Game Thread #-4: Diamondbacks (11-19) at Brewers (18-10-3)
In the Brewers' penultimate Cactus League game, they will try to hold onto their half game lead for the NL's best spring record.
Today in Maryvale it's Dave Bush hosting Dan Haren. Bush is having easily the best spring of any Brewer starting pitcher, having posted a 2.70 ERA in seven appearances (six starts), and allowing just 23 hits and four walks in 26.2 innings. This will be his last start of the spring: he'll pitch an inning on Opening Day to stay sharp for his first regular season start a week from Saturday.
Dan Haren will make his eighth start today, and he's pitched eight more spring innings (25.2) than any other Diamondback. He comes in carrying a 4.56 ERA but has struck out 29 batters in 25.2 innings.
Via Adam McCalvy, here's today's lineup:
Rickie Weeks 2B
Brad Nelson LF
J.J. Hardy SS
Prince Fielder 1B
Corey Hart RF
Mike Cameron CF
Bill Hall 3B
Jason Kendall C
Dave Bush RHP
If you're within broadcast range of Milwaukee, you can catch today's game on WMLW. If you're not in range of WMLW but have MLB.TV, you can catch it there too. If neither of those are an option, Kent Sommerfeld will have the call on Brewers.com, and even if you can't do that, you can follow the game via Gameday at this link.
Wednesday's Game Thread is now open.

Braun necessary for JJ / Hart switch?
Swapping Hart to the #2 spot in the order is only in play when Braun can hit third?
That's interesting.
I just noticed that the LF/SS spots are swapped today. Brad Nelson in the 2 hole is a curious choice at best.

Potential answers to your cliffhanger
1. Brad Nelson has speed to burn.
2. Estrada is no longer available
3. Escobar keeps tripping over his hose.

He's revealing his secret weapon too early
Apparently Brad Nelson is a crafty on the base paths. Dude can burn when he needs to!
Here's something else to discuss, if you're so inclined:
I’ve got a long overnight road trip this weekend, and I’m thinking of downloading some books on tape to keep me from falling asleep in the car. Anyone read a good baseball book lately? Preferably something that will take longer than 14 hours to listen to on tape?
"The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous."
I’m sure you’ve already read Moneyball, so how about Blindside by the same author. Its actually a football book, but a pretty good one. The only other book I can think of off the top of my head is LaRussa’s book (3 nights in August?) I checked it out from the library but did not listen to it.
For even mentioning that you should be banished to…the Island of Misfit Toys, or Utah!

The Josh Hamilton story is OK
It started out kind of boring (and lame. Basically, Hamilton uses the first part of the book to explain how much potential he had, thus making him come off as very cocky. Once the drug use begins, the book gets really interesting and inspirational.
Someone just recommeded one to be yesterday
But for the life of me I can’t remember what it was.

Any particular area of baseball you have in mind?
Maybe you’ve read it already, but the last baseball book I read was The Glory of Their Times, which is pretty fantastic.

Oh yeah, and though I’ve only read the book, I think you can get an audio version with the original recordings of the interviews included, which is supposedly quite good.

How about Pride and Prejudice and Zombies
here is the description:
Pride and Prejudice and Zombies features the original text of Jane Austen’s beloved novel with all-new scenes of bone-crunching zombie action. As our story opens a mysterious plague has fallen upon the quiet English village of Meryton and the dead are returning to life! Feisty heroine Elizabeth Bennet is determined to wipe out the zombie menace but she’s soon distracted by the arrival of the haughty and arrogant Mr. Darcy. What ensues is a delightful comedy of manners with plenty of civilized sparring between the two young lovers and even more violent sparring on the blood-soaked battlefield as Elizabeth wages war against hordes of flesh-eating undead. Complete with 20 illustrations in the style of C. E. Brock (the original illustrator of Pride and Prejudice) this insanely funny expanded edition will introduce Jane Austen’s classic novel to new legions of fans

Wow
The online broadcast sounds terrible today.
"The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous."
Pretty sure Kent just said Bob Brenly is the manager of the D-Backs.

