As long as we're looking for a LH bat and a backup 3B...
Dallas McPherson is now available. Before you drool too much over his '07 numbers in AAA, note that Albuquerque is a hitter's paradise; still, he was one a top prospect and obviously has huge power. He could be a mini-Branyan.

McPherson vs. McGehee
McPherson PECOTA: .207/.297.421
McGehee PECOTA: .228/.288/.334
McPherson CHONE: .203/.301/.409
McGehee CHONE: .252/.312/.369
McPherson ZiPS: .217/.295/.432
McGehee ZiPS: .257/.300/.378
I don’t know much about McPherson’s defense. Wow, PECOTA really hates McGehee.

Great work battlekow. Here’s his BR page, his defense doesn’t seem to bad to me. They’ve certainly improved over the years, check his minor league fielding percentage improvement.
I’d be all for adding Dallas McPherson though. His HR total in AAA last season would alone be worth the look for me, while we crave a mini-Branyan that is.
PensBurgh penalty - Lavender - 2 minutes for hijynxing.
McGehee on PECOTA
His minors stats are pretty unimpressive, I know, but…wow. It’s pretty ominous that none of them see even a .700 OPS.
"I will agree that the attitude [at BCB] is ridiculous and they have done so much to instigate animosity and then block us from responding. Real mature!"
Yes please
Totalzone says he’s about average on defense. Almost certainly better than McGehee overall, though with less versatility. McGehee has a career minors OBP of like .330, I can see why projections wouldn’t take too kindly to him.

McPherson
Doesn’t he have chronic back problems that make him just about useless in the field?

Hmm, I guess they were gone in 2008
I don’t know why the team would be looking for a LH bat and backup 3B, though. They’ve got Gamel in case the guys on the major league roster don’t pan out and if he doesn’t stick there, they won’t worry about it until after the season anyway.

Gamel wouldn't be called up to back up third
He’d only be called up—and then only maybe—if Hall went down and he could play almost every day. We don’t need a backup third baseman, but if there’s one available better than McGehee, it’s at least worth talking about upgrading.

He did have back issues
Starting in 2005 when he was handed the Angels’ starting 3B job. (They thought highly enough of him before then to give up Troy Glaus — though there were definite $$ considerations.) He spent a good deal of time on the DL, tried rehabbing it, etc., and made some brief appearances in 2006. He showed some flashes of his promise (mainly as a LH masher), but wound up needing to have back surgery. The Angels released him last spring, and the Marlins picked him up. Supposedly the back is all better.
