM CST up reply actions

isn’t it basically hamilton for A-Rod straight up because if I keep Billingsley, I lose Lackey for nothing anyways?

by marty22 on Mar 5, 2009 2:59 PM CST up reply actions

unless of course

i could use lackey in another trade, but I don’t anticipate that.

by marty22 on Mar 5, 2009 2:59 PM CST up reply actions

haha

nevermind…someone just traded Howard and Mauer for A-Rod

by marty22 on Mar 5, 2009 3:00 PM CST up reply actions

Wow

talk about giving up way too much. Geez… that is a deal I would almost throw out a veto for.

by Hyatt on Mar 5, 2009 3:51 PM CST up reply actions

what about this, Hyatt?

thanks for helping, by the way.

What about trading Hamilton for Kinsler, and then Phillips for Aramis Ramirez and a 9/10th round draft pick? I know you’re a Phillips fan, and I am too, but I don’t trust his average, and in my league we count OPS, so his lack of OBP skills really hurt here. Thoughts?

by marty22 on Mar 6, 2009 4:02 PM CST up reply actions

I think you're losing too much

Yes, Kinsler overall is an upgrade over phillips, but when’s the last time Ramirez hit 40? or even 30? If you are looking to upgrade power, look to 1B.

Getting Kinsler for Hamilton is definitely something I’d do. But I’d say something else for Phillips. See if you can swing something 2 for 1. Like Phillips and Lackey for a top flight 1B

I just sit back and root for the taser

by Hyatt on Mar 6, 2009 5:27 PM CST up reply actions

thanks again

i’ll look at it…it’s not really that I’m looking to upgrade power, the A-Ram move would be to re-gain what I lose by trading Hamilton. Also, there are very few 3B left after the keepers have been selected, while there are some 1B. That was the idea behind getting A-Ram. I do like phillips, but if I have kinsler, then it doesn’t make much sense to carry two 2B, and his OPS is about 70-80 points below the mark I’m aiming for, based on last year’s results.

by marty22 on Mar 6, 2009 6:26 PM CST up reply actions

i forgot to say

I think phillips is overvalued in my league, because of the inclusion of OPS, which people don’t really account for. most people just look at standard 5×5 rankings…

Suddenly Selig?

I am not surprised. Call me a conspiracy theorist, but the sudden nature of this post-apocalyptic press event injury smells like a compromise between one A-Selig and A-Rod.

by One-Flap Down on Mar 5, 2009 2:59 PM CST reply actions

huh

A-Rod needs surgery.

Wouldn’t it be nice if there was like this magical creme or injection he could get to speed up the recovery process. Maybe he should look into that.

He certainly is worth no more than a 5th-6th rounder at best… But some fools will take him 1st or 2nd round… That fool will NOT be me.