The game is also on FS Wisconsin
At least in Madison.

Weird
I’m on 26 here in Madison (normally FSN) and the game is on, although I’m pretty sure it’s just the WMLW feed being played on the FSN channel.

I feel pretty stupid now
I didn’t realize it was on WMLW. I’ve been watching tennis (even though it says baseball on the channel guide) and listening to Kent Sommerfeld for the last 23 minutes. I should really read the whole post.

Ok, I am admittedly a wrestling fan
But I still have no clue why Kent has The Honky Tonk Man in the booth.
"The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous."
I saw him wrestle last summer in Duluth.
The nice thing about so many of the WWF stars from the late 80’s and early 90’s is that they did so little actual work then that they can still put on the same kind of match now, in their late 50’s and early 60’s.
Which is good, because they blew all their 80’s/90’s income on cocaine, so they need the work.
"The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous."
Their work was a little less...physically demanding, let's say
At least, compared to their present-day counterparts.
"The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous."
OK
although they were pretty huge. That much weight lifting generally prevents the body from doing physically demanding tasks as it gets older.
I don't think the Honky Tonk Man was lifting many weights.
Except, of course, for the ones that only weighed 12 oz and had beer inside.
"The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous."
Because Kent 3:16 routine 5 to 4 to 3 just said so!
PensBurgh penalty - Lavender - 2 minutes for hijynxing.
Bush not especially effective today
He’s got good movement on his breaking stuff, but hasn’t been getting any results from it. I don’t like seeing fastballs right down the middle.
ouch
Corey Hart misjudging a fly to right. One of these years, he should work on that.

ugh
Looper last night, and then Bush today. Might as well run Suppan out there tomorrow, so I can be completely depressed.

Weeks not quite at midseason form yet
All of his pop-ups are going up and back instead of up and over the infield.

For someone who watches more TV than me:
Have the Brewers won a TV game yet this spring?
"The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous."
Correct me if I’m wrong, but I thought we beat the Cubs on a WGN game this spring.

Ah, that's right.
I was away that day.

I was there at the park
But it was quite boring, 2-0 as I recall, but got to talk to Macha after about absolutely nothing

Sounds like Daron has been buying into some better stats
Giving Grace a hard time in the booth, rattling off WHIP, BABIP, Win Shares. He’s kind of a doofus, but I’d be happy to have him back if he brought discussion of WHIP and FIP with him.

Anyone have a Sports Illustrated subscription?
They have a nice article about using stats to evaluate defense in their baseball preview, out today.

They still put out a sports magazine?

I'm not the one that has the subscription, and I rarely get time to read their weekly issue
but I flipped through the baseball issue and saw the letters “UZR”, and my interest was piqued.

That was a really good time to turn the game on
Steffan Wilson is cool, too.
jeff: but i shudder to think of the bullpen analogy to sending the runner
Who is Steffan Wilson?
And why in last week of spring do these games end up so many players from A ball rather than AAA or bench players?
Corners guy with limited tools
But he has some power and was extremely nice when I interviewed him last year. He went to Harvard.
jeff: but i shudder to think of the bullpen analogy to sending the runner
As for why there's A ball guys with the team
The AAA guys are playing every day and getting more ABs in minor league camp. These guys are more expendable to spend all day sitting around to get one AB and a few innings in the field.
"The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous."
"Are you okay?"
“Yeah, I’m just gonna watch the hitter now.”

Lined it off the pitcher's glove for an infield single
jeff: but i shudder to think of the bullpen analogy to sending the runner
He hit one right at the pitcher, who missed it somehow and it ended up as an infield single.
"The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous."
I expected Counsell to hit into the double play and end the inning.
He did his best.
"The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous."

Given our starting pitcher…

Now we find out who's been working hard in minor league camp.
There’s an extra inning today, since Bush was supposed to go 7, so it’ll go to whoever got invited to hang out today.
"The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous."
