Game Thread -27: Cubs (5-6) at Brewers (4-3-1)

We're only narrowly hanging on to first place among NL Central teams playing in the Cactus League, so I don't think I need to tell you just how important today's game is.  Yes, Mike DiFelice is playing for Team Italy, but sometimes you just have to grit your teeth and play through the pain.

Cap'n McCalvy has the lineup:

Rickie Weeks - 2B
Chris Duffy - LF
J.J. Hardy - SS
Prince Fielder - 1B
Corey Hart - RF
Mike Cameron - CF
Mike Lamb - 3B
Jason Kendall - C
Jeff Suppan - RHP

The other scheduled pitchers are Villanueva, Swindle, Narveson, and Wright.  Some people with bears on their shirts will play for the other team.

Adam also reports that Todd Coffey's wife has given birth.  I would make a joke, but it would be too obvious, and too lame.

Game time is 2:05 CT.

As oconnobe points out in a fanshot

today’s game is on WGN. I hope I can stay long enough to watch Swindle pitch.

I think we are playing in the Cactus league Jeff

Anyway good to see that the Netherlands might upset the Dominican Rep. They lead 3-2 going into the 9th.

Also, cheese.

I have seen the thread

Hate to see what the 5th pitcher options were only 4 years ago, makes Suppan look not that bad ( If he was not getting paid about 10 times what he is worth)
Anyway the Netherlands held on to win 3-2 with 3 infield hits!!
Means the Dominican need to win the next two games or they will be eliminated.

Why in the world

is Brauny batting 7th in the WBC?

You would think he could hit 5th behind Wright instead of Youkilis

But the US seem to have 4 guys you would want to hit 3rd. I guess Braun is the youngest and therefore was the one to get demoted the most.

Chipper

I realize Chipper’s a switch hitter, but batting him 3rd seems a little high

Trying not to have too many righties in a row I suppose.

Dunn,McCann or Victorino were the other options.
Anyway 1-0 to the good guys after 1inn.

by Saltire on Mar 7, 2009 1:31 PM CST reply actions

I'd almost rather have Victorino I think

or even consider starting Rollins at SS, he’s a switch hitter too i believe

What and drop Captain Jeter!

Are you crazy? Drop the great fielding SS of the Yankees, you are out of your mind.

Japan's winning this thing again

aren’t they?

They treat it more seriously than the rest.

So quite possibly. but in one-off games anyone can beat anyone

Suppan and Narveson

looked pretty decent today. Big sweeping left-handed curve from Narveson to strike out Soriano looking!

Love WGN's audio

Great exchange between Macha and the Ump on Duffy’s checked swing. Its good to know that Macha “gives a shit” about spring training games.

Anyone else catch it?

by Supertramp on Mar 7, 2009 3:42 PM CST reply actions

that was a bad call

though I was hoping that Macha would be tossed during a spring game.

I thought

we might see a black belt move right there.

I must say

I’m sorry I missed the game yesterday, but I’m astonished to see no one flew the L flag when it was over.
