Game Thread #-4: Diamondbacks (11-19) at Brewers (18-10-3)

In the Brewers' penultimate Cactus League game, they will try to hold onto their half game lead for the NL's best spring record.

Today in Maryvale it's Dave Bush hosting Dan Haren. Bush is having easily the best spring of any Brewer starting pitcher, having posted a 2.70 ERA in seven appearances (six starts), and allowing just 23 hits and four walks in 26.2 innings. This will be his last start of the spring: he'll pitch an inning on Opening Day to stay sharp for his first regular season start a week from Saturday.

Dan Haren will make his eighth start today, and he's pitched eight more spring innings (25.2) than any other Diamondback. He comes in carrying a 4.56 ERA but has struck out 29 batters in 25.2 innings.

Via Adam McCalvy, here's today's lineup:

Rickie Weeks  2B
Brad Nelson  LF
J.J. Hardy  SS
Prince Fielder  1B
Corey Hart  RF
Mike Cameron  CF
Bill Hall  3B
Jason Kendall  C
Dave Bush  RHP

If you're within broadcast range of Milwaukee, you can catch today's game on WMLW. If you're not in range of WMLW but have MLB.TV, you can catch it there too. If neither of those are an option, Kent Sommerfeld will have the call on Brewers.com, and even if you can't do that, you can follow the game via Gameday at this link.

Wednesday's Game Thread is now open.

Braun necessary for JJ / Hart switch?

Swapping Hart to the #2 spot in the order is only in play when Braun can hit third?

That's interesting.

I just noticed that the LF/SS spots are swapped today. Brad Nelson in the 2 hole is a curious choice at best.

You need speed at the top of the order, so he put Brad Nelson there because

by warwick5s on Apr 1, 2009 2:16 PM CDT up reply actions

Potential answers to your cliffhanger

1. Brad Nelson has speed to burn.
2. Estrada is no longer available
3. Escobar keeps tripping over his hose.

Here's something else to discuss, if you're so inclined:

I’ve got a long overnight road trip this weekend, and I’m thinking of downloading some books on tape to keep me from falling asleep in the car. Anyone read a good baseball book lately? Preferably something that will take longer than 14 hours to listen to on tape?

I’m sure you’ve already read Moneyball, so how about Blindside by the same author. Its actually a football book, but a pretty good one. The only other book I can think of off the top of my head is LaRussa’s book (3 nights in August?) I checked it out from the library but did not listen to it.

Or if it does not have to be about baseball, you could try the Song of Ice and Fire series. It would certainly be long enough.

The Josh Hamilton story is OK

It started out kind of boring (and lame. Basically, Hamilton uses the first part of the book to explain how much potential he had, thus making him come off as very cocky. Once the drug use begins, the book gets really interesting and inspirational.

Any particular area of baseball you have in mind?

Maybe you’ve read it already, but the last baseball book I read was The Glory of Their Times, which is pretty fantastic.

How about Pride and Prejudice and Zombies

here is the description:

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies features the original text of Jane Austen’s beloved novel with all-new scenes of bone-crunching zombie action. As our story opens a mysterious plague has fallen upon the quiet English village of Meryton and the dead are returning to life! Feisty heroine Elizabeth Bennet is determined to wipe out the zombie menace but she’s soon distracted by the arrival of the haughty and arrogant Mr. Darcy. What ensues is a delightful comedy of manners with plenty of civilized sparring between the two young lovers and even more violent sparring on the blood-soaked battlefield as Elizabeth wages war against hordes of flesh-eating undead. Complete with 20 illustrations in the style of C. E. Brock (the original illustrator of Pride and Prejudice) this insanely funny expanded edition will introduce Jane Austen’s classic novel to new legions of fans

I saw him wrestle last summer in Duluth.

The nice thing about so many of the WWF stars from the late 80’s and early 90’s is that they did so little actual work then that they can still put on the same kind of match now, in their late 50’s and early 60’s.

Which is good, because they blew all their 80’s/90’s income on cocaine, so they need the work.
